hi everybody,
who can tell me what i have to do to make a ppp connection
between a linux-pc and a non-ethernet mac via serial line?
now what i exactly want to do is use the linux-box as a server
and router for the mac so that i can access the internet on my
mac but use the cheap isdn-hardware in the pc. i have tried to
make a connection using kermit on the pc and the mac, but that
is not what i need, because kermit occupies the mac's serial
port and no other application can use it anymore. so if anyone
has ever tried something like this, please tell me what to do.
thanks,
ali

We have to ask ourselves what is the role of support from the various distributers.
This wasn't a Red Hat problem. Does RH or SuSE, or anyone else have a responsibility
for *all* the software in the entire system? Does their responsibility go beyond
ensuring that that packages are complete and that they are loaded correctly?
I suspect that if you ask a question that is not specific to their distribution
you may never get an answer, and even if the question is valid there may be a
mandatory delay of several days to let you find the answer yourself.

Unless, of course you use the new ibm pci driver :)

What distribution are you using ?
read /var/log/messages in rh 5.2
and check the boot up messages for the loading of it, if its not there
then you need to compile the new kernel.

Try looking at /etc/services.
Chances are that the port assigned to ftp is commented out.Port 21 I
believe.

Well, I'm sure that's ok, because I can't even read/write to a user's
homedir (logged in as that user). ProFTPd keeps on saying 'permission
denied'. Everything else on the system works fine, so the problem is not
with wrong file permissions.

and it can easily make it without sending dummy data at the begining.
I don't know why...

Subject: Prestige Router and old packages...
Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 11:59:37 GMT
Hello All
I have a major problem with my linux-setup. In short I access the
internet via a Zyxel Prestige Router (100IH) connected to my network
card. It connect to a standard PPP-connection and therefor I get a new
IP-number every time I connect. My problem is that it seems that Linux
"keep" some open connections even when the Router has disconnected
after the preset timeout (30 sec.). When I use "netstat -n" I can see
some connections (always port 80 or 8080, www/proxy), and it seems
that these connections provoke the router to connect again. But as I
get a different IP-number this time the connections never properly
closes.
Is there any solution? Or anyway i can "flush" the remaining
connections?
I run Mandrake 6.0 and do not masquerade or anyting...
Best regards

Subject: windows 95 client on a linux server
Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 12:32:47 GMT
I have installed Redhat 5.2 - linux kernel 2.0.36 on a computer. It has
a NE2000 compatible (Compex RL2000 PCI) ethernet card. I have configured
the card as eth0 and ifconfig command recognizes the card. I have also
installed NIS and NFS on the system. I am trying to connect a windows 95
system with the same NE 2000 ethernet card as a client to the linux
machine. I have not been able to do this. If I connect the windows
machine to other windows machines it pings and establishes connection.
I have set the gateway of the windows machine to the IP address of the
linux server and the DNS entries to that of the Linux server which is
192.168.41.1 with a netmasking of 255.255.255.0
Please advice me as to how to go about further.
The linux server telnets and ftps to itself.
Thanks

I have the problen, that pppd (demand is enabled) connects when I want so
send an e-mail .
That would be quite good, but I disabled the automatical sending, so that I
should have to start the sending by sendmail -q.
Another interesting thing is:
When pppd is on, the clients wait until the connection is established - then
they send the files to my server.
When pppd is off, the clients will send it at once.
I have Suse 6.1, the pppd 2.3.5 and the sendmail-update from suse.
What can be wrong?
Thanks

It isn't in /usr/sbin on my system; only smbd is there. Still looking.
(I did a workstation install, then rpm -i [samba]).

If you are using 2.5.x, I'm goint to make a wild assumption that you
are using RH 6.0
before you go to all that trouble though, try the following lines and
see if they work or error out.
ipchain -P forward DENY # this clears the board so to speak
ipchain -A forward -i ppp0 -j MASQ # masks your modem
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward # starts packet forwarding
insmod ip_masq_ftp # sets up ftp masq yep you need that to ftp
if those don't errorout with 'can't find files' you're in like Flynn
First dump your kernel completely if it is older than 2.2.10
then merely select those things that pertain to networking and
firewalls etc. Its not hard even for new users, these things are
fairly obvious, especially so if you do the make configmenu (?)

Correct: it is a wild assumption. I'm actually using Caldera Open
Linux (sort of...). When I tried typing the above lines, I get a
wonderful little error that reads this way:
ipchains: Protocol not available.

Ok..I figure out: I'm using shadow passwords on my system so the Qpopper
should be configured for that:
1. type ./configure --enable-specialauth
2. then the usual "make"

arp -a
gives you a lot of information
then:
arp -d machineA
to murder the duplicate
and:
arp -s machineA m:a:c:a:d:d:r
to force the one you want, to be known as machineA
