Hi,

Does any one know about the cause of collision of network card? I can
see a number of collision when issuing 'ifconfig'.
I suspect that it is the cause of why I telnet to it very slowly.

6/22/99

To whom it may concern:

I am having problems configuring my Apache-US-SSL-1.3.3-1 server that
came with my Redhad 5.2 box, running on
an intel platform (pentium pro 150, 125M Ram,two hardrives (hda and hdb
with lots of partitions), matrox millenium II, NE2000 ethernet card,
etc.

The problem:

when the apache server calls a perl script I am able to successfully
call
shell scripts from within the perl script, eg:
$returnme = [back tick]/home/user/bin/shellscript[back tick];
works fine.

But when I try to call a binary compiled in C I get nothing, eg:
$returnme = [back tick]/home/user/bin/cprogram[back tick];
fails.

Please help.

I've always played Quake 3 Test in windows and got a ping around
165-195. When I played it in linux I got a ping around 300-350!! I am
using a Diamond
SupraExpress 56e (external). What position does the mtu & mru values in
the /etc/ppp/options file do? I believe they were both set at 550 or
something like that. If I increase/decrease them will that speed it up
at all? And is there any other way to speed it up?

I had this problem too - although 16MB was as far as I could see. I was
advised to investigate the "cruft" mount option for the iso9660
filesystem, but didn't get around to it as my box is dual-boot, and I
used Win95 to pull it off the CD.

If you'cve got your ISDN connection working, what you need now is
ip-masquerading and firewall. Look up ipcahins.

We have a Linux network in our office. It currently has 11 workstations and
2 servers. We are connected to the Internet via a Cisco 1650 router (T1).
>From the router we branch to 2 netgear 10/100 hubs. Most workstations have
EtherExpress Pro 100+ cards in them, and the longest distance of cat 5 is 25
feet.

We have begun to notice that network throughput is having sustained drops to
less than 4 Mbs. Are the hubs getting overloaded? Is it time for switches?

Please e-mail me off list....

Hi,
I was about to give up using my Linux box to go out on the internet
until I install the 'old' RedHat 5.2 (Kernel 2.0.36). Now everything
works fine with the internet. But it won't work on the new RedHat 6.0
(same with SuSE 6.1). Netscape keeps saying '...stalled.' and nothing
more happens.

I'am behind my companys proxy server. It seems like some is changed
in the 2.2.x kernel so that it generates IP messages that our proxy
doesn't
like (??). Inside our intranet everythings works fine though. I have the
same
problem on both RedHat 6.0 (Kernel 2.2.5) and SuSE 6.1 (Kernel 2.2.5).

Could it be that messages looks different on 2.2.x? Some strange
splitting
of messages? Everybody at my company using Linux has the same problem
so I guess it not related to any specific hardware.

I know that there is something new with firewalling in 2.2.x called
'ipchains' but I am not using the firewalling functions, everything is
set
to ACCEPT.

Anyone that came across the same problem with 2.2.x? I really want
the new features that comes with RedHat 6.0 and SuSE 6.1 but internet
access is even more crucial. Please give me some hints?
Thanks.
Christer

This is your problem right here...

I had the same problem at home, and managed to fix it. (I am running SuSE
6.0) You must go to the diald home page, get diald version 0.99-1, compile and
install it. It now works perfectly for me. I am running SET@Home, day and
night, which automatically dials out every 8 hours or so, when a work unit is
completed. It even works with IP Masquerading - when IE starts up on the
networked Win95 box the Linux server tied to the modem dials automaticaly, and
shuts down when the link is dormant for a while.

If you are still having problems, I will post or e-mail you my configuration
files. Contact me at home:

In regard to your second question, I'm not quite sure I understand, but here is
the ansawer to what I think you are trying to ask. You can add shares by
editing the /etc/smb.conf (or if you are running RedHat 6.0, linuxconf will add
for you). At the end of the file it should show some example shares that are
commented out. If not, check /usr/doc/samba-* for sample files

Alright, I'm getting kind of flustered. After a bumpy start, I got my
linux box working with the help of the kind folks that frequent the Usenet
and aid the clueless (of which I am one). I thought I had PPP working.
Hell, I HAD PPP working! I could cruise the web, recieve email, and people
could connect to my web server.

Well, things haven't been going to well as of late. To put it simply, PPP
only works sporadically. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.
Sometimes I can try it many, many times, and it doesn't work at all.
Sometimes it works on the first try. I'm using the same commands and the
same configuration files every single time--so why does it only sometimes
work? I am certain that it is a client issue: on my alternate OS, I use
the very same ISP, and I'm able to connect (virtually) every time. I mean,
I could understand if it worked. I could understand if it didn't work. The
first would mean that there was a fundamental problem with my
configuration, and I would need to find out what it is and fix it. On the
second, that would mean, of course, that my configuration is perfect and
no change are needed. But only working sometimes? I mean, what the hell?

In the log, the part where I encounter an error reads as follows:

It sounds like your name server is, in fact, not working correctly. Test it
using nslookup as explained in the docs.

Also, try using 0.0.0.0 for your local name server.

Hi,

I have a problem with Ip Aliasing and Slackware 4.0. I have not been
able to find a ip_alias module (ip_alias.o). I have added ip alias
support to the kernel and re-compiled my kernel, yet the only changes
that have been made are an alias of:
netalias-2 - ip_alias

anybody have any ideas on why i can't find this module? i'm using kernel
2.2.6
