Subject: pppd LCP error
Date: 23 Jun 1999 05:30:53 GMT

Hi,

I am a relatively new user of linux so please excuse me if I sound a bit
lost.
I am having this problem with a Novell box dialing into a slackware linux
box running Kernel 2.0.33. The problem is that I can not get the servers
to agree on what seems to be one section of the LCP negotiations. I have
include a section of log where the errors are occurring.

You will notice that the common cause of the error is the HEX code of < 17
04 00 fb>
Would anyone have any ideas on what this problem could be or any ideas on
where to start looking? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[This answer is courtesy of an expert from QuestionExchange]

There is a point by point overview of the what's implemented
and what's missing in the kernel source. The file you
should look at is net/ipv4/tcp.c in the kernel source tree.
You do NOT need to read the C source. Just scroll down
until you hit the comments about RFC's.

Hope this helps

If it's an external drive, I've heard of SCSI sharing switches.
Don't know the details.

If it's not external, make it one.

I'm curious, I'm running RH5.2 and will be updating some to RH6.0
soon. I've been using Linksys since the first 10/100's came out,
I've got DEC's, PNIC's and Linksys's, They all work fine with the
stock RH5.2 tulip (tulip.c:v0.89H). Any specifics on the
RH6.0/tulip issue?? Point me in a direction.

I've got them running in everything, Win(NT,95,98), Novell 3 and
4, RH5.2 without a hitch, I hate the thought of having to use
something different for RH6.0.

One of the LinkSys marked chips that requires a ROM update for a
redetection problem with Win98. Is this the problem child? ROM
upgrade ROMUP.EXE (for LINKSYS chip (168 version))

I've tried to consistently refer to ttyS3 in my scripts not /dev/modem.
But it still won't work.

But I think you are right in suggesting that it is something to do with
LOCK files...although I can't find any on my system. I assuem they are
created and deleted "on the fly" as they are needed?

Thanks for your help. The problem is there are so many conflicting docs
for something like this that a newbie like me easily gets confused.

to change the name: 'netbios name = linux'
you will also need the 'interfaces = ' line, section 3 on my web-page may be useful.

You have it backwards. eth0 should be the cable nic eth1 internal
network otherwise the routing will be all messed up especially with ip
forwarding enabled.

Slackware 4.0 is one of the best distributions as is. It's your setup
that's messed up. Run netconfig again and make sure you add entries to
/etc/rc.inet1 for eth1. The gateway should be the same as provided by
your ISP. Don't forget to edit /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/hosts. Make
sure your cabling is right too. The cable modem goes in eth0 and eth1 is
part of the internal networks hub or lead terminiator on a coax setup.
Use 192.168.0.1 and up for the internal network. Your static ip from the
ISP is for eth0.

Did you try to go through available cards and see if any of them would
"autoprobe" yours? That's how I got mine to work (I have syslink etherfast
card). If none of the options do not work for you, change the card... :-)

>>If you call pppd, then it should create a lockfile called

                    LCK...ttyS3<<

I can't see any LCK files on my system. Are they automatically deleted
after use?

I have tried to use ttyS3 consistently :

in my inittab file..
in my ifcfg-ppp0 file

(I think thats the only 2 places it crops up)

I have also changed /dev/modem to point to /dev/ttyS3 just in case

ppp/options has a "lock" entry
do I need a an options.ttyS3 file?!

Thanks for your help.

I'm a slightly experienced newbie :) so I hope this isn't a dumb
question...

I have 2 machines, a Linux box which is my gateway/firewall/web server, etc
and a windows box which is internal (ip address of 192.168.100.2). My
problem is that when I try to block anything (via dotfile ipfwadm), the
windows box can't communicate with the Linux box or the outside world.

Details:
The Linux box has two ethernet cards, one on the internet with a valid IP
address, and one internal with a private address. This machine is
running a Web server (Apache), kernel 2.0.34 with masq and ipfw.

I set up the firewall initially to send everything through, no blocking.
The Windows box could talk to my web server and the outside world, no
problem. Then I started to implement the CERT checklist to tighten
security before my web site went public. They suggest that you filter out
various services unless you need them (I have no idea what most of these
services are, so how do I know if I need them? Are there docs somewhere
about this?). I figured the right place to do this was in the section
"global deny" in the dotfile generator (I left the default policy as
allow). After entering various services (both incoming and outbound, was
that a bad thing to do?), the windows box couldn't access the web server
or the outside world. A couple of things I'm wondering:

1) How would configuring the firewall prevent the internal network from
working properly?
2) How do I know which services I need? I should really be defaulting to
deny and allowing only what's necesary, right?
3) Does web access require anything other than port 80?
4) What am I doing wriong??? :)

Thanks for any help you can give me. It seems like nobody has had this
problem..
