I think you misundstood his point.

If I'm using a C library, my program might have to say:

some_function( &x );

so, when debugging, I know right there that I can't assume x won't be
altered. The same thing in C++ would be:

some_function( x );

but I don't know whether I'm passing by value or by reference or const
by reference. I have to go and find the header, then look through it to
find the prototype for that function. It would be useful if there were a
syntax difference.

It's only a development time problem of course, not a serious design
flaw.

Subject: 2.2.10 problems with 2nd NETjet card
Date: Sat, 26 Jun 1999 23:35:44 +1000

I was using a 2.0.35 kernel with an append line in
lilo.conf to detect a second NETjet hisax based card;

append="hisax=20,2,0,0,0,20,2,0,0,0"

however since upgrading to a 2.2.10 kernel the system
gets this far on bootup;

Lilo
Loading Linux ...

and then hangs so I presume something is different
with how 2.2.* kernels load off HDD boot blocks so
I rolled another kernel using modules intead. Now I
have this line in the ISDN startup script (all else
remains the same except changing the "status" line
to "dialmode");

/sbin/modprobe -a hisax type=20,20 protocol=2,2 id="HiSax"

and "cat /proc/pci" does indeed show two cards;

Bus 0, device 11, function 0:
Network controller: TigerJet Tiger300 ISDN (rev 0).
Medium devsel. IRQ 5. Master Capable. Latency=8.
   I/O at 0x7c00 [0x7c01].
   Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xef001000 [0xef001000].
Bus 0, device 12, function 0:
Network controller: TigerJet Tiger300 ISDN (rev 0).
Medium devsel. IRQ 7. Master Capable. Latency=8.
   I/O at 0x6000 [0x6001].
   Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xef002000 [0xef002000].

But now when dialing out the 3rd channel on the 2nd
card seems to have trouble extablishing and maintaining
a connection, the main problem seems to be here;

: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
: Connection terminated.
: taking down PHASE_DEAD link 2, linkunit: 2
: LCP is down
: closing fd 9 from unit 2
: link 2 closed , linkunit: 2
: reinit_unit: 2
: Connect[2]: /dev/ippp2, fd: 9

where the 1st channel of the 2nd card does not complete
it's LCP negotiation. The config is a 2.2.10 kernel with
15-Jun-99 CVS code + utils and the system has been working
for 6 months on a 2.0.35 kernel with lilo detecting both
cards Any help would be appreciated,

a) would anyone know how I could get the original working
lilo append line working with a 2.2.10 kernel

b) some hints as to why the modules version of a working
   configuration is now not working

The full /var/log/message transcript follows and I'd be
happy to provide /dev/isdnctrl0 output or any configs
to anyone if that would help diagnose this at all.

Subject: FTP and IPchains\Masquerading
Date: Sat, 26 Jun 1999 13:49:07 GMT

Hello I wonder if anyone can help me?
I have been trying and failing to access a company ftp site that is
not running on port 21 (the reasons for this are a paranoid IT
Director who decided it would be best to keep our sensitive data as
well hidden as possible).
I am am running a small home network using a RH6 machine as my web
gateway using ipchains\masquerading, everything else works ok just
the ftp side is giving me hell. I get as far as the LIST -L command in
my ftp client (Cuteftp) and it just hangs until I stop the process.
Cute tells me it "couldnt build a data connection".
Previously I had been running an NT4 machine with Sygate as the
gateway and it worked fine after I added a rule for the port to the
config file.
I have tried adding the ip_masq_ftp module line also including a
ports=ip_masq_ftp XXX line to my rc.firewall file but it makes no
difference, it refuses to play ball.
I'd hate to go back to using an NT Machine as my gateway but it seems
I will have to.
Is it an impossibilty or am I missing something obvious. Does NT4 win
hands down on this occasion?

No thank you! If it wasn't for you, I would have had no reason to send

The data is stored in memory, but you can dump it to a file.

It is described in 'man named'.

You do it by sending a SIGINT to named (kill -INT `pidof named`)
The data ends up in /var/tmp/named_dump.db

There also exists an utility in the bind-package called 'ndc'
(name deamon control) that might be an idea to look at (man ndc).
Then you can do a 'ndc dumpdb' to do the same as above.

: Jun 24 17:19:28 localhost kernel: FF 03 00 21 45 00 00 2D ...!E..-

: Jun 24 17:19:28 localhost kernel: 01 .

These are IP packets and in the absence of FCS errors I'd believe
that they are OK. Your problem is receiving and since there's no
mention of any received packet I take it that there weren't any
of those.

I'm baffled too now. Repeating, the PPP link looked good as did the
routing, and if the serial port configuration is OK then I'm out of
suggestions.
..

: also I was wondering if their is any way of finding out what the various
: kdebug levels do sort of greping through the source? its not in the
: ppp howto files is there a web site that has this stuff?
: thanks

The pppd manual pages give a brief description of the kdebug printout
for 1, 2, and 4 . The other levels are sums of these and aggregate
the printouts, except 0 which seems to be equivalent to removing kdebug
altogether.

Well ! I've downloaded both files a few days ago and I've been reading them
time and again...

Alas there are a few things I don't really understand !!!

Both files are indeed very comprehensive, but there are some things that are
supposed to be already done once you start installing and /or cheking the
Samba installation thanks to these files , like some dirs and things like
that !!

Unfortunately, and in spite of the explanations I couldn't get my Linux PC
working properly...

My problem is that I don't know what I'm supposed to do to key in the data
about my win98 computer in Linux such as Ip adress, submask, account and
etc...

What are these steps ?? If I can't tell Linux where it has to look for the
other machine and how !! it'll be unable to make Samba working properly !!!

Man pages are way to complicated and as I said in my first e-mail I can't go
any further without those thing fully installed on Linux !!!

Can you help me ???

Thanks again for your answer !

Phil.

Subject: DNS help!!!
Date: Sat, 26 Jun 1999 10:01:30 -0400

Have posted this in the DNS news group, but no help.. So thought I would try
here.

Good morning... I have been following this news group for some time now and
have learned more then I ever could from a Book or how to.. Now I'm in need
of some help and thought I'd try here...

First, I'm fairly new to Linux and Bind.... I just reregistered a domain
with interNic

pcvalley.com

Second I'm on a cable modem with a fixed IP. My provider told me to setup
my own DNS and use him as secondary..

I have not been able to locate a good book on Bind & DNS from the local
stores, so I have been relegated to using only the man bind doc's and
Nicolai Langfeldt's DNS HOWTO v2.2 11 Feb 1999.
(quite a helpful source http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/DNS-HOWTO.html)

Anyway, now here is the problem.. Perhaps a pasted copy of the Linux log
will best serve here:

Sample 1.

Now just last night this entry at 04:43:46 started and is repeating its
self... I cant find reference to either of these problems in anything I
have read so far... I need help!!!

Also how do I stop these entries going into the /var/log/messages log and
perhaps redirect the out put to a new log file and have it automatically
print it's display in one of the Logon screens..

Sorry for this long post.. If I have offended anyone or violated some size
of post rule I indeed am sorry....

Thanks Ed

Subject: Henryk Paluch's Lexmark 5700 Printer driver
Date: Sat, 26 Jun 1999 16:43:08 +0200

Hi all,
I've got the latest version of Henryk Paluch's Lexmark 5700 Printer
Driver for Linux.
I compiled as he wrote (Make (then) Make install). I'm using SuSE 6.0
Now he wrote in his readme that I have to change the /etc/printcap file.
The problem is that I'll access this printer via network because it's
connected to a remote NT machine. (It won't matter if I have to use TCP/IP
Printing or Samba (NetBios printing (I think)). What entry do I need to do
in the /etc/printcap file???
I'm a total newbie (using Linux for 4 Days ;-)) and I'm happy that I
configured X-Windows correctly. Now my only prob is the printer.

Thanks in advance for answer, (via E-Mail, too if it is possible.)
    Freddy
