Are you sure this is an error?
Is the requested IP-Adress on the net (collision domain)?
What does tcpdump exactly tell you?

I dont think.

What would happen if all routers would route all broadcasts??? Br.c. must
noch be routed.
I am not sure, but i think you need a WINS server.
Did you try file://ip-of-the-computer/ ? Do you get a listing?

Subject: Pop server very slow
Date: Tue, 20 Jul 1999 08:05:58 -0400
Hi.
I'm trying to use the Red Hat 6 as internet gateway in a corporate
environment. I don't have internet connection just yet, but the server is
set up, ready to go. In the server I have two network cards (100Mbs) one
is connected to the internal network, the other one will be connected to
the ADSL (2.5Mbs) router (perhaps tomorrow). The computers on the
network are configured (through an NT DHCP server) to have the default
gateway pointing to the internal network card in the Linux machine.
Whenever I try to telnet from a workstation to the Linux I have to wait
3-5 minutes while it is connecting properly. Same with the FTP and POP3
servers.
the Linux originally was set up to use as default gateway it's own
(internal) IP, but I took that out, hoping that the whole thing will
speed up a little bit.
Any idea what's going on?
thanks, Zoltan

of course. run a ping/control loop like I do. see my netmgt web page
for a demo. while my crashcatel still hangs, I have a 'bot that
notices when things have gone to hell and executes a
(shutdown..wait..test) procedure. it uses the remote X10 controller
(power line remote control) to powercycle the damned thing, wait a
minute, power it up again, wait 45secs (to come alive again) and start
polling all over again. and it logs events graphically so I can keep
pachell honest.
just today I noticed a major hang in the pacbell cloud - but my
default router behind the dslam was fine so for once, the
crashcatel1000 wasn't at fault. HOWEVER, we just had business-dsl
installed (on friday) and while it worked quite well yesterday, today
at 4am or so, it went to hell. I called in to pachell and showed them
my graphs and said 'fix it dammit'. without data there's no way to
keep a carrier honest. this is the ultimate defense in the SLA war, I
think ;-)
anyway, see my website for info. the code isn't the prettiest but
I'll release it to anyone who wants it. you need to run linux (or
some unix variant) and you'll need some kind of remote power
controller/relay device. its a GOOD idea to get in on that X10 promo
they're running right now. I paid $50 for my remote box, but now
they're giving it away for $6 or so!!

enjoy (if that's possible) ;-)

PLIP (Parallel Line Internet Protocol) works with parallel (printer)
ports. At worst, you've either used the wrong cable or the wrong port),
while at best, either the serial cable or PLIP is not relevant.
>What do I have to do to get this "network" to work???
Serial-to-serial:
- read the Serial-HOWTO and the PPP-HOWTO
- cable your windows machine serial port to
your linux machine serial port using a "null-modem"
serial cable
- configure a linux ppp 'server' to talk to the
serial port in ppp
- configure your windows Winsock dialer to talk to
the serial port, and to pass the Linux login info
- go to it
Parallel-to-parallel:
- compile the PLIP support into your Linux kernel
- cable your windows machine parallel port to
your linux machine parallel port
- configure your linux ppp 'server' to talk to the
plip device
- get and install the Crynwr PLIP packet driver for
your Windows machine
- ? write a howto ?

One of the things you are looking for is a NWADMN32.EXE program for LINUX. As
best I can tell this does not exist yet. But, it seems like LDAP will be
solution. It appears we can use this technology to store user names, passwords,
rights to directories, volumes etc, email information, roaming profiles etc
I wish I had the brains & time to implement this concept.

Yesterday, there was a post (from Morris(?) Maynard) saying that disabling
Van Jacobsen compression might do the trick, and it did!! Thanks a TON!! I
edited my /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 and included novj in
ppp-opts, and things worked beautifully from there.
I've noticed the neighbor table overflow message a few times myself, and
it appears to me that this message crops up when one has both eth0 and the
ppp0 enabled. It stops showing up after I do a ifconfig eth0 down.

Subject: Sending emails over a network

Hi!!
I've got a network (TCP/IP) with one Linux-Server (Samba) and a few
Windows-Clients. As I have an ISDN-card in the Linux-Server, I want to
use it from the Windows-CLients. That means, I want to be able to send
an email from a Windows-Client over the ISDN-card in the Linux-Server.
Basically, I think it can't be a too big problem: the mail is sent over
the network to the server, and it transmits it... But, I have now idea
how to get that working :-)
Thanks for any help!!
Rainer.
PS: How I access the Internet form the Linux-PC??? I have a fixed
IP-adress (192.168.1.1)!!

Hi;
I just loaded RedHat 6.0 and tried out my new cable modem with the same
results as the previous versions of Linux. The dhcp client is 1.3 (which,
according to the documentaiton is supposed to fix some these problems). I
keep getting a time out waiting for valid DHCP reply message in my logs.
Mediaone doesn't provide any help for this; they say they only support MS
viruses - operating systems.
Does anyone have a cable modem working with MediaOne? Any tips on what I
might try now?
Thanks for any help.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,
I used to connect my RH6.0 Linux box to my company (they are using NT
RAS) in order to access internet. After my company upgraded their RAS
and is using MSCHAP V2, I can no longer connect using this way. I
decided to setup another Linux Box in my office's desk and connect a
modem to it so it can act as my own PPP server.
After I set it up, I use a Win95 as client and dial up to the PPP
server. Everything looks good. I can telnet to the server; access the
intranet and internet just as if I am in the office. It is perfect, I
could say. However, I could not connect to any machine using RH6 linux
as a PPP client after I went home:
- I use kppp to dial to the server
- Modem connection is made (timer is start)
- If I ping the server, server doesn't respond (I can see the "TD" led
on modem blink so I assume the default route is set up correctly. There
is none activity on "RD" led so I believe the server just doesn't
respond to the ping request)
- ping to other hosts inside intranet failed just as ping the server.
I don't understand why the server doesn't respond to my ping requests
(and telnet requests etc.) The physical connection (modem) seems good
and routing are correct (at least request are sending through the
modem).
Here are some information I captured from PPP client after connection is
made:
