Heh.. Like a slap in the face.. =)
Well, first off I'd like to thank the people who sent me a response in
my previous problem with getting my NIC card to work.. I can now
successfully mount a Win98 drive to my RH Linux machine using
smbmount, although I haven't been able to setup my Linux dirs to be
mountable on Win98 yet.. One step at a time.. =)
The thing that's kept me from pursuing this next goal is that once I
finally got my IPs setup and was able to do this minimum amount of
networking, all of the sudden my pppd doesn't want to work anymore..
I'm running Gnome with the Enlightenment manager, and use the Gnome
PPP dialer utility that came with the RPMs I d/led.. It worked fine
before.. Now it says " The pppd daemon died unexpectantly".
Ok.. So I go back into netcfg and look at the Interfaces section
there.. Surprisingly, only to see that my ppp0 entry has been
removed! I know it wasn't me.. must of been the gremlins that raided
my machine after midnight..
So I go to re-add my ppp0 entry, only for it to tell me that now
/dev/modem doesn't exist..
Strike 2
So I go into control-panel and use the modem utility there to set cua1
as my modem config, try to reactivate my ppp0 entry through netcfg,
and it just sits there.. doesn't dial like it used to..
I go back to the Gnome PPP dialer I switched to using, and it still
won't connect..
So now I'm at a loss.. I've searched through numerous HOWTOs and man
pages concerning PPP and Ethernet setup, and have had no luck
encountering such a problem. In fact, I haven't seen much in the way
of having a private network between two machines, while having a
dialup PPP account on the Linux side at all..
Is the local IP network I setup somehow interfering with me being able
to dial out on my Linux machine? I also have a modem on my Win98 box
and it works fine.
Here's a quick rundown of my systems if it helps any
=================================================================================
Win98 Linux
=========== =========
PII-350 K6-200
USR 56K USR 33.6
Kingston KNE20T Same, it's also NE2000 compatible
192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1
That's the relevant info I think may be needed..
I only want to net the two for file and printer sharing..
Don't really want a Gateway to the I-Net on the Linux since it's a
slower modem.. If I want to do that I may just look for options on the
'98 side.. Or else switch modems b/t the machines.. =)
Actually I just thought of one thing that may be the prob.. My NICs
don't have jumpers. You have to boot in DOS mode and run a config
program to update the settings.. On the Linux machine, some reason
the program found a conflict on port 240 with the NIC and switched it
to port 260 with IRQ 3. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't IRQ 3 also
used for Com2 (cua1)?
Amazing the things you think of when you write such annoyingly long
messages!
Could the IRQ conflict be causing the problem, or would there be any
other conflicts involved if I correct this one? Are there any other
things I need to make sure I have setup correctly to ensure that my
private network and outside I-Net connection won't have any other
problems?
I'm gonna go check out this IRQ thing and see if that corrects it.
Thanx for the help!

Subject: tcp_timestamps causing massive network slowdown problems under 2.2.x
Date: Sun, 27 Jun 1999 05:06:32 +0000
I have just had a couple of fun days trying to work out why my http
downloads slow to a crawl from certain sites.
I solved the problem by setting /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_timestamps = 0.
Is this a known problem?
I found that, with timestamps on, packets from problematic sites
(www.isc.org was the one I tripped over) were showing up as fragmented
by tcpdump, even though I have the kernel compiled to reassemble
fragmented packets. In addition, the remote http host took yonks
(minutes at a time) to respond.
Typically, a 1460-byte packet would be fragmented into 1448 and 12.
Disabling timestamps solved the problem - no fragmenting, no slowdown,
nice whizzy downloads. I now have:
cat 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_timestamps
in my rc.local, and everything is fine.
I reproduced the problem under both 2.2.1 and 2.2.10, and with all
manner of network-related bits both compiled in and left out of the
kernel (all in an effort to diagnose the problem). I reproduced it with
both lynx and communicator, as well. My connection to the internet is
via dial-up ppp; and stuffing with all the available ppp options
(compression, mru, mtu, etc.) did nothing to solve the problem. Other
machines - both win95 and linux 2.0.36 - using this box as a gateway to
the internet did not have the problem (timestamps were not set on their
packets).
Should somebody be fixing something in the timestamping code, or is my
"fix" just working around the real problem?

Have you looked at the files under a path like /usr/doc/HOWTO?

In theory, you're right.
In practice, C++ is a much more complex language. As such, C++
compilers are much more complex beasts. And that is why some C++
compilers do not generate as good code as the equivalent C compilers do.
In effect, what you're saying is "there is no theoretical reason why C++
would be any slower than C". And you're right.
But what others are saying is "a lot of existing C++ compilers generate
worse code than a lot of existing C compilers". And they are right too.
Sometimes theory matters. Sometimes it doesn't. The world is not as
simple as you make it out to be.

I'm using prodigy right now. In Slackware 4.0, using kppp, it was a
breeze. It's basically supposed to be straightforward PAP for the
authentification. I used ezppp before, in Slack 3.6, and it was equally
simple. You shouldn't use a terminal to connect, in either Windows or
Linux, or a script in Linux, since this will only confuse the server.
Select "PAP" and let the program do its trick.

Subject: downloads slow with 2.2 kernel
Date: Sat, 26 Jun 1999 23:02:15 -0700
Problem is with ppp performance on RedHat 6.0 system with 2.2.5 kernel
compared to performance on RedHat 5.2 system with 2.0.36 kernel.
Problem is downloading of large (200 to 400K) JPEG and GIF files on
RedHat 6.0 system causes Netscape to continually stall and stop
receiving data many times during the download. If you leave Netscape
along, eventually the link will begin sending data again, and the status
message will change from stalled to the amount of data coming over the
connection. Do not have this problem with RedHat 5.2 with 2.0.36
kernel. Using same ppp scripts and serial port setup on both systems.
It seems to me that the 2.2 series kernels may be having a flow control
or some other problem with large downloads. Has anyone else experienced
similar problems with the 2.2 series kernels?
