The first address will be 209.53.239.240, not 209.53.239.239. Also,
you'll 14 usable addresses. Address 209.53.239.240 is the "network"
and  209.53.239.255 is the broadcast.

The logical AND of the subnet mask and IP address always shows the
lowest address in the range. The rightmost block of "0" bits in the
mask determine the number available addresses. The lowest is
considered the network and the highest is the broadcast. Neither is
usable by a host or router.

>209.53.151.238 to 209.53.151.110
>128 addresses; subnet mask 255.255.255.128

With that mask, your allowable range is 209.53.239.0 to
209.53.239.127 or 209.53.239.128 - 209.53.239.255
>
>209.53.151.109 to 209.53.151.45
>64 addresses; subnet mask 255.255.255.192

Allowable range 209.53.239.0 - 209.53.239.63 or 209.53.239.64 -
209.53.239.127

>

Pick 209.53.239.16 209.53.239.31 or 209.53.239.32 -209.53.239.47

I think you'd better review your subnetting lessons. It would appear
you are trying to creating a range of address based on some arbitrary
low end. You may be able to do what you want, with a lot of
"creative" masking, but if so, it would be more trouble than it's
worth.

I have successfully connected my PowerPC to my Linux box through the
serial port using a null modem cable and a communication sofware called
Kermit. The problem is that the Mac is restrained to a sort of dumb
terminal...
What I would like to do now is to create a TCP/IP connection between the
two without installing AppleTalk on Linux.
I have heard that I could set up a PPP connection.
Does someone know how to do this ? Are there resources on-line for this
?

Thanks,

The word is 'smbmount' and the word can be quite annoying to use. Have a look
at section 4.14. on my web-page (below) for some more on this. The REAL SLOW
bit is dealt with in 4.8. but may still be a problem with smbmount, I will have
to get round to testing there again.

First, it's a matter of Perl. You forgot
  use FileHandle;
  autoflush STDOUT 1;
  autoflush STDERR 1;
or the correspinding select statements.

Then, it's a matter of the web browser. Lynx seems to buffer,
Netscape won't.

Because there's no way to find out the IP address if you're not running
a local DNS server. Add your host names to both /etc/hosts and
C:\windows\hosts (there's an example hosts.sam file).

See above. The Linux telnet daemon tries to resolve the incoming IP
connection, and eventually times out.

Because root logins via telnet are per default disabled. Create another
user account on the Linux box instead.

I have a cgi program that will execute for a long
period of time, and it will also output information
periodically. But I found that all output will be bufferred
by the webserver (apache 1.3) until the cgi finish.
For example, with the following script,

print "HTTP/1.0 200 OK\n",
      "Content-type: text/html\n\n";

print "Hello, this is a cgi test<P>";
print "My environment<P>\n";
foreach (keys %ENV) {
  sleep(5);
  print "$_=$ENV{$_}<BR>\n";
}

I hope that I can get a line shown every 5 seconds.
How should I do? Is it the matter of web server or web browser?
thanks.

If you haven't done so yet, grab the pump rpm from updates.redhat.com or
your friendly mirror. While I was on a LAN at college, eth0 would fail to
initialize using the pump package that came with RH6, but the update fixed
whatever was broken.

Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 10:17:46 GMT

I am writing to you through my now functioning masquerading Linux-driven
Mac II. I am using dhclient, as I never could get dhcpcd to work. My
server is providing a dns caching-only server; and the performance is
not that bad. I have been able to drive three machines browsing and
downloading simultaneously. There @s really only two things I want to
address further:

1. Sometimes I get http errors when hitting some sites, or get "not
found" errors (usually both are corrected by reloading). Often this
occurs on the @Home page (Java generated). Does anyone have any idea how
I can prevent this?

2. The second issue is improving on browsing speed. Performance is not
bad, but I would like to be optimal. Squid's web caching sounds like a
good idea; but the last time I tried to install squid, it caused serious
numerous errors (I am running Debian 2.1). I would like to know, before
I try it again, that there is somethifg worthwhile in doing so.
Particularly, on such a slow machine, will it provide adequate caching
to provide something of a boost to web-browsing?

On a similar note, what does tproxyd do?

Nor is it even possible to connect two networks without a router.
Consider: If it were possible, that means at least one machine on the
network is directly [ie not through an intervening host or router]
connected to both networks. But then, by definition that machine _is_ a
router, connected to both networks. Hence it's not possible.

I think what the original poster meant was how he could connect two
networks without *a* *device* *commercially* *known* *as* "a router".
Confusion such as this is why I prefer to call the above type of servers
"gateways", to use the original term. While "gateway" and "router" are
traditionally meant to be synonymous, using one to refer to a "generic"
server running routing software and the other to custom boxes usually
involving some type of firmware [as in what Cisco makes].

In a vague attempt to give credit where due, I must point out that I
didn't come up with the above suggested terminology. I can't recall
where I heard or read the suggested "gateway/router" [re-]definitions,
but I do know it wasn't an original thought of mine :). It was probably
one O'Reilly book or another, or a particular RFC, but as I can't recall
an exact reference on my own, it would be greatly appreciated if
somebody else recognized it and let me know the source.

> but it works.

Since it's not possible any other way, it'd better work! :)

I am digging in to this tcp/ip implementation on Linux.

How much traffic Linux is able to route between two interfaces ? How
to calculate that? I would think it can saturate 100MB eth without
problems.

How many interfaces people are able to fit on one box. I have been
looking for multiport ethernet cards. Which are good ones? Has anyone
set up a Linux box with 12 or more ports?

How to estimate the total bandwith Linux on certain hardware is able
to sustain for example on 4 interfaces?

How good really is the Linux tcp/ip stack? What problems in it?

The first few lines talk about kernels with ethertap support and
the difference between compiling in and using a module. The file
doesn't tell you how get modprobe to be quiet about missing tap
devices because the whole point is to explain how to use the new
ethertap support. Ok, it isn't a HOW-TO but then it isn't supposed
to be :-).

each of the groups he spammed that I subscribe to. And I'm not done
