I'm hoping someone out there can help me with a problem I'm having with
fetchmail. I'm setting up qmail to deliver mail, and it seems to be set
up correctly. I have tested out all the different combinations from the
TEST.deliver example file and they all work as they should. I can send
mail out from mutt without problems. The problem is that I can't get
fetchmail to work properly. It sees the messages on my POP3 account and
deletes them from the server, but they never show up in my mailbox.

Here's the output from fetchmail -v

Subject: DSL can't ping past gateway
Date: Sun, 19 Sep 1999 00:40:14 -0700

I am running SUSE 6.1 and have a 3com 905b that is recognized at
boot and ifconfig looks good. I can ping myself and several machines
on the local net using there IP addresses (guessing to find them). I also
can and telnet the gateway (pacbell.net), but I am unable to ping
anything past the gateway. The nameservers are outside the gateway so I
have big problems. I can hook the same DSL connection to a windows box and
ping the nameservers no problem. Everything works fine with windows.

Since the linux machine can reach several machines on the network as well as
the gateway, the only thing I can think of is some kind of non linux
friendly filter at the gateway that is dropping all my packets.
Is this possible? (It seems a little far fetched)
Any input would be apreciated.

Thanks in advance,
John Nolan

My company has a Lexmark 3200 printer and I know it don't work under
linux. And we consider to setup a linux printer server for our SMB
network. And can we use this print from our WIN9X client to our Linux
printer Server by samba? And tell us the difference progress to make it
work since we cannot.

Same thing happened to me, and if I remember what the problem was, is
the first
line was referring to a non-existant path to perl. Check that first.
Also, it
looks like I commented out the first four lines, starting with 'true'
and ending with if.

Didn't seem to work.. Possibly the version of Perl that ships with
RedHat 6.0 doesn't know the -S option, although IIRC it IS listed as an
option.. But I got it working (and I'm an idiot) so it's possible.. :)

No, I just upgraded to 2.2.12 and I'm getting the same error message. I
compiled the NFS support right into the kernel, not as a module. In
/var/log/messages, I get the message "rpc.nfsd: nfssvc: Function not
implemented" and "nfs: rpc.nfsd startup failed". I also find that I get a
core file in my startup directory after the computer finishes coming up, and
I don't know if that's what's causing it, but it's the only thing I can
think of since I'm not getting any other obvious errors.

I'm not sure what to make of it, because despite the messages my NFS seems
to be working fine. I can ping the other machine on my system and mount
filesystems with no apparent problems. Can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks.

This may be a really dumb question, but have you checked your linux
box recognises that the gateway is in fact a gateway? In your case it
sounds as if probably it is wanting to be a default gateway.

As far as I understand the ping packets sent from a Linux machine
should be exactly (no - possibly differing in default packet size) the
same as those from a Windoze box, and a gateway should not be able to
differentiate.

Hope this helps :O) I know the simplest things are often the last you
notice...

Errrr read the post

">> I disabled the pwer management options in the cmos set up also."

CMOS setup = BIOS settings...

But when you disable this, make sure it is *totally* disabled, and not
monitoring any part of the machine. Don't disable just sub-options,
there should be an option for 'Power Management (APM)' turn this off
and all the other options should gray out/disappear depending on the
BIOS in question. I will point out that activity related to the
network will usually also keep the machine alive under power
management, if the bios is correctly setup to monitor the IRQ that
your NIC is attached to.

Thanks L J Bayuk.

I've gotten it to at least get as so far that I can now successfuly
ypcat passwd from a remote machine. Now when I ypinit it looks like
this

[root@xfiles yp]# ./ypinit -m
We need some minutes to build the databases...
Building /var/yp/xxxx/ypservers...
Running /var/yp/Makefile...
gmake[1]: Entering directory `/var/yp/xxxx'
Updating passwd.byname...
Updating passwd.byuid...
Updating group.byname...
Updating group.bygid...
Updating hosts.byname...
Updating hosts.byaddr...
Updating rpc.byname...
Updating rpc.bynumber...
Updating services.byname...
Updating netid.byname...
Updating protocols.bynumber...
Updating protocols.byname...
Updating mail.aliases...
Updating shadow.byname...
gmake[1]: Leaving directory `/var/yp/xxxx'
[root@xfiles yp]#

It this normal for it just to end by leaving the directory? It used to
have that message telling me it was made a master server.

And what else do I have configure to allow a client system to allow NIS
users to logon? Currently any user created on the ypserver goes
unnoticed by the other computers.

Thanks,
Jeff

In my (perhaps somewhat limited!) experience, Linux boxes setup
correctly only crash if they run out of useable memory... this may
happen under network loads, especially with the proxy having several
objects cached in memory at once

I have a firewalling packet forwarder on a 33.6 modem, this is only a
386sx20 with 6Mb RAM and about 32Mb swap, and it only swaps about 3Mb
tops, it has been up for.. (checks..) 11 days, 23h and 45 minutes, not
a hitch. Only went down b/c the modem (internal) crashed and refused
to hang up. It is not however proxying which would greatly increase
it's load! I have severely load tested it several times with the four
computers I have attached to it's internal net and it doesn't miss a
beat....

Increasing the amount of RAM or possibly swap (eeewww) space may or
may not solve the problem :OP Good luck!

Subject: Autentication - Linux, Novell, Microshop

We have just replaced in our school our NT proxy server by Squid under
Suse Linux 6.0 (much faster than NT by the way).
Our network is composed of a Novell printer and file server, and a NT4
as DNS server that update all workstartions antivirus database.

Internet is accesible from all workstations.

However, we wish to filter packets from Squid in order to avoid ftp and
irc sessions for specific group or users. Today we only limited the
access according IP addresses with its corresponding limitations.

How started sessions from win95 can be autenticated by Squid ? We wish
this autentication process to be as simple as possible for users
(limiting the number of autentication screens).

Users and passwords are identical in both Novell and NT4 servers so both
sessions are run simultanously.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi all.

I have (or did have) diald running with RH 5.1 on a small network. Then I
discovered dialmon (0.8). It looks great, but I can't seem to get it to work
in daemon mode.

I've read the docs that came with it, installed the new diald script,
configured the dialmon.config, loaded the win95 programs, but when I try to
run it, the daemon seems to start, but I can't get diald to dial.

I also set up a link from /etc/diald.conf to /etc/diald/diald.conf because
diald looks for its configuration file in /etc.

The commands are getting thru to the linux box, because they appear in the
syslog. Any ideas?

Mount it via NFS and it'll show up as a local subdirectory. That's a
basic task and well documented.

Look at your modem's book and see what you have to do to change it to
ttyS1 (com2). Then change the /etc/conf.modules and what /dev/modem is
linked to. You're sharing an interrupt and that's bad.

Dan,

The difference is that the bridge is transparent. This is what I need.
To make this DLS mess work (because of issues with my ISP's DSLAM my
bridge needs to be transparent. Then... hopefully I need to do packet
filtering on the LAN side NIC, with an IP address assigned. Do you know
why CONFIG_BRIDGE is labeled experimental? Is it unstable? Am I wasting
my time. BTW the arrogance comment was not aimed at you...
