Hi there!
It's seems I am just one out of many reporting trouble with RH6.0 NFS.
Here's what happens:
We run a small Linux network within a larger network. DNS is serviced by
Solaris and HP servers, a RH6.0 Linux server takes care of NIS and home-dirs
for Linux users. NIS works fine, users can login etc., but the following
problems arise:
1. Server exports /home and /utils, which are NFS mounted by clients. Some
home dirs cannot be cd-ed to, others cannot be read by ls and other
tools.
/utils cannot be read by ls either. The problem is not in the exports
file
or in the access rights, we checked that all directories have same
access rights and all users are in the same groups.
2. When starting X with KDE, first time KDE users get a message 'creating
directory ~/Desktop' which remains on screen forever and hangs KDE. This
failure results in a lot of 'NFS server not responding messages on the
console, followed by 'NFS server OK' once kwm is killed
Anyone else having similar problems and has found a solution please let me
know. If the solution is knfsd 1.4.3 and a klockd patch, please tell me
where

After I have upgraded my PC from
Suse 6.0 ( kernel 2.0.36, ppp ? )
to
Suse 6.1 ( kernel 2.2.x, ppp 2.3.3 )
the pppd daemon exits with the error
'ioctl(PPPIOCGUNIT):Operation not permitted'
always, after the chat script has established the connection.
I tried several tools to establish the connection ( wvdial, xisp,
script-startup ) but they all behave he same.
Any idea's ?

one thing you'll need to do is
insmod ip_masq_ftp
that will handle the ftp ports masquerading problem.

Subject: RH 6.0, and WebSphere installation problems

Trying to install WebSphere Application Server (IBM) on a RH 6.0 machine.
Apache 1.3.6 with IBM HTTP over top - installed.
The install instructions for WAS say the following:
1. Set JAVA_HOME environment variable to root directory of JDK
2. Set PATH=JAVA_HOME/bin
3. Set THREADS_FLAG=native
After doing this and checking to see java will run successfully
(java -fullversion) I get the response from the install.sh script that says
set JAVA_HOME env. variable and run install.sh again.
I have tried the IBM jdk 1.1.6 (recommended in deja news group for
WebSphere) and also Blackdown.org jdk 1.1.7_v3 recommended in README file
for WAS. Same result with each JDK.
Anyone with experience with WebSphere yor help is appreciated. Any jdk
install experience also.....
I need to get the WAS running to serve servlets and JSP's.

My machine is running in Linux 2.2.5-15 RedHat 6.0.
After starting system , everythings seems [OK] , but when i try to send
somethings via Eth0 (3c509), like ping command i receive the message:
"Transmit timed out, Tx_status 00 status 2000 TX FIFO room 1456".
I try to set off the PnP (Plag and pray) bit with dos utility of 3Com ( ref.
How-to-Ethernet-5 Vendor/Manufacturer ...3Com...)and restart system but
dont'work.
The network (hardware resource) is tested and is O.K. No problems occurred
in Win98 with same situation.
Any help appreciated,

Isn't zlilo or bzlilo supposed to make the kernel image, copy it somewhere
and install it in lilo for you? What's the point of it over bzImage if it
doens't?

My Red Hat linux 6 was working ok. I was configuring Samba & it was working fine. When
I rebooted - the network card was no longer working. I tried ifconfig and it says
eth0:error fetching interface information: Device not found
I saw that at bootup etho was coming up. Using KDE Information - it shows that there
is a PCI ethernet card with IRQ 10 and I/O 0xe400 [0xe401]
I am puzzled & new to linux.
Please help!!!

Sorry for reposting but I got no answers in the first post

I'm trying to connect a Linux box (Slackware 4.0, kernel 2.2.6)
into an existing NT network. In this network, all other computers
are Win98 and grab their IP addresses (as well as other net info)
from a DHCP server in the NT box. Nt is running SP5 and all clients
communicate with the outside world via a Proxy Server (SOCKS)
I've setup dhcpcd into my linux box and it successfully retrieved
an IP and the rest. The dhcpcd-eth0.info looks like this:

The resolver.conf goes like this

Now the problems:
a) My machine can't ping other machines in the LAN by their names
but it can ping them by IP addresses. The others can ping the
linux box by its IP address also...
b) I can't go trough the NT server with telnet and ftp. However
I can access an ftp area in the NT box with ftp.
c) nslookup doesn't work, which means that I'm not reaching the DNS
which, by the way, is outside the LAN...
d) Win98 boxes can telnet into my Linux box using its IP but they take
a long time to connect. Some clients even give up before connecting
(like Win98 telnet)
e) Netscape works fine, if I configure it to use the NT proxy.
The problem is that dhcpcd is not very well documented... i've
tried to use
/sbin/dhcpcd -r -h delphis
in rc.inet1. I guess the -h option is to tell to the name of the host
to the DHCP server... but the dhcpcd-eth0.info has an empty HOSTNAME
(as well as an empty NETWORK). I don't know what to do...
1) Should I recompile the kernel using SMB support? Do I need to install
samba, even though I don't plan to share files or printers. The only
thing I want is to build a local webserver to permit people to
browse databases...
2) dhcpcd rewrites the resolver.conf and saves the older one
into resolver.conf.sv in /etc. Should I make a link to a
resolver.conf in /etc/dhcpc?
3) Should I set up manually hosts and networks? If so, how?
4) I guess the NT server is using a kind of SOCKS (Proxy)
(I was unable to speak with the manager yet) so I assume
I must get some sockyfied clients (telnet,ftp... others?)
5) Is it possible to use dhcpcd ina a system with two ether cards?
I think I've read somewhere that it was almost impossible to
setup masquerading (and a subnet) if the main ether card was
configured via dhcpcd

wildcard subdomains for the last 3 weeks:
2 (two) Providers have not been able to set them up for me.
Now I tried to set up DNS informations at "Public" (free) DNS
at granitecanyon.com , and I was able to set up correctly my domain
"in.cx" (it is already working, after a few hours!),
although one month ago I did not even know what a DNS was!
However, I am not able to set up WILDCARDS.
I would like ALL the domains *.in.cx to go to my IP.
Here are the attempts I made to set up wildcards and the errors I got

I have setup a PPP server from the documentation in the
ppp-howto and the serial-howto. It works fine when I dial-in
using my linux PC.
When I try to dial in using Windows NT,
it doesn't work. The error I get from dial up networking is
that the modem is echoing back characters of that the server
is attempting a TTY login before connecting. It says to
configure this entry for a post-connected Terminal. Error 737.
If I open up a terminal screen and login by hand, the PPP connection
works to the NT box. The problem I think is the Linux PPP server
is asking the username and password and the NT machine gets
confused.
Has anyone setup a linux box to act like a PPP server and
gotten it to work with Windows? Thanks for any help.

Standard for a non PNP based NIC, such as cheap ISA NE2000 compatible (DLink DE-220
by exemple).

You should disable PNP for your wanted non PNP card, launch a DOS Setup (on its
floppy drivers) set EPROM to wanted figures (I/O 0x240 IRQ 3 by exemple), and check
your " /etc/conf.modules ", all trouble is in there.

yep, ypserv runs with --dns option but this is needed. Would it help
to upgrade RAM from 32MB to 64MB ?

Guten Tag, Rainer,
T-Online should use its own TCP/IP stack which is using the dialer
only. The interface is proprietary, meaning that everything is built-in
to the T-Online interface much like the old interface for Compuserve
used to be. It was designed for machines and Operating Systems that did
not have native TCP support (re: Win3) This should not affect the
machine that has the T-Online software.

I'm a newbie linux user wanting to learn more...but I cannot run linux until
I've found a way to setup the same kind of network as I have currently with
my two windows machines.
I'd like to setup linux as a network server and internet gateway.
I'd like to be able to access my linux box with my win95 box via Direct
Cable Connection (parallel cable). And I'd like to be able to still use the
win95 box for http/ftp/telnet/socks/and DNS access through the linux box to
the internet.
If I could please get some intstructions on how to do this, it would be
greatly appreciated. My roommate gets upset with me everytime I run linux
and he can't access the internet. AND I'm sick of WINDOWS!
So far I can at least access the internet from linux, so all I need is the
network setup.

Hi,
I have a problem. I want to set up a router in order to
connect my LAN to the internet. Here arises a problem. I
need two networkcards of course. If I use two cards of the
same type Linux doesn't rcognize the second card because the
module "smc-ultra.o" is already loaded.
How do i have to configure Linux in order to use two
networkcards of the same type (SMC-Ultra) with a different
IRQ/IO setup?
Everything works fine if i use two different networkcards.
Any help would be appreciated :-)
