Hi,
I used to run a lil 486 32mb of ram with DSL on one card and
100BaseT on the other. Granted, I'd never get full output
on the 100baseT, but I planned to upgrade the 486 in the future anyway.
The 486 did fine. :)
The only issue was kernel compiles. I'm probably exagerating, but
it seemed to take 2 hours to compile a kernel. That was my
only complaint.

Date: Fri, 23 Jul 1999 04:44:52 GMT
I'm having problems with lpr and the -s switch. Well, actually, lpr -s
works, but if I try to use the -r option together with the -s, it doesn't
work. ie: lpr -rs <filename>
Linux accepts the command, but depending upon the order of the -r and -s,
different things happen. lpr -rs causes the file to be copied to the spool
directory and deleted upon completion. lpr -r -s does the same.
lpr -sr creates a symbolic link in the spool directory (as desired), but
doesn't delete the file upon complete. Neither does lpr -s -r.
Does anyone know how I can use lpr to print using symbolic links (ie: the -s
switch), and have lpr automatically delete the original file upon
completion? I can't seem to get any combo of switches to work!
Am running RH 5.2. Looked for an lpr version number, but can't seem to
figure out how to find it.
THanks!

Subject: Linux as Firewall for DYNAMIC IP PPP connection
Date: Fri, 23 Jul 1999 04:16:16 GMT
I have a setup at home, with currently two computers on a network.
My machine, a P266MMX, is triple boot 98/NT 4 server/Linux (Redhat
5.1/2.0.37 kernel, firewall options all ok, ppp and slip configured
etc..)
Under '98 I have a great program called Wingate, which allows the
other machine on the network to access the internet, and provides
caching, dial-on-demand, etc...
It is also available for NT, great, easy..
But setting up Linux as a firewall or proxy is really starting to piss
me off, I have read two docs from the internet
linuxjournal.com:82/lj-issues/issue24/1212.html
and
www.xs4all.nl/~bengel/donkers.html
Neither of which even MENTION dynamic IP.
I have looked into Sinus, and FWTK, neither of these document
either... and fwtk seems too difficult to get...
I don't care whether the machine will be a packet-filtering firewall
or an app-level bastion host...but the solution has to be free!
btw I plan to replace it with a '386 for this purpose which will be in
linux 24/7 (cos there no way I'm running '95 on it!!) to provide some
stability for my user (ie Dad who gets annoyed when he can't check his
email...) comments on speed welcomed...it is just a 33.6k connection
So, can anyone point me in the right direction, or tell me how to
allow for the static IP of the ppp adapter based on the instructions
in the first or second documents, or on another document....
ANYTHING!!
Thank you in advance!!

I found the site very useful but there are so many different build with
the
same name "suck". I am using RedHat 6.0, suould I choose the one which
is also from RedHat or I could use other distributions?
And if I use this program, do I still need to keep INND running or it
will
serve the same function as INND?
So, there is no way to achieve this goal without add additional program
and just use INND alone?
Thank you very much!

Hi,
I use Omni-NFS 4.0 Server/client for WIn9x/Win/NT. Just installed Slackware
4.0 this way without a hitch. Ithink you can get it at www.shareware.com,
just do a search for NFS to get the file. I'm not sure of the cost of this
shareware package. But will find out soon since it meets my needs.

First, I create the newsgroup successfully, and it shows in group list.
Second, I run the command "nntpget" like you stated,
nntpget -o netnews.worldnet.att.net
but it seems nothing happened. Although in /var/spool/news/articles,
there is a directory named /comp/os/linux/networking/, but nothing
inside. And I use System Monitor to see, nntpget is running but seems
didn't get any CPU time.
In /var/log/news/news.err, there are some message like,

And all over over again. Should I change some setting or config file

Subject: Newbie problem...Dual ethernet cards
Date: Fri, 23 Jul 1999 05:44:41 GMT
Ok, I am an extreme newbie here, so any and all help is appreciated.
One of my computers is based on a QDI LegenX DP motherboard with an
onboard Intel 10/100 NIC. The problem is that this NIC stopped Rx'ing
about 3 months ago, so I installed a Realtek 8139 PCI 10/100 card.
Since the onboard NIC cannot be disabled, the machine basically had
two operational ethernet controllers. Now, at the time I did it, the
machine was NT only and it worked fine.
The problem is that I just installed Mandrake 6.0 on it last week. The
Mandrake installation detected and set up the Intel NIC, but I can't
get it to do anything with the Realtek card. I found a module file
called rtl8139.c on the Internet, but I'm clueless as to what I do
with it.
Can anyone explain what I need to do/point me to a good walkthrough? I
found everything I need to configure the network AFTER the card is
recognized, but I'm lost as to the first step here.

That's kind of strange since I installed 4.51 more than a month ago it

Date: Fri, 23 Jul 1999 02:00:00 -0500
I am trying to setup PLIP so as to do an NFS install on a laptop with no
PCMCIA ethernet or a CD-ROM. I'm using RedHat 5.2 both on the server
computer and as the to-be-installed OS. On the notebook side, I've a
Dell Latitude XPi. As the server, a Compaq 486/66.
I followed the instructions in the HOWTO. I am using a cable
I've purchased from a computer chain which is supposed to be for
"Interlnk and Windows 95 Direct Cable Connection." Interlnk being the
little networking proggie that came with DOS. The module loads fine on
the server, I setup a link with ifconfig as per the HOWTO. I also make
it the default connection for the server. The odd thing is, I cannot
actually get a link going. ifconfig on the server returns that packets
have been both sent and recieved. When I ping, it get's 100% packet
loss. But when the notebook asks repeatedly for the NFS mount, there is
a long pause (timeout) and then tells me it cannot mount that directory
on the server. NFS is up and functioning, as I've confirmed via an
ethernet connection.
I've tried this with both the notebook and server in both
"Normal" and "Bidirectional" modes. Any ideas? Any more pointers to info
on PLIP?
Are there any odd problems with RedHat 5.2's implementation (?) of PLIP,
maybe on the installation disk side which I should be aware of?
I apologize for the scatterbrainedness of this post. I'm tired.
I would appreciate an email as I do not frequent the groups often.
Thanks much!

I have a cnet pro120 fast ethernet card. It uses the tulip.o module.
I've trying to get this to work for two days now. When I use the module
that comes with RedHat 6.0(0.89), it loads up okay, but no networking
works whatsoever. On the manufacturer's website(www.cnet.com.tw), they
have a link to 0.90 driver. I tried compiling it and the latest
version(0.91g), but even though I compiled using the smp version of
options in the source, it gives me an error saying that it's written for
the non-smp version. I tried recompiling the entire kernel with the new
driver source in the appropriate directory, and when I try to boot the new
kernel, the system freezes in the "probing modules" section. Please
e-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you can provide any help

You need to configure your NT-in-Linux machine to use WINS or lmhosts for
NETBIOS name resolution.
Even if you can ping pdc by name, it does not mean you can login on to
domain. WINS or lmhosts will help.

Subject: setting up a ppp server
Date: Fri, 23 Jul 1999 07:51:16 GMT
Hi,
I'm trying to set up a ppp link between two PCs.
None of them has a static IP address.
I just want one PC to call the other on the phone, create a ppp link,
and then for example use ftp. I suppose the ppp connection can give two
random IP addresses to the machines, since they won't be connected to
the outside.
So, I've set up one PC to be the server, following the instructions
usually given:
I updated /etc/inittab, mgetty's mgetty.config and login.config, ppp's
ppplogin, options and options.ttySx, and /etc/passwd.
On the client I created a chat script and a connect-ppp script.
I can now connect from the client to the server, but the result is not
much satisfying:
ppp doesn't automatically start up on the server (yet mgetty's
login.config contains /AutoPPP/ ... /etc/ppp/ppplogin) if the ppp
user has /bin/bash in /etc/passwd
the server's modem immediately hangs up if the ppp user has
/etc/ppp/ppplogin in /etc/passwd
In both cases, I can't do anything between the PCs.
'ifconfig' ran on the server gives nothing (except loopback...)
on the client it gives ppp0 UP with two IP addresses.
However I can only ping the local address, the server's one can't be
reached.
Finally, the only thing I can do is to use minicom to establish the link
and then find me on the server's directories (if /etc/passwd contains
/bin/bash...), just like a telnet session.
Please help me having ppp working on the server.
All I want to have is an IP address for the server that could be
ftp-reached by the client.
