Subject: Radio Modem TCP/IP link
Date: Fri, 25 Dec 1998 15:22:38 +0100
Hi
I run a project where we designed a radio modem
this modem acts as a serial cable.
Now that we are testing we will try at 9600 bps but we
will increase the speed to 38400 bps when we get it working.
The question is...how do we link two existing tcp/ip networks
with a serial cable...
i am aware of the routing issues....the main problem is getting
the link up and running.
We'd like the modems to have their IP addresses set to
a subnet under 192.168.1.0,
because the two networks has 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.128
and 192.168.0.128/255.255.255.128
what programs are best for this kind of link...
help is accepted with grattitude

I have tried messing with the card and the NIC settings to no avail.
Yesterday I downloaded a new LINUX tulip.c driver from the LinkSys web site
but (sine I am a newbie) I am not sure how to re-compile the kernel to
activate the new driver.
Thanks.

I have the following setup:
Linux server running RedHat 5.1, Workstation is dual boot RedHat 5.2 and Winnt
w/ SP4
Problem: Under NT, I browse the Network neighborhood - I can initially see
the server listed, but when I go to either map the drives, or explore the
server from explorer, I get the following error message:
\\SERVER(Name of Machine)is not accessible
The network path was not found
I have the book "Linux Network Toolkit", which has been a great resource, but
it uses Win95 as the client machine, and I am running NT, so many of the
things relating to the windows side is not relevent.
I can connect with my RedHat partition, print via network printing and browse
the local server for the web development that I do, so I know my IP network is
running.
Any Ideas?

I would stay away from the telephone lines. Telephone lines don't have the
shielding, the correct number of twists, nor the correct pinouts.
I have run Cat5 (Cat3 is for 10 mbps, Cat5 is for 100 mbps).

My problem is that I need to make a connection to the internet by modem for
upgrading X-server, but I can't run X for the moment.
Is it possible to connect myself and download the update by ftp, without
running the X-server?
I've never made a connection with linux, so please tell me how I have to do
it. Please tell me also which program I've to use to ftp(and how I have to
use it)?
Thanks
Please send the answer also to my email adress.

I would agree with the others who said to run new cable. But if
you're determined to use the existing cable, there is a solution.
This shares the pair being used by the phone instead of depending on
any unused wire being present.
http://www.tutsys.com/homerun_overview.htm
It isn't cheap, about $150 per station. Even paying someone to run
Cat 5 is likely to be cheaper. Not to mention much faster.

When im dialing out under Win95, i can do this without any dialtone (is

My question: Am i able to dial out with my linux without a dialtone??

Funny how you mention protruding things. I was drilling through a 2*4 on a
ceiling rafter so I could drop the cable in between the wall below. Apparently
(i still don't know how this happened to this day) something is sloped because
I ended up drilling through to the ceiling below. Not knowing I did this I
said after walking down stairs sweaty and covered fiber glass cotton candy type
material " I am done drilling all I need to do now is fish the wire through the
wall and etc". Then I heard, What are going to do about the ceiling? I said
what about it? then I saw the hole. :)
Oh well, it needed painted any way.

Just worked through a similar problem myself. (I don't fully
understand this yet, so anyone please correct me on any inaccuracies.)
Your problem with the PPP connection may be that your default route is
on eth0. pppd won't replace an existing default route. Try typing
'route del default', then invoking pppd with the 'defaultroute'
option. This should clear up your problem.
If this works, you might want to comment out the lines in your startup
scripts which set the default route. On my system, these are located
in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 (I'm using Slackware 3.4).
Hope this helps!

Am wondering what the following 2 files provide info
about under Linux:
/proc/sys/kernel/file-max
/proc/sys/kernel/file-nr
It seems that from installation to installation, load
to load these numbers vary substrantially. I cannot
figure it out. I have managed to change these values
which definitely displays the behavior I need.
However, I have one machine is relatively inactive.
Catting these 2 files shows:
1024
and
1024
On a very heavily hit server, they are:
2048
and
512
(I have changed the value of file-max on the second
machine.)
Any insight would be very helpful.
Happy Holidays.

PPP config Problems
Sorry peeps, but I wonder if someone could give me a hand..? I'v been
trying to get the PPPD up and running on my box, and have so far
failed miserably. The main problem is I can't see what is failing, so
I don't know how to put it right.
I'm using a chat script to dial. This works OK. Dials, connects,
authenticates, and I get the message 'Connected'.
BUT, thats it. I cannot ping. Then, about a minute later, I'm
disconnected.
Looking in /var/log, I have...
PPP 2.2.0 started
Serial connection established (using PPP0)
Connect: PPP0 <--> /dev/modem
Sent [LCP ConfReq id 0x1 <mru 1500> <asyncmap 0x20a0000>
magic 0x757b7a10 <pcomp> <accomp> ]
Last message repeated 9 times
LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Connection terminated
Receive serial link is not 8 bit clean:
Problem: all had bit 7 set to 0
Exit
What am I missing, and how do I put it right?

What's better about Redhat 5.2 than it's (RH) pred. ???
=================================================================
Besides the install is there anything better in the following areas.
Configuring:
SAMBA
NOVELL connectivity.
SENDMAIL
PPPD
X-windows
My main work is setting up email servers. I have noticed that there is
really very little GOOD documentation out there for people who are
setting up servers that are not connected to T1's full time.
For example, sendmail must be reconfigured not to try to ship mail
immed. (at least in RH 5.0). Most of the machines I set up do dial up
UUCP or dialup SMTP.
I've spent countless hours trying to setup SAMBA and Novell shares
unsuccessfully.
Since I am not a programmer the best I can do is suggest to the Linux
community that someone out there "PLEASE" start to write configuration
scripts that lead you through the install of these packages.
If I had to speak badly of Linux the only thing I could think of is
that Installing a package (like an RPM) is really nothing more than
copying a bunch of files into various directories. Once they are there
it is up to the user to dig through the makefile and figure out whats
going on (no wonder the sendmail book looks like it does).
Hasn't anyone out there attempted to write a script that configures
the system for you asking question by question? (Like customizing the
kernal does)
The only piece of software I found truly easy to install was Sybase's
ASE. Sure it had to be done through the command line, but it prompted
you for everyting. Thanks for a great product!
Please, do respond to this message. I'd love to here more about the
advances going on. I've been working with Linux for ages, but like
most of my UNIX work I feel that I never really understand all that is
going on under the covers.

I have RH 5.2 and am trying to connect to my ISP. What happens is the modem
will dial and "talk" to the other modem, then after a few minutes the modem
will redial. In the space between the modem dialing and then redialing my
PPP connection is inactive causing Netscape to cease functioning. I don't
understand what has gone wrong. The connection used to work, but then it
just stopped functioning. I have tried using 'netcfg' and I have tried
using 'Kppp' which gives me the error "the pppd daemon died unexpectedly'.
If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate them.

Hi. I am a newbie myself, but seem to be a few weeks ahead of you :-)
Did you fill up you /etc/hosts file?
Mine looks like that:
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain # loopback
223.254.254.1 marie.linuxnet marie # the same as localhost
223.254.254.2 hacker.linuxnet hacker # myother computer
Did you fill up your /etc/hosts.allow file?
# # hosts.allow This file describes the names of the hosts whichare
# allowed to use the local INET services, as decided
# by the '/usr/sbin/tcpd' server.
#
hacker.linuxnet
hacker
Did you have proper interface configuration and routing? This part is not
clear
to me (I mean, I am not sure where you should put it. I created a small script
that
looks like that and called it from one of the boot scritps:
#!/bin/sh
ifconfig eth0 hacker
route add hacker
After I had done all of this and everything worked (except mail), I discovered
this program:
/bin/netconf
that does everyhing for you, just enter the information.
Merry Christmas.

Can someone point me in the right direction on how to configure my linux box
(RH 5.2) for dialin access using ppp? Initially, I'm willing to settle for
static IP's for my dial-in clients (per TTY). Eventually, I may switch to
dynamic IP address. But, static IPs are fine for now.
I've tried looking for info on mgetty and I even tried the RH linuxconf's
version of a ppp account. The information I found is scanty and the linux
box doesn't answer the incoming call. My kernel has been compiled with IP

Can anyone help?

here it is again (not that it was particularly insightful the first time):

IMHO procmail is not very flexible as an MTA and you should use smail or
sendmail with UUCP for offline delivery. If you must stay with procmail
then I suspect the recipe needs modifying to sort mail based on the path
headers at the top, rather than the To: header which as you say may bear
no relation to the user's email address. Take a look in /etc/procmailrc.

All I can suggest with the info you gave, is read the man page for
route, I suspect that you need to add the route for your ppp0 device.

Subject: can not see smbd/nmbd daemons running
Date: Sat, 26 Dec 1998 03:01:12 GMT
Hi,
I am trying to configure my PII (windows98) as client and P133 (RH 5.2
Linux)as a server using samba. I am able to ping/telnet the linux machine
from windows and vice versa. But I am unable to "browse" Linux machine from
windows.
I am running smbd and nmbd daemons manually using /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb script.
After running smb script I do not see smbd or nmbd process running ( ps aux |
grep smbd/nmbd does not report anything). smbd is called with -D option and
nmbd is called using -D and -G my_group options.
Any thoughts as to why I these daemons are not running in background ???
Thank you for your time.
