I had the same problem with an appletalk module and this worked for
me:
Modprobe is still loading old modules not compiled anymore.
Try running 'update-modules' to update this
and 'modconf' to specify the modules you want to be loaded at start.

It's part of the networking libraries. htonl, htons etc. The network
is big endian and x86 is little endian. On big endian machines the
functions don't do anything though. It's not a difficult macro either.

For the time being this isn't a viable solution to your problem. Linux
Free S/WAN does not support 2.2 kernels as of yet.

Subject: Periodic Packets from PPP

I have demand dialing set up via pppd, using an ISDN modem/TA. Requests from
the linux box and attached Win32 clients all initiate a connection OK. I see
no errors in the pppd log.
Problem: the connection stays up until the ISP disconnects(20 min - 60 mins,
dep. on ISP), even though I have specified 60 secs. in the ifcfg-ppp and
etc/ppp/options files. The ostensible reason for this is that while
connected, the modem receives a packet every 60 seconds. This all happens
even when the connection should be completely idle, and in fact no packets
are going out. Using TCPDUMP, I see each packet is a UDP packet for port
2348, and is 29 bytes long. I can filter out the packets with IPCHAINS (and
with no ill effect on anything I can see) but this is (apparently) too late
to affect pppd's idle timer. I tried the active-filter parameter for pppd
but I get an "unrecognized option" error in the log when I do that - the man
says it's only available with BSD-Net (whatever that is) so I guess I'm not
surprised.
This happens whether I dial into Bell Atlantic or another local ISP's ISDN
service.
Under Windows, the connection timed out in the interval I specified in the
connection settings, even though I still saw the modem recieve light flash
every second when the system is idle.
The failure to timeout will significantly increase my telco costs. Any
ideas?

It finally worked by building the eepro driver into the kernel. I thought
I'd tried this (unsuccessfully), but I must have messed up some how. In any
case, I couldn't get eepro driver to recognize two adapters when loaded as a
loadable module (the conf.modules approach). Building eepro into the kernel
and using the "append" line in lilo.conf worked.

Hi
I hope someone could help me out of this mess.
I' m using RH 6.0 and try to mount a Netware Volume
with ncpmount, but after executing ncpmount I only get
this message at the prompt: ncpfs version 2.2.0.16.
I'm using Kernel 2.2.10, I also tried 2.2.5 and 2.2.7
The IPX Configuration seems to be OK because nprint, pqlist,
slist, etc works fine, so what's wrong with ncpmount ??
Thanks in advance

Subject: ISP uses PAP, but not always??
Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 17:03:34 -0400
Hi,
I'm finding that about half the time, seemingly at random, I can't get a
connection to my ISP. Some days it's fine, some days it's inconsistent,
some days it takes so many calls to get a connection that I just give
up. The ISP uses PAP, but I've determined through my logs and through
minicom sessions that when things aren't working, for no apparent
reason, I get a shell account login prompt instead, in which case I
never get PAP authenticated and chat & pppd eventually give up. (I don't
have a shell account at the ISP!)
I've written to the ISP, but all they will tell me is "you need to make
sure you are using PAP in order to log in successfully. try forcing pppd
to use PAP."
I don't understand how to do this. I've gone through the PPP-HOWTO, the
pppd FAQ, man pppd, and man chat. I've seen occasional mention of
situations like this, with no instructions on how to deal with it.
I promise to post a summary of anything that works. Please help!
I already tried adding the "require-pap" option to /etc/ppp/options,
but that's not what's needed: it makes it impossible to connect. From
the pppd manpage,
require-pap
Require the peer to authenticate itself using PAP
^^^^
[Password Authentication Protocol] authentication.
And from the example scripts provided with pppd:
# This requires TWO WAY authentication - do NOT use this for a
standard
# PAP authenticated link to an ISP as this will require the ISP
machine
# to authenticate itself to your machine (and it will not be able to).
require-chap
So all that does is try to get my ISP to authenticate itself to my
machine, which it cannot do. I want the opposite: to force the ISP to
request MY machine to authenticate using PAP. Is there a way I can do
that?
I'm experimenting with a few things, but so far nothing seems to
produce consistent results. Today I'm connecting OK pretty often, but
I still sometimes get the shell login stuff.
Following are two log files: one from a failed connection, one from a
successful connection. You can see that in the failed connection, it
gets to the point where I would expect to see "garbage" from ppp
(starting with a tilde), but instead I get: "Annex Command Line
Interpreter * Copyright (C) 1988, 1996 Xylogics, Inc."
When that happens, ppp never seems to start on the server, so chat
doesn't exit on my system, and no ppp connection ever gets made.
Here's the log from a failed connection. (Produced by giving pppd the
"debug" option, and chat the "-v" flag.)
(Sorry this is a long message. I thought it best to include as much
information as possible. At the end I've included my /etc/ppp/options
and chat scripts.)

Subject: Has anybody gotten Pump to work with TCI@home?
Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 15:26:20 -0500
I can get my computer to see the internet by using dhcpcd -h blabla.
But when I try to configure the new pump (as per redhat's errata page),
it still fails to initialize eth0.
I also tried editing the ifup script that calls pump. I replaced the
pump -i eth0, with dhcpcd -h blabla, but that caused my computer to hang
during the linuxconf section.
Any help would be appreciated. I know the dhcpcd command works for me,
but am interested in using pump.
Thanks.

Subject: VPN, IP TUNNEL, SSH Question.
Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 20:41:13 GMT
Well after perusing the HOWTO's, it's time to ask for some expert
advice.
I have a small lan connected through ADSL and a linux box. (Redhat 6, IP
Masq, IP chains for firewall). I can easily connect from work to home
using SSH which is great to pickup files I need from home.
Here's what I REALLY want to do.
I would like to SSH from home (either from the firewall box or another
linux box on the lan) and get into my linux box here at work. (I am
writing code that works on specific hardware that is inconvienient to
bring home and it would be nice if I could work from home.)
There are some problems with this, though. I work for a large
corporation and do not have access to the firewall. Now, it lets me SSH
out to my home linux box, but I can't SSH back in. Plus, the IP address
for my work box is for our intranet only.
Here's what I would like to do.
1. Run some command that would cause my work machine to connect to my
local machine in say 20 minutes (the time it takes me to get home).
2. When I get home be able to compile and edit files that are in my
work computer (linux).
3. End the connection from home.
Now, I have looked at VPN, but am not sure if this is overkill for what
I want to do. I'm looking for an easy but very secure solution as I do
have both my and my employer's LANs to secure.
Simple answers like...use VPN, but with IPsec and setup a cron job to
connect...are fine.
Thanks for you help in advance.

Yes, it's very simple. I assume that you don't have an ethernet between
the two and are trying to use PPP over the serial cable. You haven't
said what OS ver you're running on the Mac and what PPP, but I will
assume that you are using OpenTransport with OT/PPP.
In that case, open the TCP/IP control panel and create a new config
set. The simplest option is to use static IP addresses (pick anything
you want as long as it is on the same network as the Linux box). Select
"connect via: PPP", and "configure: manually" then enter the IP addr
you have assigned to your Mac, gateway addr is your Linux box etc.
Now configure the PPP by selecting either the PPP control panel or the
Remote Access control panel (I don't kow which version you have),
create a new PPP config, set the "modem" to be one of the
Apple-supplied null modem scripts (null modem 115200, null modem 57600
etc) as required, then click the options button, and under "protocol",
select "use protocol: PPP", then check all the boxes. Under "command
line host" click "use terminal window".
Now click oK, then the "connect" button and PPP will bring up a
terminal window. Log on to your Linux box, then start up ppp using the
command
pppd proxyarp
PPP should now start up on the Mac. and you will be able to telnet etc
to your Linux box. Now back in the Remote Access/PPP control panel, use
the "save as script" button to save the terminal session as a logon
script, then click the options button again, go to the protocol tab,
and this time, under "command line host", click the "use script"
button, then the "import script" button and select the script that you
have just created. Now close everything and save the config, then next
time you fire up an IP-based appl on your Mac, it will bring up the PPP
connection for you.
Basically, it's not very different from configuring the Mac to connect
to an ISP via dial-up PPP. You can also configure the Linux box to use
PAP/CHAP, hand out IP address etc. Config on the Mac then becomes much
simpler. See "man pppd" on the Linux box and the various PPP "howtos".

Subject: How do I access Win9x or NT Shares from Linux?
Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 16:25:42 -0400
Hi,
I would like to access some Windows 98 Shares or NT 4.0 Shares from my Linux
box... The shares are already setup and can be access from any other win9x
clients... i would like to mount those shares from Linux boxes.... in
read/write mode...
Could someone send me the step by step instruction how to do that?
Thanks,
