Compile the driver as a module, and set them up in /etc/conf.modules,
something like:
alias eth0 smc io=xxx irq=xx
alias eth1 smc io=yyy irq=yy
This was straight from my head, so the syntax may not be correct,
but you get the idea, right? Read the docs if you get trouble.

I forgot to mention that you will also need to load smbfs.o to get
smbmount to work.

You can take a look at the following area on Red Hat's site:
www.redhat.com/corp/support/docs/
Specifically, look at the PPP Client Tips section, which includes
instructions on how to use netcfg.
Good luck.

You can find that information in the SMB HOWTO but it might be easier to
change your smb.conf to enable encrypted passwords. www.samba.org is a
deep well of samba information.
Good luck!

Subject: Can't telnet to localhost
Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 10:47:47 GMT
Hi,
All of a sudden, I can't telnet to localhost on my RedHat 5.2 system.
When I try to telnet to localhost or 127.0.0.1, I get this:
[root@localhost network-scripts]# telnet 127.0.0.1
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Network is unreachable
[root@localhost network-scripts]# telnet localhost
Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Network is unreachable
However, after dialing in to my ISP with ifup ppp0 -dial. and THEN trying
to telnet to localhost, instead of getting my own machine, I get some
machine in my ISP's network!
I must have broken something, but I don't know what. It was working
perfectly before.
The details:
[root@localhost network-scripts]# more /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain
[root@localhost network-scripts]# more ifup-lo
DEVICE=lo
IPADDR=127.0.0.1
NETMASK=255.0.0.0
NETWORK=127.0.0.0
BROADCAST=127.255.255.255
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=none
When I'm dialed in to my ISP:
[root@localhost network-scripts]# netstat -rn
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface
10.65.70.12 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 1006 0 0 ppp0
0.0.0.0 10.65.70.12 0.0.0.0 UG 1006 0 0 ppp0
When I'm not dialed into my ISP, the routing table is empty.
When I try to add 127.0.0.1 to the routing table:
[root@localhost /root]# route add 127.0.0.1
SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable
Does anyone know what the problem is and how I could fix this?
Thanks,
Dan

Yes, the man pager would allow this, reading the man page as well as
disabling both auth and noauth afterwards. :-)
But otherwise, quoted from the /etc/ppp/options file that came with
pppd:
# Require the peer to authenticate itself before allowing network
# packets to be sent or received.
# Please do not disable this setting. It is expected to be standard in
# future releases of pppd. Use the call option (see manpage) to
disable
# authentication for specific peers.
auth
Disabling auth would also be just a temporary solution, until one of
the next upgrades of pppd. Furthermore I would consider the use of a
/etc/ppp/peers/provider file to be a somewhat cleaner solution. And it
actually works -- besides from my trouble with the appropriate file
and directory permissions.
So I'm still interested in an answer to my initial question: How can
pppd get a "permission denied" on reading the peers file, despite of
running suid root?
Cheers!

Hi there
I am quite a newbie too...hope I can help u :)
well, there are /dev/cua0 /dev/cua1.....
cua0 = COM1
cua1 = COM2
etc...
I think by default RH likes to have a /dev/modem, so what u can do is make a
symbolic link in the /dev directory, say if ur modem is on COM2, u can do
this...
<assuming u are already in /dev>
ln -s cua1 modem
COM1, COM3 uses IRQ 4
COM2, COM4 users IRQ 3
of course these are defaults...
If u are using an internal modem, there might be possibilities that there is a
interrupt conflict (happened with my friend..). There is a way to assign
different interrupts to ur internal modem card...but I have
forgotten...ANYONE??? :P
Foe me, I just went into 'netcfg' and u can add a PPP interface under the
'Interfaces' tab...
good luck

Is it possible to use the modem with minicom or any other
terminal-program? If
that doesn't work, maybe you have a so called winmodem which is not
supported
under Linux.
If the modem is working, then there's a different problem: kppp handles
locking
of the modem-device by itself. So if it starts the pppd, the pppd
complains
because the modem is already locked. So either you switch off the
lock-handling
in kppp (you can do that in some menue of kppp) or you edit the
configuration-
file of the pppd and disable locking there.
> How do you think I can fix this? Do you think this is a configuration
> problem or a problem with my modem? I didn't configure anything
> before...am I supposed to configure before I use kppp?
Please check first if you can use your modem with minicom. If you can't,
it
most likely won't work under Linux.

Check the xinitrc and Xclients files. You are using either your own
configuration files (hidden files in your home directory, thus
~/.xinitrc and ~/.Xclients) or the system global files (in
/etc/X11/xinit/).

Hi folks
Ever since I switched from PPP, modem and ISP to ETH0 and DHCP and LAN I
can not get any IDENTD response in IRC. It only happened after I
switched to DHCP and the network setup... over the modem and PPP it
works fine. I tried dhdpcd-0.70.tar.gz and the dhclient veriosn 2.0 form
the Internet Software Consortium www.isc.org... nothing worked.
My system: SW 3.6 kernel 2.0.36, ircII4.4.... I am on a network full of
M$ crap DHCP servers AFAIK. So I have no clue if that prevents me from
getting identd responses. The same happens under win95 on the same
machine with DHCP enabled in the network settings. It only works over
the modem and the ISP not over the ethernet card.
Any ideas?
Thanks a lot
Please reply by e-mail because the news feed here at school does not
