Hi to all,
I'm trying to setup COMPAQ computers for the company I work. I'm
using the kickstart proces, which I finally got to work both for 5.2 and
6.0 (6.0 works without any quirks, but 5.2 is a bit more &^*&&(*&(*& )
Since I'm setting up a server, and on the models I works with, the
TLAN adater is a builtin adapter to the machine. Under the 6.0 setup,
it picks it up no problem, but with the 5.2 setup, it is a no go.
I tried to rebuild the initrd.img image on the boot disquette to
include the tlan.o module so that the disk could have support for
it (module compiled from other 5.2 machine). Rebuilt the image. At the
end of the setup, where it tries to probe for NICS, it still does not
detect anything for the TLAN, even though I've specified the IRQ # in
the kickstart file
Did anyone got to get this type of NIC detected at startup and how
you did it would definitly be appreciated.... Is it wither by
recompiling the Kernel on the disk to include it or as a module ???
Thanks in advance.

Ok, I figured out how to get my card to work. I still want to learn how to
compile a new driver. Why? I guess 'cuz that's why I bought my copy of
Linux in the first place. Any how, here's how I got my Netgear NIC to work:
1) /sbin/modprobe tulip
2) /sbin/lsmod
3) /sbin/depmod -a
4) Put the following line in /etc/conf.modules (I had to create this
file)
alias eth0 tulip
5) Reboot the computer
6) ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1
7) I went into X and ran netcfg and set eth0 to start at boot
8) It worked!
Now I need to learn how to get a gateway (right word?) going that will dial
in when I try to get on the net from another machine. Then will disconnect
when I close down the browser on the other machine. Any ideas? ipchains?
proxy?
TIA,
Joe

In the /utils dir(?) on the 98 CD is a file called plaintxt.nfo ( or
some such, you'll recognize it). Simply dbl click and it does the
work. What it does is change the password encryption entry from 1 to
0
( or vice versa :) )
For the SAMBA probs try these:
This site has a step by step howto for complete setup of samba. steps
for both linux and the win machine. (and they really work <G>)

HI!!!
When using the command "net view \\server" on my Win-box, I should get
the shares on \\server, which is a Linux-box... But I always get
something like "Password error".
I tried the steps in /usr/doc/packages/samba/DIAGNOSIS.txt, but I can't
seem to solve the problem with it.
I'm logged on on the Win-box with "Duong", and I've got an linux-account
named "duong". Does it matter, that the linux-account is lowercast? The
password is the same on the Win-box and the Linux-box. In smbpasswd, I
just used an empty password (but I also tried it with the password I
used on the Win-box to log on).
I have not a single hosts deny, valid users or invalid users in my
/etc/smb.conf, only "hosts allow = ALL" in [global].
Testparm tells me thet smb.conf is ok.
Any ideas???
Thanks!
Rainer.

I am using Suse 5.3 and have 2 network cards.
I have a t-1 line at the customer and the linux is going to perform
masquerading for the entire company.
Do I need to tell the internal network card to use the external network
as a gateway. Or by entering the masquerading parameters in Yast will
handle everything?
I am used to modems and cable modems that have a script or dhcpcd that
sets up all the networking.

The options file is provided by the Linux distributor and is dated (old).
The pppd man pages through 2.3.5 carried a mention of this intent but
since at least 2.3.7 there is no mention of it. The latest pppd source
package is ppp-2.3.8 .
As far as "the permission denied" goes I'd conjecture that a program
is able to distinguish between the user that launched it and the user
running it and can deny access based on the user that launched it.
As I said, I don't have a good answer. Maybe there's someone reading
this that can confirm or deny this.

Hi folks!
I'm running a network with some Win9x-Clients and a Samba-server... Too
bad, my Samba-server doesn't show up in the network-neighbourhood...
I now made the tests out of /usr/dos/packages/samba/DIAGNOSIS.txt, and
test #6 failed. It's the one with the broadcast; the command is
"nmblookup -d 2 '*'".... To be honest, I'm not really surrised that it
didn't work, because I haven't set up any broadcast... In fact I don't
even know what it is :-)....
So, what do I have to do to set one up??
Thanks, Rainer.

Hi,
Try this one and look for Serial Programming Howto.
You can use another mirror of the Howto Pages if you know one.
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX-3.html#ss3.1
I don't know how far you want to go with this, but this is a good
starting point. I myself had to write my own driver for our project,
because I wanted to use a special protocol. I suppose that you do not
want to do that. So this hopefully will be enough information for the
beginning.

Did you try to install the newest version of pcmcia support on your
system?
Sometimes Debian is not fast in releasing the newest packages expecially
for
new hardware.
You can find the package under:
http://hyper.stanford.edu/HyperNews/get/pcmcia/home.html
I had a Waveless Lan card from Lucent Technologie and this was also not
supported. I had a look on their WWW sites and was lucky, cause they
provided
a Linux driver.
