Well, I am not sure what exactly the problem is, but I can replicate this
exact phenomenon with a different program. I use FileRunner (ver 2.5) a
lot and it has a useful function when you double click on an image file -
it will start up xv and display the image. However, when you then quit xv,
it will leave a zombie process, which cannot be killed even with -9 or as
root:

[wolf@ares wolf]$ ps aux |grep zomb
wolf 2092 9.0 0.0 0 0 ? Z 16:49 0:03 (xv <zombie>)
[wolf@ares wolf]$ kill -9 2092
[wolf@ares wolf]$ ps aux |grep zomb
wolf 2092 4.2 0.0 0 0 ? Z 16:49 0:03 (xv <zombie>)
[wolf@ares wolf]$ su
...
[root@ares wolf]# kill -9 2092
[root@ares wolf]# ps aux |grep zomb
wolf 2092 1.7 0.0 0 0 ? Z 16:49 0:03 (xv <zombie>)

The only way I can get rid of that zombie process is to shut down
FileRunner. So in other words, I have to kill the parent process.

You don't. Let me draw you a picture.

US Civil War ~600,000 killed > US WWII ~300,000

Is either figure greater than the population of England, Scotland and
Wales? I don't think so...

Let's look, shall we?
<url:http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/uk.html>

        Population: 58,970,119 (July 1998 est.)

        Age structure:
        0-14 years: 19% (male 5,832,086; female 5,530,679)
        15-64 years: 65% (male 19,304,762; female 19,032,024)
        65 years and over: 16% (male 3,807,710; female 5,462,858)

Just taking the population alive a year ago that was 5 or older before
1939, we see that the population was at *least* 9.2 million, and
probably significantly larger.

What part of 9.2 million >> 300,000 are you having difficulty
understanding? Your statement doesn't stand up to scrutiny very
well.

After hastling with pppd, kppp, and finally getting non-root users the
ability to dial out, now Netscape 6.1 doesn't see the connection.
I dial out, make the connection with my ISP, click on netscape and get an
error message like I'm not connected.
Anyone know anything about this?-|

All help will be greatly appreciated.

RedHat 5.2 on generic Intel box.

The NIS startup scripts in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d are as follows:

S13ypbind@ S65ypserv@ S66yppasswdd@

Question: Shouldn't ypserv be started before ypbind?

/etc/yp.conf:
ypserver localhost

ypbind fails to bind because it can't contact the server. Even if I let
the system sit for several minutes after ypserv starts, ypbind never
binds.

If I restart ypbind, it then binds fine.

Does anyone else out there expect their NIS server to also run ypbind.
The Solaris machines I've worked on in the past all started ypserv first
and then ypbind.

Thanks,
Owen Beckley

Have you entered your password for the linux server with
smbpasswd AND passwd. Are the password used with these programs
are the same?

I have a Linux server and a Novell server, the clients are runnig with
WINdoof98. The Novell Netware is the primary logon.

The password will be sent in upper case. The logon on Samba fileserver can
be
diffrent from the Win client. Win 95 sent the password no crypted, Win 98
sent
the password crypted. There is a small file in the samba packages for
upgrade
your Registry on Win..

An easy tool to administer the Server ist Webmin "http://www.webmin.com"

Make sure you have "order host, bind" in your /etc/host.conf. If that
doesn't work post your /etc/resolv.conf.

I've been trying to set-up a network at the
office, and I've encountered a problem.

I have about 8 PCs with Win98 connected through a
hub to the Linux RH5.2 Server. The server dials
out to the ISP and invokes firewall rules
(ipfwadm) to masquerade the PCs to the outside.

It was working fine (I could send mail and browse
the web with little difficulty), then I set up
Fetchmail.

After I set up Fetchmail to grab my email out of
a virtual pop and distribute it on my server, the
PCs could no longer go out onto the web (nor
could they get anywhere beyond mt server or
themselves internally).

Is there something in Fetchmail or in Sendmail
that could be causing this? Or is it a problem
being caused by something else that isn't
apparent?

Thanks,
David

What Linux and atheism have in common, that which their
advocates most energetically embrace and their detractors
most vociferously vilify, is that they both encourage
an independent view of the world.

A little more information might be in order here.

        - What "server" did give to Netscape?
        - What's in your /etc/resolv.conf file?

In Netscape, you probably just told it that "mail" is your mail server, like
the @Home guy set up for you in Windows. But, you're forgetting the other
stuff that he set up for you, such as your domain name and/or domain search
list.

Here is my /etc/resolv.conf - does yours look like this:

        search wodhvn1.mi.home.com fuller.local
        nameserver 127.0.0.1
        nameserver 24.2.252.33
        nameserver 24.2.252.34

If you don't have a "domain" or "search" keyword in your file, then you need
to go back to Windows, get your domain name and put it in your
/etc/resolv.conf

I dont know if this is the same situation for u but i am using home on a 3

that they suggested doesnt work for me so i asked them for the FQDN of their
mailserver wich is mail.stcl1.mi.home.com...that address appears on yer info
sheet u got when u got home except for the mail part, just add that to the
left. Dont know if that will solve yer prob or not but good luck

I am having the same problem. For now i gave up on it, because the chances
of the IP changing are very rare so i just set my config manually. In case
u dont already know all dhcpcd does is contact a dhcp server from yer cable
isp to get yer IP address and routing info. Its done that way so if it ever
changes of course it will auto update, but its not like PPP where it changes
every time. Ive been on for a few months now and no change. Im pretty sure
the problem is that i need to add some arguments to the dhcpcd command like
my hostname, the IP of the dhcp server trying to contact, etc. I havent put
much into getting it working yet though. What u can do is put back yer old
rc.inet1 replace yer IPADDR, NETMASK, etc with yer assigned values from yer
cable ISP and put yer name server IP # in /etc/resolv.conf and u will be up
and running. You can get that info off of yer info sheet u got with yer
service, call them, or if u use windows and its working then run the
prograam \windows\winipcfg.exe and it will give u all the info u need. If
one day u startup and have no access then go back to win and run winipcfg
again and u will see the IP prolly changed, and make the necessary
adjustments to rc.inet1. By the way if u do get dhcpcd to work and @home is
the cable service u use then let me know:)

I would mostly agree with George's reply - we don't have enough info -

however - most distributions of linux are pretty good/ and close in
features -

choose 1 of: caldera, mandrake, or suse - i believe these all use the
2.2.x kernel

this should be a pretty good general solution to any of your problems.

I have a W95 box networked to a Linux (RH 5.2) box using SAMBA. I am able to
access the W95 box perfectly from the Linux box.

I would like to be able to access the Linux box from the W95 box using
Network Neighbourhood and Explorer. (I had this setup working prior to
reloading Linux).

In N'work N'hood, Linux box shows up being present.

Double clicking the Linux box gives the following message:

\\Rloc is not accessible
The specified computer did not receive your request. Try again later.

As far as I can tell my Linux configuration files and W95 network setup are
the same as they were priot to reloading Linux and i am therefore not sure
where to look for the answer to this one.

Thanks for the help

So it is possible for two win95 networks joined by a linux/ppp link to
