I recently tried to set up an old computer as a web server, using Linux and
Apache. It has limited hard drive space (1 gig), and I don't plan on using
it for anything besides the web serving, so I don't want a full-blown
installation of Linux (Mandrake 6 is what I use). I tried installing it
with just the base stuff and apache, but that didn't work. httpd is
running, but I'm not able to access the documents from any computer. Can
someone tell me the minimum stuff I need to install to get apache running.
Thanks.

I'm quite a new samba-user and still need some dancing lessons in brasil
dances, but the problem I am encountring here is quite strange.
I'm running the german SuSE 6.1 distribution with the samba-packages on this
distribution. If I run smbmount to mount a share on NT4 (SP4) I get really
strange dates as you can see below. I really have no idea what could be
wrong.
-rwxr-xr-x 1 jbergami users 94208 Sep 5 1904 ffastun.ffo
-rwxr-xr-x 1 jbergami users 692224 Sep 5 1904 ffastun0.ffx
-rwxr-xr-x 1 jbergami users 1342 Mar 31 2004 grob.bmp
-rwxr-xr-x 1 jbergami users 1342 Sep 13 2012 gut.bmp
-rwxr-xr-x 1 jbergami users 458880 Feb 21 2033 helpdesk.wav
I mount the share like this:
smbmount '\\mycomputer\myshare' -c 'mount /mnt/ntshare'
A friend of mine has got similar problems. He always gets error messages
like:
mv: preserving times for sharedir/a.file: Input/output error
Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be???

This is what I did:
get 3c59x.c from here
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/3c515.c
add this line to the pci_id_info
{"3cSOHO100-TX", 0x10b7, 0x7646, 0xffff,
PCI_USES_IO|PCI_USES_MASTER, IS_CYCLONE|HAS_NWAY|HAS_CB_FNS,
128, vortex_probe1},
follow these instructions for compiling
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/misc/modules.html
Then if you can ismod it with no errors
do this:
" 3c59x.o to /lib/modules/`uname -r`/net/ and add the following line
to /etc/conf.modules:
alias eth0 3c59x
"
Reboot
Should work fine from here on out. Here are the two URL's that helped
me
http://www.tux.org/hypermail/linux-vortex/1999-Apr/0012.html
(God Bless, Mr. Bill Paul)
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html
Good Luck,
Jason Todd
(maybe http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/3c59x.c is whats
needed, but.. dont know..)
I guess it will get into a that driver, maybe a updated driver eksist?

No, unless your statement above has a typo. It must be
LCK...ttyS3
otherwise it won't work.

Please edit /etc/inittab and add -x 9 to your mgetty invocation,
save, run "init q" to restart mgetty , and then show us the
resulting logfile (of an unsuccessful PPPD call).

the standard may be out, but the libraries and implementations are
still catching up and they will be doing so for a good while longer.
even conforming implementations may well have conflicting binaries.
in effect, it's almost as annoying as a moving standard. despite a
standard, i still have 4 incompatible versions of libstdc++.
> Please be careful not to fud.
standards are always being revised. fortran has had how many
revisions? there are at least iv, 66, 77 and 90. C has had K&R, ANSI
and is getting a new revision called C9X although X seems to be likely
to exceed 9. there will be a new C++ along in a few years. just you
wait.

You say there APPEAR to be no hardware conflict. Please note that, with or
without isapnp, Linux may very well fail to find DMA conflicts! The base
address of your ethernet-card is set to 0x230. That may conflict with both
the 0x220-0x3f region that is used by almost ANY sound-card, and the
0x240-0x25f domain that is used by many SCSI-adaptors, and maybe others. If
your bourd is jumperless, it probably came with a DMA/IRQ setup tool (for
DOS, usually, goodluck on that), otherwise you might switch some jumpers to
set the ioport to a safer address, such as 0x340.
Hope it's of any help

Hello,
I have two network adaptors : 1 is lan the other is connectinf the=20
cable modem
I have a dialin link through a modem (mgetty + pppd)
When I login from a machine accross the net I can see samba drives,=20
access internet and run Xwindow (from Windows98) with a Xwindow=20
client.
When I login through the PPP link (modem) I access internet but the=20
Xclient will not work, I use XDPM protocol, the server shows as=20
BRODCASTING but it will not open a session and the netwok (samba) does=20
not work. I cannot even ping my server from the Windows98 client but I=20
access the second adaptor (connected to the cable modem).
In fact my server acts as a provider when you enter through the PPP=20
link.
How can I gain access to SAMBA and XWINDOW through the PPP link.
Thanks for your help in advance.
Best regards

Subject: Newbie Sendmail and DNS Problem

I have two questions.
First, is it a good idea to create a primary DNS on the same server as
my web server and put the secondary DNS on the mail server?
Second, I have two mail servers in one domain. On each of the mail
servers an alias will exist on both servers. The mail server,
mail1.shonne.org will handle will accounts which consist of
[EMAIL PROTECTED] which will be forwarded to account
[EMAIL PROTECTED] The mail server, mail2.shonne.org will handle
will accounts which consist of [EMAIL PROTECTED] which will be forwarded
to account [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have the Linux Box running with one
mail server, but how do I go with [EMAIL PROTECTED] be forwarded to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is what I did for
the email system with one mail server per one domain. This is what I
did: In the zonefile for shonne.org I added:
@ IN SOA (...
...)
NS ns.shonne.org
MX 100 mail.shonne.org
ns A 10.0.0.1 (<--- Changed IP Addresses)
mail A 10.0.0.2
Cw localhost shonne.org.
==========>can I change this to:<==============
@ IN SOA (...
...)
NS ns.shonne.org
MX 100 mail1.shonne.org
MX 100 mail2.shonne.org
ns A 10.0.0.1
mail A 10.0.0.2
mail A 10.0.0.3

Anyone have any suggestions.
Thanx.

Subject: NIS Set-up
Date: Thu, 24 Jun 1999 22:47:30 GMT
Hi all!
I have to set up a NIS server using Linux (and many NIS clients, of
course!). I've just installed Slackware 4.0 and it came with ypserv,
ypbind and all the stuff needed. I run ypserv -d and get something like
that:
[Welcome to the NYS YP Server, version 1.3.6 (with securenets)]
Find securenet: 255.0.0.0 127.0.0.0
Find securenet: 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
ypserv.conf: 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0:shadow.byname:2:1:2
ypserv.conf: 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0:passwd.adjunct.byname:2:1:2
.. as you see, i've not played with securenets yet!
Then, I fire ypbind -d on the client:
parsed ypserver SERVERNAME (I yon't put my server name here!!)
bindto_server: domain linux_seg, host SERVERNAME
add_server() domain: linux_seg, host: SERVERNAME, nobroadcast, slot: 0
updated entry for domain linux_seg: server SERVER_IP_ADDRESS, port 694
pinging server SERVER_IP_ADDRESS, port 69
So, it seems to work fine. But when I issue a command like "ypcat
passwd" on the client, ypserv gives me theese messages:
ypproc_all_2_svc(): [From: CLIENT_IP_ADDRESS]
domain = "linux_seg"
map = "passwd.byname"
db_open("linux_seg", "passwd.byname")
->Returning OK!
Opening: linux_seg/passwd.byname (0) 805a670
ypdb_close() called
connect from CLIENT_IP_ADDRESS
Found: linux_seg/passwd.byname (0)
-> First value returned.
ypproc_domain("linux_seg") [From: CLIENT_IP_ADDRESS:944]
connect from CLIENT_IP_ADDRESS
-> Ok.
And on the client, ypbind gives me nothing. The result of the ypcat
command is:
No such map passwd.byname. Reason: YP server error
Where should I look to solve the problem?? (I've look in the NIS HOWTO,
buy I couldn't find any answer to my problem...)

Try add a gateway address on the remote machine so that it knows where
192.168.0.0 is. I had a similiar problem having my work machine connect to
my home Linux box through our firewall. I just added the gateway on my home
box and it worked. Look in /var/log/xdm-errorlog (sp?) for auth errors.

AutoPPP uses pap/chap authentication. Ie, you must have an appropriate
pap-secrets or chap-secrets file. And you must tell your system which to
use ( eg require-pap or require-chap as options for pppd.)

No it wasn't. It's still there. It still unencrypts itself
and runs. It has just been "defanged" so the "error" box
doesn't pop up.
There were concerns in the higher echelons in Microsoft
about what Digital Research would do to them in court if
they tied MS-DOS and Windows together in this way.
They weren't rich enough in those days to buy things like
that.
Ironically Caldera (son of Digital Research) is taking them
to court about them tying MS-DOS and Windows together. I
have heard that Microsoft estimates that it will cost at
least $1.2 billion to settle. Probably more if the evidence
already accumulated is released (again in their estimation).

I believe at this point, you may have confused yourself. You
actually got it right at the top of the message (The very
first line). These machines do not achieve 99.8% uptime. The
*site as a whole* does. This 99.8% is *with* all the
mirroring. This means that the site is unavailable for 0.2%
of the time. Any customer trying to use the site during this
time will see the downtime. It doesn't sound much, but it
more than half a day per year.

The alternative is for Microsoft to contract to IBM who
offer a 99.9% service, or money off your next renewal.
