All,

I have a "generic" Encore ESL-816-TB ISA NIC that for some odd reason
refuses to be recognized on startup. I need to use it to reach the
modem on my PowerMac(which I'm using right now) since I made a stupid
decision awhile back and put a winmodem in place of my old isa 28.8 card
: ( {gave the 28.8 to a relative..jeez} I've tried ifconfig, linuxconf,
netcfg...etc... Is there anything I can try short of recompiling the
kernel to get this to work...(I'll settle for straight ne2000 compatible
use...nothing fancy needed.)

Thanks in Advance,

Ron

Folks,

We are looking for somekind of domain authentication for
Linux, somewhat analogous to what an NT PDC does. We want a
Linux server to process workstation login scripts to
automatically authenticate users and mount the appropriate
file systems for that user.

For any given login event, file systems may have to be
mounted based on at least 2 criteria:

1. machine ID
2. User ID

Any ideas? We really want to migrate from Novell and NT to
Linux, but we must keep this functionality.

termpkg-3.0.tar.gz

..and let me know how you got it working :)

Have a look at termpkg-3.0. Maybe we can help each other make some
sense of it :). I have a similar situation where I would like to
connect a number of PLCs via serial line to a Linux box, install
termpkg and allow applications like TCPWedge to grab data from
these connections, and pull them into a spreadsheet, or write a
file directly to disk. (whatever does the job)

I need to set this up so that the connection is always open. The
PLCs are constantly dumping delimited text. they're each connected
to it's own jug, bottle, or drum filler (beverage concetrate
manufacturing)

I am already doing this with a couple of old Lantronix terminal
servers, but we (they) recently found out that the terminal servers
are not Y2K compliant (feh! it's just encapsulated data streams,
give me a break) and we have to retire them.

I do know that:

The way this would work once it's connected is that each serial line
would get it's own socket under the terminal server's IP address.
TCPWedge would then go in and get what data it needs and hand it off
MS-Excel, or dump it right to a file.

Subject: *Some* web sites inaccessible through ipchains?
Date: Sat, 18 Sep 1999 16:28:53 -0400

Greetings,

I have installed RH6.0 and ipchains. I have a dialup connection to connect
to my local ISP, and I use my Linux server as a gateway. ipchains is set up
using the "three line setup" from the howto.

Many sites are accessible from my Win98 client machine on my side of the
server, but some are not. The browser says "connection reset". When I try
to connect from a browser on the server, they work fine (presumably not
going through ipchains). This is a very consistent problem -- here's a
short list of problematic sites:

www.onsale.com
www.firstusa.com
netbenefits.401k.com
www.4cds.com

What kinds of things can I do to troubleshoot this problem? I am able to
ping these sites successfully, but when I traceroute them I usually get
"Request timed out" towards the end of the route.

Again, this is a problem on some sites, but not others. Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Folks,

The project is to migrate a departmental file server from a
Novell box to a Linux box. We have a database record of all
the Novell users. We want to be able to output a file in a
format that a script will use to create a passwd file to
place all the user accounts on the Linux box. We have a guy
who says he can output the file from the database just about
however we want it, so the script is what we are looking
for. We want to run the script, giving it this file as
input, and get a passwd file out. Could be a shell script,
or I could see it bing a PERL script. Anyone have one, or
know where we could get one.

Adding

#include <sys/sysmacros.h>

to the end of the sys header list in pppd/sys-linux.c should make the
problem go away.

You can also get ppp-2.3.10 which came out Friday and doesn't have this
this little problem.

I'm suprised to hear that your ISP isn't supporting PPPoE on Linux yet,
because they (Sympatico) apparently are in Ontario. However, maybe they are
just doing so "unofficially" as I don't think they officially support Linux
at all.

In any case, check out the news group sympatico.highspeed . There are also
some PPPoE FAQ pages. Here is one specifically for Linux:

http://sidhe.folkwolf.net/~chris/pppoe-howto

This one talks about kernel support for PPPoE in Linux, but it's still
strictly a development project from what I've seen:

    http://www.ipsec.org/email/pppoe/0114.html

There is more general information about PPPoE, especially at Sympatico, on
Bob Carrick's PPPoE page at
    http://www3.sympatico.ca/bcarrick/pppoefaq.htm

Hope this helps!

You have not looked into UNIX that much. Logging into ANY box that has
home directories NFS mounted (automount) brings that person into his/her
home directory only.

Set other NFS mounted directories for group read/write and put the
appropriate people into the groups they're allowed to write to.

This way you only have one server that has the files. It shares the
files via NFS, every system mounts that directory and only the people
who have the right to write to it can. Single box to upgrade, not each
desktop.

I would appreciate any help anyone can offer with this problem.

I recently decided to network my home. I bought a few Netgear ISA NICs
and one of their hubs. For the server, I got NWE. I'm using Slackware
3.6 with the 2.0.35 kernel and I load most everything, IPX included, as
modules. This seems to work fine, the card module is 'ne.o', eth0
appears to initialize properly. Make does not complain and I've
checked the files '/etc/nwserv.conf' and 'config.h' to see if any
changes seemed necessary and none seemed so, but then, I really don't
know what I'm doing. I set as much for automatic decection/modification
as possible. Make 'install' also goes fine. However, when I try to
start the server, I get a number of 'PANIC' messages. The first, and
most puzzing to me is 'SIGSEGV at pid xxx' . I was under the,
obviously mistaken impression that this signal would only occurr during
compilation. This is followed by :

          'NWSERV 0:PANIC'
           'NWSERV 0:CHILD died:Invalid argument'
           'Child=NWBIND,  result=-99'

and the server shuts down. Any ideas?

The easy way is to just buy them; most computer stores carry them now.

If you want to make your own, though, it should simply be a swap of transmit
and receive wires, that is, T+ with R+ and T- with R- . That translates to
wiring pin 1 to pin 3 (T+ to R+) and pin 2 to pin 6 (T- to R-). Worked for
me!

OK. Lets put it this way. Modprobe shall, according to the man page, handle
loadable modules automatically. The loopback and eth0 is NOTcompiled as modules,
and can never be found as they not are modules. They are allready forged into the
kernel. And as they are allready in the kernel they don't have to be automatically
loaded.

Both the loopback and eth0 works perfectly well. It just 100 extra lines into
/var/log/messages every reboot, that's all.

The question is, why tries the kernel to handle loadable modules that doesnt exist
automatically.

It is no serious problem. The boot is delayed one second or so, and the logs get a
couple of kilobytes bigger than necessary, that's all.

I have very big dificulties with my 3c 905B.
It shows up on the hub ass 100Mbit and vortex-diag -a shows:

Transceiver type in use: 100baseTX.
 MAC settings: half-duplex.

...
And i only get 12 Kb/s from and to a machine with a Intel EE Pro 100 card.
I get good speeds to all the 10mbit clients. Even with a crossover cable
i get only 12 kb/s between them... If anyone have a solution to this i
would be glad =)

Nope. And it's probably overkill to do the whole desktop over a WAN
link. He just wants to run a single app. When I want to run an app
remote (this xemacs session is being run remotely this way) do:
ssh -f -X hostname program
Works well. Plus you get the added bonus of encryption and
authentication.

You need a crossover cable to connect the two. If you have BNC type
connectors you can use a single cable and terminators on each end.
Then read the NET-3 HOWTO to set up a network between the two.

this depends on what the clients are. For Linux clients, you need to set up
NIS and NFS.

NIS takes care of authentication. All login names & passwords are stored on
the NIS machine (a la NT PDC or whatever the Novell equivalent is).
NFS is for mounting remote file systems.
You'll probably want both services to run on the same box.
The info is available at www.linux.org/help

If the clients are win95 or (insert another windoze) clients, you need to
set up samba. Samba runs on just about any Unix, and makes the box look like
an NT box (as far as windows clients can tell).

I just upgraded from RH5 to RH6 and have gone through translating all my

Except for one thing.

The dhcpcd daemon isn't running it's completion script. I tried putting

My dhcpcd-eth1.info file is getting updated, so it looks like I'm

Any ideas? Worst comes to worst I'll throw it into the crontab, I

I am trying to configuer SuSE 6.2 to connect to GTE WorldWind and am
getting nowhere.GTE does not support Linux so I quess I am on my own.
Accordint to the documentatio that I can find both in print and on the
Internet there is suppose to be a URL for a guy who works at GTE

http//:www.psilord.com

however there is nothing on that page except some graphics. There are
no links, hypertext or anything that even resembles a file.
Does any one out here run WorldWind using Linux? If so any pointers as
to how you set it up would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx Dave

RH6 uses pump rather that dhcpcd -- pump does not support completion
scripts...
