Hi,

I have setup Redhat ver 4 and ipop3d.
Is there a limited on mail box size that pop3 can handle.

It seems that I am having problem downloading mail from linux mail server if
my mailbox size > 2M.

I am using ms outlook, I also try outlook express but no luck. (I get,
timeout error or server not responding).

Is there any command option that I need to set on inetd.conf for ipop3d to
handle mail box larger than 2M?

I appreciated if you could e-mail me the reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks in advance.

I'm having problems with FTP downloads since I setup a RedHat IP
Masquerading workstation. I kinda fixed the problem with the FTP client when
I specified to use passive mode but I cant doenload anything from the web
browser.

Any suggestions on the cause or solution to this problem?

and don't forget to do the wvdial.conf wvdial.conf thing after you conplile

What do you exactly mean by controlling the throughput of TCP/IP packets ?
if you want to implement
some kind of Quality Of Service or Bandwidth on Demand, you may have a look
on the CBQ library.
(Class Based Queueing),

It does allow you to allocate a minimal amount bandwith according to the
type of protocol you want to
use, and is dropping packets related to other streams if needed.

http://www.aciri.org/floyd/cbq.html

You may have a look on the following commercial site as well for an
introductory text to CBQ:

Dennis,

Are you running the ftp module? If you have a "out of the box" Linux
setup, you simply run modprobe ip-masq-ftp or something like that. I
can't remember the name of the module. Use the list module to find out.

The ftp module corrects some problems when FTP downloads (And lists) use
the PORT command. Without it, you get intermittent goofiness when doing
FTP downloads. Sounds like this is your problem...

There are separate modules for running lots of stuff (icq, quake,
cuseeme,etc).

Subject: Improving Webserver performance
Date: 19 Jul 1999 21:49:54 -0500

Hi,
I apologize if you've seen this posting before. I recently wrote a
paper entitled "TCP Implementation Enhancements for Improving Webserver
Performance". The abstract for the paper is attached below. While the paper
studies BSD TCP implementation, some of the proposals might also be relevant
to Linux. The paper can be downloaded from either of the following sites:

   http://cs-tr.cs.rice.edu/Dienst/UI/2.0/Describe/ncstrl.rice_cs/TR99-335/
                                or
   http://www.cs.rice.edu/~aron/papers/rice-TR99-335.ps.gz

- Mohit

Abstract:

This paper studies the performance of BSD-based TCP implementations in Web
servers. We find that lack of scalability with respect to high TCP connection
rates reduces the throughput of Web servers by up to 25% and imposes a memory
overhead of up to 32 MB on the kernel. We also find that insufficient accuracy
in TCP's timers results in overly conservative delays for retransmission
timeouts, causing poor response time, low network utilization and throughput
loss. The paper proposes enhancements to the TCP implementation that eliminate
these problems, without requiring changes to the protocol or the API. We also
find that conventional benchmark environments do not fully expose certain
significant performance aspects of TCP implementations and propose techniques
that allow these benchmarks to more accurately predict the performance of real
servers.

After you telnet in as a normal user, all you have to do is use the
"su" command to do the things you want. Not being able to telnet in
as root is a security feature. I know that can be disabled but I'm
not sure how.

You can also install an X server (I believe that is the correct
terminology) on the Windows side. The one I use is from Starnet
(http://www.starnet.com). Unless you purchase the package, it
only works for two hours at a time. There are also other similiar
programs.

I run Linux on a 486 that does not have a monitor. I just telnet
in from either the Windows 95 machine or a Sun machine.

The pppd software can be found here:
ftp://cs.anu.edu.au/pub/software/pub/

There are many chat examples given in the included documentation. This
would be the best place to start. A search of http://www.deja.com for
chat scripts will most likely give you something to try. There are
probably one or two chat scripts included in your Linux distribution.

There are a couple of things to try.

One, you can make a hosts file on your MS Windows machine. It is
the same format as the one on your Linux machine. It goes in your
c:\windows directory. Place the names of all your machines in it.

Two, do you have any other network protocols installed on the Windows
machine? I only have TCP/IP installed on my Windows 95 machine.
I don't think you really need anything else.

Three, if none of the above help, search http://www.deja.com. I
have seen others post diald filters to help stop Windows inquires.
I have never bothered with them because I don't seem to have this
problem.

Four, I have seen others mention using tcpdump as a means to find
out what is bringing the link up. Make sure it is the Windows machine
and not something else on one of the other machines. Do you have any
software checking for email or something like that every five
minutes or so?

If you just have your Linux machine and a print server, then
just do something like this:

================================================
/etc/hosts

127.0.0.1 localhost loghost
192.168.100.10 linuxmachinename.domainname linuxmachinename
192.168.100.11 printserver
================================================

I believe you then need to startup the loopback device and the
dummy device to fake a networked system.

On Slackware, an abreviated /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 file (where my
networking stuff is started) would look like this:

================================================
#! /bin/sh
#
# rc.inet1 This shell script boots up the base INET system.
#
# Version: @(#)/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 1.01 05/27/93
#

HOSTNAME=`cat /etc/HOSTNAME`

# Attach the loopback device.
/sbin/ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1
/sbin/route add -net 127.0.0.0 netmask 255.0.0.0 lo

# Attach the dummy device.
/sbin/ifconfig dummy homer.muscanet.com
/sbin/route add -host homer.muscanet.com
==================================================

You may have to rebuild your kernel with the dummy device enabled.

There is a document and book (published by O-Reilly I believe)
called Network Administrators Guide that would be very helpful
to you.

This will sound very strange ....

I am trying to configure PPP on a RedHat 5.1 (kernel 2.0.35) system. The
system previously ran RedHat 4.1 and all hardware worked fine for pppd.

The pppd daemon fails with a connect script failure. Using the "-v" option
of chat shows that no response ever comes back from the modem (i.e., never
see "OK" in response to "ATZ"-- timeout is at default 45 seconds).
However, if I do

"echo ATDT5551212 > /dev/modem",

the modem dials out and attempts to connect (although it seems to take an
awfully long time to do so).

I am using ttyS3 for the modem, and have nothing competing for resources on
ttyS1. The /dev/modem is a hard link to /dev/ttyS3.

I am at the point of looking through the chat.c code, and feeling somewhat
daunted. If anyone has a suggestion, please send it my way.

Thanks in advance,

Jim

I have RH5.1, attached is smb.conf, and it has 3 print queues setup. All
work fine on small files, but large files >20MB choke the queues (these are
graphic laden Pagemaker files). Workstations are all Win98. When the queues
choke, the first indication is the status in the Win98 spool dialogue goes
blank. The hard disk on the server seems to thrash for quite a while, but
settles down after about a half an hour.

The server is an old Intergraph TD-1 with 32MB RAM and about 200MB free on
the HD. Any ideas? Is there a time out that can be reset? Would extra RAM
help? I'd hate to go back to NetWare, but it had no problem with these jobs.

Subject: Help! Alcatel ADSL modem locks up?
Date: Mon, 19 Jul 1999 22:22:46 -0500

I have ADSL at home with SWBell, and they have provided me with an Alcatel
1000 ADSL external modem.
I'm running it, connected to a 10base-T ethernet card in a 486 Linux 2.2.5
computer, which serves as an IP masquerading server for my home LAN.

There is another ethernet card that is connected to a hub on which all my
other computers reside.
The computers on my side has 172.16.17.x addresses and the card connected to
the ADSL modem gets it's IP address via DHCP.

Most of the time stuff works fine :), However (ther's always a however :( )

Now the problem that I am having is this: Every so often, I cannot get
packets out to the internet, even though DHCP has not timed out and my ISP
connection light is still green.
details: ifconfig still shows both network cards working ok, with the
card connected to the ADSL modem still having the IP address.
However I cannot even ping to the router on the otherside of the ADSL modem.
All lights are green and I can see the ADSL TX/RX light
flash as I try to ping outside.
This problem is pretty sporadic, and usually occures only when I have
packets going through (i.e. never found the system in said state even after
prolonged idle times (>1 day), and also happened to me thrice in 1 hour ).

The only solution (i have found) is to power cycle the modem and request
another DHCP IP address (ifdown eth1, then ifup eth1). Incindently just
requesting another IP address via DHCP does not help without the modem power
cycle.

Any ideas?

P.S. I was using the same setup with a modem as the internet connection
point (via ppp) things were just honky dory (i.e. fine :)

Other details: Internal ethernet card=3COM 3C5xx, ADSL ethernet
card=Kingston tech, NE2000 compatable, both ISA.

thanks,
Vipin
