I had problems using dhcpcd that came with RH, but I upgraded to the latest
version (1.3 or so) and my problems were resolved.
The network scripts are in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts directory.
ifcfg-eth0 and ifup script.
also I think the setup are in /etc/conf.modules for the kernel.

Hello All,
I'm new to this newsgroup and am truly impressed at the levels of discussion
here.
We are running RH 6.0 here as our DNS, mailserver, file server, and ftp
server. It has performed superbly as compared to its resource consumptive NT
network partners, but has a seeming limitation I hope someone can help with.
In NT, I can simply shut off access to all the
heyports I don't use. For example, the webserver only has port 80 open and
only allows TCP/IP protocol 6, TCP/IP. A Retina scan of my Linux box shows
about 14 ports open, 9 of which I would rather not have open. How does one
control these ports? For example, port 1024 OLD_FINGER is listed as open. I
do not want to retain that as an open port. How would you go about closing
that port.
The basic idea here is to make this machine as secure as I can, so if some
other network security primer on Linux is in order, that would be sincerely
appreciated as well. Looking forward to the posts found here.

I just set up a e-smith gateway, which is based on RedHat 5.2, using the linksys
10/100 cards. There are two versions of the card. The older card has three chips
on it and the newer one has one chip on it. The drivers failed with the new one
and
work with the old card. Linksys has the source for a 'beta test' driver on their
web
site. I have downloaded it, but have not worked with it since I have enough of
the
old style cards. Will place the new ones in the windows systems. Hope this
helps.

Winmodem is not a win modem but a lost modem in Linux. You have to
change you modem anyway.

Hi, there,
I am using RHL 6.0 at home. I use ppp to dial up to Internet. It works
well.
My question is how to automatically send email to my friend each time
after I fire up ppp to tell him my dynamic IP address?

Hello,
We are trying to set up a small isp for our employees, we have purchased
RedHat6 and a cyclades card. After installing and configuring mgetty and the
cyclades drivers we are not able to sucessfully configure autoppp. The
modems are working correctly as we are able to use hyperterminal and do a
remote login to the linux box. However whenever dialup networking is used to
try to dial in all we get is the famous windows error that the password is
incorrect. We have read the man pages, and followed the instructions on
various readme pages, but have been unable to find a readme that addresses
this issue specifically with RH6. Could someone point me in the right
direction? Or tell me where I could get some support on this issue?
Thank You,

Hello everyone! Long time reader, first time poster! ;-)
I just upgraded my server from RH5.1 to RH6.0 without many problems at
all. Everything seemed to work out fine, with the exception that
SMTP connections into port 25 (from Eudora, Outlook, etc.) seem to be
taking forever!!! (as compared to sendmail 8.8.x -- versus 8.9.3 which
is shipped with it.)
Yes, I can telnet to the port, and it immediately responds..
everything else looks fine. What can I do? I know my reverse DNS
entries are correct from the originating ISP's, so that's not the
problem... there's nothing in the error logs which shows any
problems... what gives?
If anybody has seen this / has an answer, please let me know. Email
me at: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (note: do not simply reply, or mail will bounce
back.)
Thanks in advance!!!

I've seen this behavior before - you have to recompile
the universal nfsd package to use the new inode numbering
scheme. This fixes the "client thinks the file is a
directory" problem.
Have fun,

Hi
I am currently tring to implement a ppp server in red hat 6
for dial in by windows 95, but i have run into some
troubles. Currently i can log on and start a ppp connection
from the windows 95 machine to the linux box and ping the
linux box. When i try to ping anything outside the linux box
i get request timed out. I have enabled ip forwarding and
entered the proxyarp option in the options file and i am
unsure what to try next. The linux box is intergrated with a
novell network using boardermanger as the gateway. To enable
the wondows 95 machine to ping and connect to the internet
to i need to enable ip masquerading and ip chains or do i
need to change the routing within the novell network or is
there something else i need to do. Your help would be most
appreciated.

JUst happen to have a couple of URLs handy <G>
This site has a step by step howto for complete setup of samba. steps
for both linux and the win machine. (and they really work <G>)
http://www.sfu.ca/~yzhang/linux/samba/index.html
and this one as well
http://home.talkcity.com/MigrationPath/maguai/samba.html
These sites singly or in combination are nearly guaranteed to get you

ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -i ppp0 -j MASQ
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
insmod ip_masq_ftp
that should do it. The last line takes care of ftp.
If it works then merely add those lines into your

Does anyone have any experiences, good or bad, with the Network-in-a-box
products out there in the market?
For 100Mbps, here are the prices at a local CompUSA:
SMC: $130
SohoWare: $80 !!!
LinkSys: $120
All these include a 4 (+1 uplink) 100Mbps hub, 2 100Mbps PCI cards, 2
Cat5 cables, manual, drivers, etc.
Is the price right? Any other products? Which is the best? Does it make
more sense to buy each component piece-meal?
Do these network cards work with Linux? Would the PnP be a problem for
Linux? Are they _real_ Ethernet cards or just some winmodem-like junk?
Thanks,
Vikas

Hey:
I'm running RH Linux 6.0 with the 2.2.5 kernel. Trying to get it to load
level two v.90 modems. Set RHL up as a server, which installed EQL as a
module. Turned the module on with kerneld configurator. Downloaded
eql_enslave 1.2 from metalab, and installed it. However, can't get
eql_enslave to run. Keep getting an error message from bash saying that
it can't run this binary program. Tried unsuccessfully to recomplile
eql_enslave.c, but ran into problems with the eql.h file having been
replace by eql.c. Beginning to wonder whether eql_enslave will run with
the newer kernels and/or RHL.
Anyone out there have any experience with this?

As a little followup: the IP chains HOWTO states:
"You need a kernel which has the new IP firewall chains in it. You can
tell if the kernel you are running right now has this installed
by looking for the file `/proc/net/ip_fwchains'. If it exists, you're
in. " I've never seen this file, despite multiple recompilations of
the kernel to specifically include the required options.
