This is a problem with pppd and demand dialing. You can't specify 0.0.0.0
as a local address when using the demand option, and specifying it is the
standard way of asking the peer (ISP) to offer a local address for you
to use. When the ISP behaves foolishly and accepts the local address
you suggest then you have this trouble. The problem recently appeared
in the linux-ppp list ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) .

You can try using an address on the network that the remote addresses
belong to. It would be a foolish ISP indeed that let that happen.
It might just terminate the connection though, instead of providing a
proper local address for you. It also might be really foolish.

Anyone out there have this set up in working order?

A Windows machine running the SyGate firewall software and an internal
host running Linux.

I've been having a problem with external access to my network that has
been driving me crazy for over a month!

>From inside my network, I can access all of the resources that are
available from my Linux box. However, some external hosts are not
able to do so.

In particular, I'm trying to get FTP working so external clients can
access it. I've tried everything under the sun: different hosts.allow
configurations, placing the FTP clients in PASSIVE mode, access via a
web browser, different kinds of FTP clients, etc, etc, and the result
is always the same:

The box lets the users log in and sends them the banners, login
messages, etc, which the external hosts get. However, when the FTP
client issues the first post-login command after PORT (usually a LIST
or NLIST command), the session hangs up, and the client gets nothing.
This happens even when the first post-login command is PASSIVE.

The logs don't say anything and, as far as the Linux box is concerned,
the client got the information!

This seems to be happening with web access as well. The external host
gets the first page of the site, but it can't get any of the links on
it.

To top all of this, some clients are actually able to get through
without problems!!!

I'm going insane with this crap! Can anyone help me with this?

Hi all,

I mistakenly purchsed a four-port Adaptec NIC thinking it was one of the
old one's that
used the Tulip chipset so as to be compatible with Linux. It is an
Adaptec ANA-62044
and the chipset that appears to be being used is AIC-6915P. Does anyone
know if there
is support for this somewhere or at least if someone is working on a
driver?

Many thanx in advance,

I have had no problems getting dual 3COM 3c509B ISA NIC's working on an
older PC(486DX4)under RH5.0. I am setting up a second newer system with
RH6.0(also with dual 3COM 3c509B ISA NIC's) but have'nt spent enough
time on it yet.

One thing I did have to do to get it working on the first PC was disable
PNP mode under DOS using the set-up utility provided with the card. This
is well documented in the HOWTO's. Since the 3C509B is a tier one
supported card I would be very surprised if it did not work with RH6.0.

E-mail if your interested in the results on my second PC.

"browsable = no"in the [globals] sections
seems to set the default behavior for the
shares, not the server itself.

To get the server from showing up in browse
list, I need to keep nmbd from making periodic
announcements about itself. (I still would like
to run it, because I want the host to register
with the wins server, and respond to requests
from other hosts.)

Looking at the source, the only thing I have
been able to do so far that works is to return
immediately from
"void announce_my_server_names(time_t t)"
in nmbd_sendannounce.c. As far as I can
tell this is not gated by a flag, although
the description of "browse list = No" seemed
promising.

Anyway, thank you for your ideas!

    Best regards,
    Mike

The fcs errors are often speed related as you noted. Some problems of
this kind are hard to solve but basically somewhere there is a speed
bottleneck that can't take 115200 without choking.

Try the pppd option "asyncmap 0" or look in the log of the LCP link
negotiation messages to find what asyncmap the peer is using and try it.

Try resetting the modem with a factory standard in the chat script before
dialing.

I've seen one case in which the modem compression algorithm *seemed*
to be flawed and expanded highly compressed incoming data too fast for
the rest of the data path to handle.

The fcs errors can also result from extraneous data getting into the
data path but this doesn't seem to apply here.

BTW you may need a better UART than a 16550A when you get the full 128k
ISDN going. I don't know what the UARTs for the Cyber board are though,
maybe they _are_ better.

I'm a newbie myself, but I managed to get pppd connections. My problem is that
most of the times the connection drops after 10-15 seconds. If I try many times
it will eventually stay up... (does anyone have an idea why?)

It would help if you can login to your ISP using something like Minicom so that
you can actually see what your ISP expects from you.
For example, a connection to my ISP using Minicom looks like this:

login:<username>
Password:<mypass>

Protocol:ppp

So, in my case I must also supply the 'ppp' string in the chatscript for the
login to be accepted.
It looks something like this:
AT OK ATD9999999999 CONNECT 'ogin:user assword:pass rotocol:\dppp

You might also have extra work if your ISP requires PAP authentication. I
remember I had to edit a file for this to work (forgot which one though... does
anyone know more about this?)

Hope you get it to work.

Cheers

Daniel

Hello all,

Suppose you have a lan connected to the internet via hdsl and a cisco

How can I build a packet filtering firewall in between the cisco router
and the main hub while still preserving the computers IP address on the
lan? I do not know how the linux box with multiple ethernet cards would
know how to route packets if both nics have the same network address.

I do not want to use 192.168.xxx.xxx, I have several computers on the
lan that I want to have real network numbers and direct connectivity on
some ports. A simple linux box forwarding some packets, denying others
is all the security I want.

Any suggestions on how this can be done while preserving my lans
address' would be greatly appreciated.

Try

You don't need a domainname for getting email, you'll need
a FQDN with a registered IP address (that is, a hostname
with an officially assigned IP address which can be resolved
via DNS). Do you have a static IP address ? If so, the ISP
who assigned it to you will do the needed DNS entries for
you. If you don't have a static IP address, you'll need
to get the email forwarded to your machine via your company's
email server.

There's no need for using the router at all; moreover, the router might
even make this setup impossible if it doesn't support NAT. Sell it, setup
your Linux box as router and firewall, and recompile the kernel with
support for IP masquerading. With 2.2.* kernels you'll need ipchains,
with older versions ipfwadm .

Subject: ipchain and logging?

Hello,

If I use ipchains and use the -l option for logging, where are the
matches printed? I can't find them in any log that I can find. Am I
missing something?

Thanks in advance
