Dan-
It sounds like you need to set up your Linux box for IP masquerading...check
out:

hello,

i try to set up an NIS server onmy SuSe6.0 with Kernel 2.2.9
but i cant figure out on how to tell the NIS server which NIS DOMAINNAME
to
use. The HOWTO didn't help me, and the only error i get when trying to
connenct
to my SERVER is
can't yp_bind: Reason: RPC failure on NIS operation

and in my messages

YPBINDPROC_DOMAIN : Domain not bound

so far i configured the IP Number for my NIS server in /etc/yp.conf
ypserver 192.168.100.1

in /var/yp i find a directory: useserv which should be the domainname
and stores all
datamaps

starting the server gives me no error, but when typing ypwhich i end up
in
the error message above
my question is :
is there something wrong with my settings , where do i tell my server
his domainname,
what to do to set up my client the correct way

thanx for every answer

I am having trouble getting on the net with Linux. It used to work right
after installation, but now the system cannot reach de DNS of my
provider. Or any other machine on the net. This is the message I get
after booting Linux (5.2):

--Can't write PID to "var/lock/news/shlock481". No space left on device.

--cat: /var/lock/news/LOCK.innwatch: No such fiel or directory.

At shutdown I get:

--innwatch: [474] locked bij []

Can someone help me out on this problem.
Thanks a lot.

hi

i have two linux boxes, 10baset-connected. one of them runs apache/SSL
(let's call this host apa). the same machine is my
internet-dialup-machine. i use pppd in demand-mode to open the
connections dynamic. this all works fine. BUT... on my client-box, the
default home-page is https://apa/. so, i open netscape, and then it
hangs, connects to the internet and loads then the page... this makes no
sense to me... i don't wan't to dialup just for checking my
intranet-server... resolv.conf is hosts, bind on both machines. apa is
in every hosts file...

any ideas ??? TIA

I think? I understand the various domains levels. But when trying to set
up a third level domain I don't understand why I cannot put "www" before
"yourname.mydomain.com.au" in the URL. That is when I type in
"yourname.mydomain.com.au" I get the correct index page, when I type in
"www.yourname.mydomain.com.au" I get "cannot find server or DNS error" in
the browser. I have submitted "www", "mail" and "yourname" as hosts to my
primary nameserver (provided by my ISP)(should I set up my own
nameservers?).

I am sharing an IP number with "www.mydomain.com.au", my entry in
httpd.conf (apache-mod_ssl 1.3.6.2.3.2-0)is:-

NameVirtualHost xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

I have spent a few days going through as many How Tos, mans and generally
searching far and wide for an answer but to no avail! I have a feeling
it's going to be another one of those simple answers - maybe I can't see
the wood because of the trees in the way!

I'm getting a great kick out of seeing results from my efforts with Linux
- at the time I thought setting up RedHat 5.2 out of the box was too easy!
a couple of weeks later I realised there was a bit more to this Linux and
nearly gave up, many weeks later I'm through the worst and loving the
little critter!

Thanks All!

I found out that the situation is explaind in Proxy-ARP mini HOWTO. The
problem is also explained in RFC1027. I checked

arp -i eth0 -Ds <host B IP adddress> eth0 pub

The only problem is that if the gateway has this address in its cache,
it still tries to respond to the old hardware address. I used hunt
program (ftp://ftp.cri.cz/pub/linux/hunt) which among other features has
ARP-spoofing so I spoofed the gateway cache inserting host A hardware
address corresponding to the host B IP address. Then it worked fine.
Probably there is no need for spoofing if you have time to wait when the
cache expires.
When I added proxy ARP at the eth1 interface, it also solved
(completely, I hope) the problem in my original posting.

I had this problem and fixed it by putting X3 in the modem string. I put it
toward the end of the string. I had to do this in both Windows and in the
dialing script. Now I tried taking it out on the Windows string and it dials
fine. I really don't know what it does, but it was given as an answer on a
modem newsgroup. I tried it and it worked for me. Actually the answer given
there was a one line answer.

atx3. So I put it the X3 in my string.

I have been working with Slackware, and I configured it so I can
access it via FTP. Real users access ftp services like guest, so they see
their dirs like root.

I am trying to configure the same option in a RedHat 6.0 box. It
works, but I can 'ls' files. I have added bin and etc directory. ls in bin,
passwd and group in etc.

Configuration is the same that in my Slackware box. Where is the
problem?

        Can you help me?

nslookup just gives you the name and domain. I believe you're looking
for 'whois' for full lookups.

Put this in your /etc/rc.d/rc.local for masquerading. Change the IP
address range to suit your LAN.

/sbin/ipchains -M -S 7200 10 60
/sbin/ipchains -P forward DENY
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -s xxx.xxx.xxx.0/24 -j MASQ

Do yourself a favor and read the ipchains HOW-TO and the man page.

Just a note about using defaultroute as a pppd. The manual for diald states:

WARNING: Note that some pppd commands should not be specified, not even in
the /etc/ppp/options file, because they will interfere with the proper operation
of diald. In particular you should not specify the tty device, the rate nor any
of the options crtscts, xonxoff, -crtscts, defaultroute,... Use the equivalent
diald commands to control these pppd settings.

I am a neophyte myself and was wondering if you have used that pppd setting
(defaultroute) successfully.
