I have been trying to add a new user to my Linux system, but when I
attempt to set the password, it gives me a message "can't lock password
file, try again later". I can not log in under this username, and I am
assuming that has something to do with this error. I am fairly new to
administration on Linux systems, so any help would be most appreciated.

How about portslave?

set up on your modem line to do the job.

You can't telnet to the windows box.

But the reason you can't telnet to the linux box from windows is probably
because
the linux box can't do a reverse-lookup on the host you're trying to telnet
from. If it
can't resolve a name from the ip address trying to connect you will have
problems.

A hosts file should fix that or a local dns with reverse-lookup zone file
will do it too.

May have to change /etc/hosts.conf depending on which method you choose.

Easiest way is probably just create an /etc/hosts file.

Is the card in pnp mode ? Why don't you compile a new kernel
with support for your card ? Have you checked for a conflict with
another device ?

I have seen this error in conjunction with having a bad executable,
usually an incorrect path for the #! interpreter path.

I don't know if I'd call it a bug. Why would you have the server on a 10Mb
segment anyway?

Using RH6.0 - Samba installed - Can ping eth0 and local
machine (192.168.0.1). Get {YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN: Domain not
bound} on nearly every command issued.
What is this? Where/how to fix, before going on to linking
a W95 machine via Linksys Hub/card setup ??
Also - Do I need to set W95 logon config in the Linux Box
before setting up the Win box ??

Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 15:43:48 GMT

Is this Possible? Can I hook up our office computers running Win95 to a
Linux box running Apache & Samba, then connect the Linux box to a Win98
box running Wingate, which in turns connects and has an account on the
NT4 Proxy the company is running to access the Internet?

It sounds painful just repeating it, does anyone out there think it's
actually possible to do?

The Linux server is not a member of the NT4's domain, so consequently
hasnt' got access to the internet, but the WIN98 box does, so....

And please don't ask why we want to do it, suffice to say the powers
that be don't wish this office to have individual internet access and we
do. Which is why I think we want to use the LINUX box...They know
nothing about Linux...

Thanks
eldee

i've dl'd stuff from cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov, but it does not

ANY setup program (dos/win/*nix) - that will even
tell me if this card has pnp enabled or disabled?

Download an nmap 2.2 rpm from rufus.w3.org and install it using:

rpm -ivh nmap*.rpm

now portscan from from one box to a 6.0 box and see if port 21 (ftp) returns
anything. If it doesn't, chances are the daemon isn't running.

Also, starting the daemon by hand will do you no good. You need to have an
uncommented out entry in your /etc/inetd.conf file for the in.ftpd daemon
and if you have to make changes, do a kill -HUP on the inetd process to make
the changes active. The way this whole inetd thing works is inetd listens
for packets on the ports specified in the inetd.conf. When it receives a
connection on port 21 (ftp) for instance, it starts an instance of the
in.ftpd daemon to handle that connection. The next connection will be
farmed to another daemon instance, etc. For every connection, there will
be a in.ftpd process. If there are no current connections, there should be
no in.ftpd process running.

To really test this correctly, you should on the RedHat 6.0 box you want to
ftp to:
1) empty the /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny or comment every line out
2) make sure there is an uncommented in.ftpd line in the /etc/inetd.conf
3) make sure there is a file /usr/sbin/in.ftpd
4) ps x | grep inetd
5) kill -HUP [process # for inetd from step 4]
6) now try and ftp into the RedHat 6.0 box

ok - here's a WEIRD 1:
i'm running mandrake 6.0 (2.2.9) and am TRYING to
setup a 3com etherlink 3 (3c509b) 10base2/aui card.

I want the card to be @ 0x300, irq 5, 10base2.

I've downloaded apps @ cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov
that allow me to both diagnose & set(up) the card.

both the setup program AND the diag program see the card,
and acknowledge that i've setup it up correctly (0x300,5,bnc).

now - here's the problem -
my conf.modules (excerpt) look like:
#
alias eth0 3c509
options 3c509 io=0x300 irq=5
#

when i try to "ifconfig eth0 up" (or various permutations)
I get: unknown interface: no such device.

HOW can ifconfig NOT see the nic, when these other apps
see it no problem!!!!??????

btw - those who respond - "pay $10 for a new card" need not reply! :)

try man dot-qmail also try reading the FAQ that came with qmail.

once you have read that, in the ~mail directory write several .qmail
files

ie .qmail-fred
   .qmail-foo

In each of these files have the relevant delivery instructions for that
particular message

At any time you have a .qmail-something it is always a good idea to have a
.qmail-default entry.

I have a database running on a Debian 2.1 SLINK box, kernel 2.0.36,
Pentium 333 128Mb RAM Ultra ATA HDD.

The database tables are aprox 10Mb each and when there is a lot of data to
be
processed I am getting big slow-downs on the linux box (runs samba 1.9.18).

"top" doesn't show anything perculiar - the system appears to be running
fine
and all other operations are fine - just some database reports take WAY too
long (on Novell
server they were very fast).

User also reports that users that the first users to connect in the morning
experience fast
access but late arrivers to access the database experience big delays in
using the database - don't
know how true that is but something to ponder.

Any ideas ? About 20 PCs accessing the server through a 10Meg broadcast
hub -
some operations taking about 3mins when they should be taking about 3secs.

put the file.

Is it posible to redirect a port using ipmasqadm to muliple machines on a
LAN? Below is an example of how I redirected the ports to onle ONE machine:

ipmasqadm autofw -A -r tcp 2300 2400 -h 192.168.0.20

Thanks,

Subject: Linux bridge -> Alcatel 1000 DSL modem
Date: Tue, 29 Jun 1999 16:41:27 GMT

I'm not completely sure, but I think there's a problem with the bridging
code in Linux kernels all the way up through 2.3.8. Can anyone comment
on this? Here's my problem:

I have two hubs - a 10-Mbps one and a 100-Mbps one. Since I'm a cheap
bastard, the 100 Mbit hub is not a *10/100* hub, so I'm using a spare
machine as a bridge (and yes, I already read the Bridge mini-Howto -
btw, where can I find docs on brcfg?) between the two hubs. I was using
2.2.7 on the bridge machine until yesterday when I switched to 2.3.8. A
RealTek 8139 is the interface leading to the fast hub, and a RealTek
8029 leads to the slow hub. Additionally, I'm a Southwestern Bell ADSL
customer, and thus have an Alcatel 1000 ADSL modem plugged into the slow
hub using a crossover cable. I have 5 static IPs assigned to my various
machines, some on the slow hub and some on the fast one. The essential
fact to remember is that machines on the fast hub must first go through
the Linux bridge to reach the DSL modem, whereas the slow hub's machines
do not.

At first glance, everything seems to work fine; I can ping back and
forth between machines on opposite sides of the Linux bridge, and
everyone can ping external machines (eg, yahoo.com) as well. I am
running Apache on one of the fast ethernet machines. I can access the
webserver from any machine on the fast network as well as any slow
machine. But, I can't access the webserver from remote machines (ie,
from across both bridges). I *can* establish an ssh connection from the
outside to a fast machine, though, although the connections tend to get
reset alarmingly often. Also, I can ping/traceroute any machine in my
apartment from the outside. I discovered that I can get web access if I
switch the webserver from the fast hub to the slow one; this implies
quite strongly that the Linux bridge is screwing things up somehow.
Also, setiathome will not return results (which I think it does using
HTTP, if I'm reading the strace output correctly) from behind the Linux
bridge, although it will happily download data. I'm not currently doing
any firewalling, so that's not going to be the solution.

So, is there some reason the Linux kernel bridging code would not
interoperate smoothly with my Alcatel ADSL modem? Is there some sort of
rule against having multiple bridges on a network? Why does it seem to
be singling out http traffic for harsh treatment? Could this be a
cabling problem, like I need a crossover somewhere?

Could anyone e-mail this newbie telling him how (in laeman's terms) to get
my shiny new AT-2500TX PCI ethernet card to work under linux.

I'm trying to set up an intranet server so that I can serve web pages to
other PCs (running Win 98) on my LAN

Thanks in advance.

Stephen
