I agree that the other products use a window to display the xsession which is a bit
of a drag. However check out
vnc - it is free. Also I was unable to get the other products to work with applix,
vnc does without a hitch. I can
not afford the $200.00 per seat xwin wants.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hey, I recently got my linux box up, and am running it as a proxy server
for my house. It works fine with Netscape (from my 95 machine) and
general apps. I am using Socks5 for my server, and Aventail AUTOsocks
for my "transperent" client. The one problem I have, is that I can not
play games! I don't have a firewall up, so thats not the problem. Anyone
else have this problem? Are there other transperent proxy softwares
that I could use? If I can't play games... are there any other descent
proxy packages I could use? I have a few 95 machines, and a NT4 machine
on my network.
Thanks,
Barton

How can the entire traffic of a linux-webserver be recorded?
That should happen for each single user.
It leisures also accesses of outsides is considered.
Each access over HTTP, FTP, POP, SMTP should become grasp. (in and out)

Maybe. The network traffic may be cause for suspicion. The disk

smbmount doesn't work with 2.1.xxx kernels.
You must upgrade to samba-2.0.0beta5 (or more) and compile it against
2.1.xxx
headers.
So you must do a :
./configure --with-smbmount
make
and it will produce appropriate the smbmount, smbmnt etc. files.
Then, smbmount "\\SERVNAME\name_of_share" -c "mount /mnt/smbfs" (or
whatever)
I myself made an rpm out of samba-2.0.0beta5 in order to have the files
put in the proper places (insted of /usr/local). If you need help on that please let
me know.

I installed RedHat 5.0 on an 80 mb hard drive, just so I can run a simple
server to run e-mail, telnet, ftp, etc. Simple stuff. I chucked out as
much stuff as possible and it all fit. Except for some reason, ftp doesn't
work. I must have missed it in the install somewhere. I looked and there's
/usr/sbin/in.telnetd and /usr/sbin/in.fingerd, BUT there's no
/usr/sbin/in.ftpd. I assume that's why ftp doesn't work. (ftp to this
machine, ftp out works fine) Where can I find in.ftpd so I can install
that on it's own, rather than going through the install again? I had to
remove my cd-rom drive to add another hard drive for the /home filesystem,
so I don't have a cd-rom to use anymore! What and where do I install what
to get ftp to work?

I just got my RedHat 5.2 package in the mail today, and am very eager
to set it up. I'm going to buy a HD for it in the morning, and could
install it any time after that. However, I eventually want to turn
this computer into a web server. It doesnt have a NIC right now, and
it would be a while before I could get one. Would it make much of a
difference in terms of installation of the NIC whether i:
1. install linux now, get the card in a few months, and install the
card and necessary drivers later -or-
2. wait a few months, read up a lot on Linux, get the NIC, install and
configure it in Win95 to make sure it's ok, then install Linux
I'm totally new to both networking and linux, but was told that if i
go to caltech in the fall, i'll need to know Unix/Linux, so I'm
finally making the leap i've longed to for so long.
Also, if there are any other tips you could give me, or any good books
you could recommend, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks a lot.

Also,
Ahnung hat hier wohl keiner, oder?
Hier nochmal fr Interessierte und ernste Newsgroupleser meine Frage!! (die
Adressen sind logischerweise nicht richtig, sondern gendert!!)
Hallo,
ich habe eine analoge Standleitung, an beiden Seiten ein US Robotics Modem
und Linux (SuSE 6.0).
Vom Provider habe ich folgende Angaben:
Init-String: at&f1&l1s32=6&w
IP-Subnet: 111.111.111.128/29 (8er Subnet, 6 nutzbare IP-Adressen)
Netzmaske: 255.255.255.248
Adresse fr PPP-Interface: 222.222.222.210
Providerseite: 333.333.333.333
brigens was heit: 8er Subnet, 6 nutzbare IP-Adressen?
Vielen Dank im Voraus!

Please pardon me if my post is irrelevant.
I have WinProxy1.4 (www.winproxy.net) running on Win98 box with
MultilinkPPP enabled (~100kbps to the Internet for cheap price!).
And I have two other client machines (one Linux, one Win98).
They are running very happily. I can telnet, ftp, use Netscape=20
from my Linux and Win98 clients to the outside world (but no ping). =20
I followed the manual that came with WinProxy1.4 to set things up.
Maybe, you could explain what you have tried so far, so that someone
here or I can provide some help.

Subject: named.boot & hosts files - are these correct use of
Date: Sat, 9 Jan 1999 19:32:01 +0000
Hi All,
I am afraid I am completely confused:-( and by the look of other people
this is not just me.
All I am wanting to do is have my win98 ethernet TCP use the linux box
for dns lookup, so I set the dns entry for this interface to 10.0.1.252
which is the IP address of the linux box known as jilldando. The win98
DUN TCP interface is not involved since this is setup when I connect to
the internet and is working fine.
I have made sure there are NO hosts & lmhosts files on win98
So know I just need to configure jilldando
The confusion is what to edit for my purposes.
I am wanting to be able to type the following URL's / telnet entries on
my win98 box and have jilldando resolve the names to IP address's so
that the win98 box knows where to get/logon to, in my case usually some
service on jilldando:-
http://www.shadow.home --> 10.0.1.252
http://www.worsdall.home --> 10.0.1.252
http://www.hinwick.home --> 10.0.1.252
http://www.shadow.win98 --> 10.0.1.250
http://www.worsdall.win98 --> 10.0.1.250
http://www.hinwick.win98 --> 10.0.1.250
and for telnet
jilldando --> 10.0.1.252
linux --> 10.0.1.252
jilldando.linux --> 10.0.1.252
So the setup is?:-
/etc/HOSTNAME
jilldando.linux
Now this is the hostname of the linux box and I am OK here.
/etc/host.conf
order hosts, bind
multi on
This means when you get a name request, first look in the hosts file, if
linux box cannot resolve the name to an IP address then use the DNS
service named, is this correct?
/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
10.0.1.252 jilldando jilldando.linux
10.0.1.250 win98 worsdall.demon.co.uk
So the linux box gets a request to resolve "jilldando" from win98, is
looks in the hosts file and see's 10.0.1.252 is jilldando and pass's
this IP address back to the win98 machine.
If the linux box gets a request to resolve "www.hinwick.home" from
win98, is looks in the hosts file and cannot find an IP address that
matches the request, so the linux machine (jilldando) will know pass the
request onto the dns service.
Now I am lost:-( what files do we need to sort out? so far I think I
must edit the following files:-
/etc/named.boot
/etc/aliases
/var/named/?????.????
So the DNS service uses:-
/etc/named.boot
;
; a caching only nameserver config
;
directory /var/named
cache . named.ca
primary 0.0.127.in-addr.arpa named.local
which tells named to look in /var/named for the files named.ca and
named.local (these are the only files I have in this directory) I do not
have a file called /var/named/in-addr.arpa and have no idea what it
should contain if it should exist.
So next I though I should logically have some entry in /etc/named.boot
for jilldando IP address's and win98 but what do I put instead of
primary? Would the following 2 lines work? Is secondary correct?
secondary 10.0.1.win98.arpa win98.rev.arpa
secondary 10.0.1.linux.arpa linux.rev.arpa
or should I use CNAME:-
CNAME 10.0.1.win98.arpa win98.rev.arpa
CNAME 10.0.1.linux.arpa linux.rev.arpa
So assuming something above is right:-) I need to create 4 files for the
2 machines?
/var/named/win98.arpa
/var/named/win98.rev.arpa
/var/named/linux.arpa
/var/named/linux.rev.arpa
but I have no idea what or where or how to put anything inside these
files for my purposes, I treid looking and decyphereing what named.local
had in it but to no avail.
/var/named/named.local
@ IN SOA localhost. root.localhost. (

28800 ; Refresh
14400 ; Retry
3600000 ; Expire
86400 ) ; Minimum
IN NS localhost.
1 IN PTR localhost.
Would this work for 10.0.1.252?
/var/named/linux.rev.arpa
@ IN SOA jilldando. root.jilldando. www.shadow.home.
www.worsdall.home. www.hinwick.home. (

28800 ; Refresh
14400 ; Retry
3600000 ; Expire
86400 ) ; Minimum
IN NS jilldando.
1 IN PTR jilldando.
See how lost I am? :-)
How can you even help I am thinking? Maybe with example files for
/var/named/??????.????.????
Mark.

I use XWin32 on NT at work to connect to Solaris Sparc machines. I

mail me at work, and maybe I can help.

Subject: Proxy on Proxy
Date: Sat, 9 Jan 1999 16:23:38 +0800
Hi all,
In the department I am working, there is a PC which can go to internet
through setting proxy in the browser. The IP address of the PC is registered
in the company in order to access the proxy, so that other desktop PC (like
mine) can't go to internet in the same way.
I recently installed RH 5.2 to that PC. I want to install proxy server S/W
on that PC so that our desktop PCs can all go out to internet through that
PC. Can anyone suggest what S/W is needed (and the settings involved) to
allow that RH5.2 box in one way to act as proxy server, and on the other
hand to go to internet through proxy ?
Thanks,
wkchiu

Subject: Need driver for Netgear FA310TX NIC

Netgear has a nice little starter kit for about
$85.00 at CompUSA. Has anyone used this for RedHat 5.2?
It uses FA310TX NIC cards.
Does anyone have a better suggestion? I want to run Linux
on one box, and let my wife run NT on the other box ( which
also has a removable disk so that I can sometimes run Linux
on it too).
Happy New Year to all.
Thanks,
Art Mollet
