Subject: Telnet problem.
Date: Fri, 23 Jul 1999 08:40:57 +0800
Hi,
I have setup a small networking in my house. It consists of 4 PCs. 3
win95 PCs and one is a Linux box. The Linux box acts as a file server
(running Samba). Now all my machines can ftp and ping the Linux box and
vice versa. But when it come to telnet, one of my win95 PC does not
connect - or rather it get stuck half war. When I telnet from this
particular machine, I get the first two greeting lines but never the
login prompt. All my other machines are fine.
I probed further and found that this problem only persists for certain
IP address. The following addresses have been assigned to the machines:
Linux box = 20.0.0.1
win95-1 = 20.0.0.2
win95-2 = 20.0.0.3
win95-3 = 20.0.0.4
No the strange thing is that only win95-2 (which has the IP 20.0.0.3)
has this problem. Can anyone help on this? I have posted this before
but the problem has not been solved yet.
Thanks a million in advance.
regards,
Venantius.

A Windows 98 system will broadcast to that IP upon boot up. I never
could figure out what M$ was up to with that. There doesn't seem to be any
way to keep the Windoze machine from doing it either. I don't think it will
cause any harm, at least it hasn't on my LAN yet, but you probably want to
block it just in case.

I just set this up tonite....*seems* to work. here is what I did...(I'm using
RedHat6)
in the /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall script
/sbin/ipchains -I forward -p tcp -s <external ip/subnetmask> <external port> -j
MASQ
/usr/sbin/ipmasqadm portfw -a -P tcp -L <external ip> <external port> -R
<internal ip> <internal port>
Example:
My ip to the outside world is 201.201.201.201 with a 24 bit subnet (class
C)...my internal subnet is on the 10.0.0.* range with a class C as well. I want
to forward all port 2000 traffic to my internal masqed ftp server at 10.0.0.50.
/sbin/ipchains -I forward -p tcp -s 201.201.201.201/24 2000 -j MASQ
/usr/sbin/ipmasqadm portfw -a -P tcp -L 201.201.201.201 2000 -R 10.0.0.50 21
ok this seems to work BUT, it will *NOT* work from the router *OR* any of the
masqed machines.. you /must/ test this from the "outside world".

Linux Geniuses!
I was wondering if you could help me and my school solve out linux/Nt
networking headache.
The school is running a NT4.0 server that has four network cards that are
connected to hubs that are located in the school. its IP is 10.15.16.1 and
the other cards IP's are 10.15.64.1, 10.15.48.1, 10.15.32.1, etc. The Nt
server acts as a gateway for traffic from these subnets. We are all using
DHCP assigned addresses but I reserved one for the linux box 10.15.64.7.
What I can ping is 10.15.16.1 the Server and the computers on the subnets
because I passed this route command "route add default gw 10.15.16.1" and
the it goes! The Ntserver is connected to another server running WinProxy
and it has 2 network cards, this computer handles the internet. I cannot
ping It! It's address is 10.15.0.1 the windowz boxes on the subnets can but
I cant! (dont worry my DNSes are set and everything) this Proxybox is a
router to the net it's other Ethernet card is connected to the net (complex
100mbit stuff, not important) it's IP is 10.15.88.1. I need to figure out
how to set my route in linux to be able to ping the ProxyBox and then
travel
to the internet. Can you offer any advice? Also the Proxybox is running
WinProxy for web and ftp transfers...do I have to worry about it? any thing
that I am required to set?
I am using RedHat 5.2 with kernel 2.0.36 and an eepro100 network card on a
pentium pro.
Thank-you in advance!

Hey, where is your problem? Just get Squid and install it.
It is not that difficult as it seems to. The config file
(preinstalled) is very big, but you only need to set three
or four options so Squid is ready to as YOU need it.
I also installed Squid some weeks ago (the first proxy I
installed ever) and it took me about 20 minutes (and 17
minutes of the 20 I needed to read the config file) ;-)

I'm running RH 6.0. On the man page (info lpr), the description of the -r
parameter says: (qouting)
-r remove the file upon completion of spooling. Can not be used with
the -s option, due to security concerns.
My guess is that the security concern is that some nasty person could use
the -r -s to delete a file which they only had read access to. Since the
lpd usually runs as a superuser, this could bypass normal permissions to
a file.

Hi,
Yes it is possible to load Linux from the Win/9x machine.
What you can do is an NFS install from a Win/9x/NT server. What you need is
a NFS server software package. Several available on the web, try
www.shareware.com and search for NFS. Then download your choice, I found
Omni-NFS to be easy to setup and use.
Once you download the NFS and setting it up, you can then do a share with
the Linux box across your network for an NFS install. BTW, this is all
documented in the HOWTOs'.

I have a PII 450 MHz w/512 MB ram and a clean RedHat 6.0 w/updates. The
/home partition is NFS mounted from and SGI. When I take a look at cpu
usage i kpm/qps most of the cpu is idle (~85%), but load average reports
around 2. Isn't load average a function of cpu usage (only, mostly)? Can
it be that some process is running, but not showing in ps/top/kpm? I
feel that the system response has been reduced quite a bit after
upgrading to RedHat 6.0.
Please email me as well as post to this NG!

George,
Unless you have modifed your /etc/syslog.conf file, logging info is already
contained in the following files.
/var/log/secure (ip address of telnet client along with username)
/var/log/xferlog (ftp)
/var/log/messages (authenticated user, plus most other logging)
/var/log/maillog (sendmail logging)
/var/log/httpd/log.whatever (setup by apache config files as to location)

Rich,
Add all the client Hostname/IP pairs that are telneting to your Linux box to
the /etc/hosts file or make sure that the DNS server that your Linux box is
querying contains the reverse lookup info.
Also, by default, you cannot login as root using telnet (remotely). Only
from the console of the local machine. Simply add a user to the Linux box,
then telnet into the system using that account. Once you have logged in as a
regular user, you can then "su" to root as needed.

I wanted to set the automounter to mount machines onto /hosts, then
under the machine name I wanted to have the exported directories; ie.
/hosts/machine1/export1, /hosts/machine1/export2.
The man pages refer to needing a host map; but all our SGIs do this
without one. We're using an NIS server.
Is there a simple way to do this?
