I have RH 6.0 installed on my laptop, and I am starting to get
"neighbour overflow errors". I have DHCP set up on my laptop. If anyone
has seen this error before, and has a fix or can point me in the right
direction i would appreciate it. Thanks.

I'm not familiar with that model; but if it's a TCP/IP printer, just set up
a PS printer on that port. I would think that should work.

Good luck,

I have the exact same problem with two Linksys EtherPCI II cards (NE2000 PCI
module). At one point, I actually did have the two talking to eachother
(Telnet and FTP, and Samba), but had to reinstall the Linux OS due to
another problem. When I used what I thought were the same settings the
second time around, I got nothing. I would think that all one should need
to do is:

- for the Linux box:
    * set the eth0 to static IP address 10.0.0.1, netmask 255.0.0.0, no
gateway
        "ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 up"
    * give the eth0 host a name, in my case "linux0.mydomain.net"
    * add both the eth0 host (10.0.0.1) and the Windows host (10.0.0.2) to
the hosts file

- for the Windows box:
    * install Microsoft TCP/IP driver
    * set the static IP address to 10.0.0.2, netmask 255.0.0.0, no gateway

- for network:
    * plug both boxes into the hub, boot up, and ping away

As I said, at one point I had the two communicating just fine, and then upon
re-install, I could not re-establish the connection. When I have the Samba
daemon running on the Linux box, and the Windows box is running with Network
Neighborhood open, I will get an entry for the Linux box when it first
boots, but it goes away if I refresh the window. This tells me that there
is some sort of network communication happening at some point, but it goes
away. This is driving me &$#($ nuts. Please let me know if you get any
help.

Thanks,

Hello
I was wondering how I might go about limiting the amount of packets
uploaded/downloded to a single user? Can this kind of thing be done? we
need to limit certain bandwidth hogs from stealing all the bandwith of
our router!

TIA!

I have no experience with SMC NICs but is there anyway you can confirm
that the hardware is okay? A bootable diagnostics disk? Another system
with a different OS? Have you checked for IRQ conflicts?

Hi Wayne.

The FTP Daemon is installed but not set to run in a "workstation" class setup.
Edit your /etc/inetd.conf and make sure the ftp service does not have an # in
front of it. Also make sure your inetd process is auto-started for your
runlevel (default runlevel is 3).
>From the x-window control-panel select RunLevel Editor and add INET to the
Runlevel 3 Start tasks.
If inet was already started, select inet from the Available column, then
Execute, Stop then Start.

Hope this helps,

Subject: Quake2 file transfer very slow across ipchains firewall
Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 22:46:50 GMT

[Pardon me for the cross posting, but there are several software packages
involved in this problem and I don't know which one(s) is(are) to blame.]

The server for our LAN is running RedHat v6.0 (kernel v2.2.10). It uses
ipchains (v1.3.8) in acting as a firewall to the Internet via a cable
modem. Communication across the firewall is good, including low ping times
in the game Quake2 (v3.20) running under Win9x. So far, so good.

The problem is that file transfers (skins, game levels, sounds, etc.) in
Quake2 are excruciatingly slow, slower than the transfer rate across a
28.8/kbps modem.

I know what you're thinking: yes, I *do* have the Quake2 module loaded.
At boot time I do:

        /sbin/modprobe ports=26000,27000,27910,27911,27912 ip_masq_quake

Since I do get reasonable ping times, I'm wondering if file transfers are
done on a different port, a port that may be defined incorrectly in
ipchains.

Any thoughts on why file transfer is slow while communications are
generally good?

Thank you.

Hi guys,

I've got a Red Hat 5.2 machine and a Slackware 96 machine. i can mount a
directory from the Slackware machine (called /home/SlackExport) onto the
Red Hat file
system (under the mount point /mnt/SlackShare) without any trouble.
However, I CAN'T mount a red hat directory (called /home/RedExport) onto
the Slackware
machine (on the mount point /mnt/RedShare). When I try to do this I get
the error

mount clntudp_create: RPC: Port mapper failure - RPC: Unable to recieve.

Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Thanks.

I need help... Bad. I have Red Hat 6 installed and connect mount my volumne
on my Novell 3.12 server.

I followed the instuctions in the HOW-TO IPX primer but no joy. When I
'slist' I get an error about no servers found in ncp_mount.

I know my net card is working, however since I have TCP/IP connecitivity
fine to my other servers (and the internet).

First I 'ipx_configure --auto_primary=on --auto_interface=on'
then I 'cat /proc/net/ipx_interface'

which gives me a printout showing the correct IPX Network ID, frame type and
verifies my primary connection (eth0).

I really don't get it. Even trying to force a 'ncpmount' with my server
name, login id and password feeds back an error that the server cannot be
found.

I even re-compiled the kernel and made sure IPX support, NFS support and my
net card were built in and not modules. I don't know what I am missing.

I was tempted to try to install Caldera's Linux for Netware but everyone
keeps telling me that Red Hat 6 has built-in NFS support so... HELP!

Again, I would appreciate any help/suggestions/hints or redirections to any
resources which might help. Feel free to email...

Thanks,

Hello,

You should probably connect the CD-ROM back and install ftp server from it.
I don't think workstation installation will install it by default. Or you
can download it from one of Linux ftp sites.

Good luck!

Subject: Mac/NT/Linux networking question
Date: Fri, 16 Jul 1999 00:03:50 GMT

Hello all,

I would imagine this is a common question, but a search of DejaNews
didn't turn up the answer!

Bottom line, I need to share an NT directory to a bunch of Macs I'm
inheriting. The wrinkle is that I'm using Linux as a firewall. NT on
the Internet side, and the workstations on the firewalled side using
IP masquerading. Sharing the directory over TCP/IP is no problem for
our PCs, obviously.

Now, I know little about Macs. Sharing over TCP/IP may be built-in
behavior, I don't know. My questions:

1) Can a Mac share an NT drive using TCP/IP? (I assume AppleTalk is out,
unless there is some Linux magic to be had).
2) If not, is there software to do what I need?
3) Is there a good FAQ anywhere describing connecting Macs to NT?
4) Any other advice?

I can replace the Macs with PCs if I have to, but that would be kind
of wasteful. Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: Re: Linux Internet Email gateway and MS Exchange....

Hello,

Exchange server needs to have the "Internet Connector" installed and
configured to send all outgoing mail to Linux box (in the properties of
connector go to 'Connections' tab and choose 'Forward all messages to the
host' option, then enter Linux box's IP address there).

As far as accepting e-mail, I think your Linux box needs to be setup as a
primary e-mail exchanger (in DNS database), so all e-mail addressed to your
domain will be routed to that host. Then you need to work on creating domain
mail routing rule (search in sendmail documentaion for
/etc/mail/domaintable, also /etc/mail/mailertable) so all incoming e-mail
will be forwarded to the Exchange machine.

Good luck!

I didn't look at your smb.conf, but I do remember once hearing that MS Apps,
the big ones, tend to bomb on installing...if the files are under directories
with names longer than 8 characters.

MS Project was like this. It rufused to install from P:\MS Project\setup.exe
I had to rename the direcotry P:\MSPROJ and setup.exe ran fine.

This was for older versions of MS's install programs, you may have a new issue
but this may be worth the try.

If possible, change the BIOS to a non-plug-and-play operating system. I believe
that was necessary for my system to work after taking that particular network
card out of plug-and-play mode. I did not go back for a real test, however,
once it started to work, but it is easy enough to try.
