If you only want FTP and HTTP access to the internet a proxy-server
should be the best solution.
I suggest wwwoffle, if you want a fast installing proxy.
I tried to set up squid but i failed :(

Hello!
I don't know WinProxy but I can't imagine that it has something to do
with masquerading. If you wanna contact the internet with your linux box
you have two possibilitys:
1. You get two IPs from your ISP (one for each comp) and you make your
win-box the default gateway for you linux box
2. You do everything with the help of a proxy.
This is what WinProxy does (I gues). It provides a http and a ftp proxy
and it includes a mail-server (or how do you send mail with you
linux-box?). But I don't know whether there is a chance to make a
ping-proxy.

Subject: PPP Cant determine remote IP address
Date: Mon, 5 Jul 1999 20:49:02 +0100
I am having problems connecting to my ISP using PPP.
I can detect my modem, isapnp etc is all set up, when I fire up minicom, it
finds my modem immediately. I dial my ISP, this is also fine (my ISP uses
PAP, I asked), and I login. Once I log in the ppp session starts (garbage on
screen). I now quit minicom without resetting the modem and try to start
pppd on my machine, as suggested in the ppp-howto. It quits telling me that
it can't determine the remote IP address. My ISP uses dynamic IP address
allocation.
The command I run is below, along with the output, and also my
/etc/ppp/options file.
I am running rh6.0 on an i386 and ppp2.3.7
Any help would be much appreciated as this is now driving me mad !!!
Thanks,
Stuart

SuSE has his (or her?) global configuration file called /etc/rc.config.
There you find all you need. Search for DOMAINNAME and you find what
youre looking for.
(Before and after that are some more options.)
Hope that helps.

Are you sure you mean this? If your IPs stay the same, what purpose
would masquerading serve, since the outside and inside IPs would be the
same?
Or do you mean you have a private class C range, like 198.162.1.0/255?
If that's the case, you can just IP Masq the private IP range, making it
invisible to the outside world, and add IPs to the servers for the rest
of the universe. I.e. every outside server gets an official registered
DNS'ed IP, as well as an internal IP. You should be able to firewall
and masq them all with one machine.

You could do it with snmp and the correct MIB-datebases but the problem
is that several CPU-based values are not provided in a correct way under
Linux. Just a thought cause I'm actually working with that.

This sounds like your linux box has a wrong ip-address (not in the subnet of
your nt boxes) or like you have a wire problem, or you have a driver problem
(are you sure your network card is found by the kernel) or a port problem
(look in the module docu for the card if you can set the connector type
(bnc/tp/aui) or there might be an routing error on your system. It is
perhaps a good idea to run a network sniffer on one of the other boxes (look
for trinux a one-floppy linux system with important networking tools).

WINdoof98. The Novell Netware is the primary logon.
The password will be sent in upper case. The logon on Samba fileserver can be

the password crypted. There is a small file in the samba packages for upgrade

We all went through it.
For help on writting scripts, see
axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html
which shows how to write a ppp script (amongst other things)

Where are these computers located? first floor? basement? Heres
what I would do. Although now I have a room airconditioner blazing away.
When I was living at my parents house I did not so I do understand. place
the computers in the basement! if you basement is moist run a dehumidifyer.
turn the computers to slower operating speeds ie: leave turbo off. or
underclock them. overclocked CPUs get overheated much faster. Cover
any windows where sunlight gets in.. Sunlight is infared heat! You don't
want to warm up the basement. Turn off all unneeded computers. Leaave your
telephony one open though, that way the heat does not get trapped inside
the case. While you are at it. chill out with them by
working in the basement. If really are worried about the systems. shut em
all down and invest in nice two tape answering machine. This machine you
can run in the summer and the computers when the weather is more tolerable.
In my area the heat right now is 95 Degrees Farenheight! since I do
not have access to the basement, I had no choice but to move my 486 and ME
into the bedroom 24 hours a day 7 days a weeki, my bedroom has a window air
conditioner. my computer and I are both
now within our temperature tolerances. BTW the relative humidity is 90%!

Put
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate # From original RFC draft
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate # Final standard per ppp-2.3.4
into /etc/conf.modules
to handle the compression. However this will not stop ppp from working
it will just stop (useless I think since the modem already compresses)
compressions from happening.

Subject: Null modem and Linux
Date: Mon, 05 Jul 1999 20:40:37 GMT
Hi,
I currently have a Slackware Linux box connected to the 'Net via cable modem
and serving a network of Macs and Win boxes.
What I am trying to do at this point is hook up a null modem connection so
I can get one of my computers without Ethernet useful as a terminal, and
eventually used via SLIP or PPP.
I have read the FAQs and HOWTOs as well and still can't get this one going.
The cable runs between cua1 and the printer/modem port on my PowerBook. When
I use agetty, as in:
/sbin/agetty -h -L 38400 cua1 vt100
I get the login: prompt. I enter my username (non-root), and hit return. I
get the Password: prompt, enter my password, and hit return. I then get timed
out or am told I have an incorrect login (this latter the minority of the
time).
When I use Minicom on the Linux box and ProTERM on the Mac, transferring
files with ZModem works fine, but when I am just typing on each keyboard,
returns I hit on the Mac's keyboard are not registered as returns on the
Linux's Minicom window (I do get returned to the beginning of the line, but
not to a -new- line; just over the first character of the line I was typing
on when I hit return). Returns I hit on the Linux thing's keyboard -are-
registered as returns on the Mac. This, I think, is just a CR/LF problem
that doesn't explain my other problems.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Ryan
