I read up on configuring Sendmail - then put the project on the
backburner for a while - exams!
It turned out to be a doddle to set up a basic system that worked with
my ISP - BTInternet. I managed to find somebody who had already managed
to set it up and asked for assistance.
It isn't that tricky to configure.
I had far less success when I tried smail although it may just be me!
As to security - that does not really bother me too much - a small linux
setup on a dynamic IP account.
What sort of size network are we talking about here?
1 - 100 users?
100 - 1000 ?
Sendmail is supposed to be good for larger networks - although it works
just fine with four clients! - a little overkill maybe!
Hope this helps

I would have tought that all would be well
Are the Mac machines running AppleTalk or MacTCP.
If it is MacTCP, there should be no probs.
I think that Linux can talk to Macs though using other protocols such as
AppleTalk - although this is not something I have ever tried.
Try looking at the latest Kernel under Networking.

Don't use linuxconf! (OK - that was half serious. I dont use it.
I realise that many others may need to).
linuxconf gives you an option to "preview" what it is doing, when
you exit. Preview it, and - if the only thing it's doing is
changing the perms on pppd, then quit with activating the changes.
If there are other things it is going to do that you _want_ it to
do, let it do so. Then, from root, fix the permissions again.
And all this begs the question: how often are you running
linuxconf and why?
>i would like to know how to change the hardware acess manually (ie which
>files

/dev/modem is a symlink to something (usually /dev/ttyS0 or 1 or 2
or 3). It's that device you want to change. Also pppd - I
usually set it to suid root anyway.
That's all I can think of.

Yup, you don't need to compile if you are using rh6. If you can modprobe,
ifconfig and route it successfully the first time, all you need to do it to
manually modify your rc.local file so it will run the configuration
everytime it boots. I got my dlink working without going through the
complile kernel steps. =)

You could try changing the rwin - value in your windows box.
Start regedit , locate
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP
Create a new string called DefaultRcvWindow
doubleclick on it and set it to 4-8 times of your mtu (should be 1500). Just
try some values; however; you have to reboot every time...
This solves some similar problems; if it solves yours, please be so kind to
tell me.

Hi! I have a little problem and not *that* knowledge of
"c" ...
I have a subnet of approx. 10 Computers using win9x and one
Linux mailserver. The 10 workstations are using POP-3 for
incoming and the SMTP sendmail of the linux server
for outgoing mails. Now I want to store a copy of all
OUTgoing messages on the server. The SMTP software is
sendmail 8.9.2 (at the moment, but I can change the version).
Is there a solution available to solve this problem or
do I have to edit the sendmail sources for my own ?
Or would another SMTP software be a better solution? Maybe
fetchmail or something else ?
Thanks in advance ...

Did you compile a new kernel for your server?
In the latest version of a german linux magazine there is
a short report about how to set up diskless X-terminals.
They say, that you *have* to include the following
configurations in your kernel (f.ex. 2.2.1):
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RAM=y
...
CONFIG_IP_PNP=y
CONFIG_IP_PNP_BOOTP=y
...
CONFIG_NFS_FS=y
CONFIG_ROOT_NFS=y
After that you must add a special boot signature
to your zImage:
mknbi -k zImage -o bootimg -d /boot/root
zImage herein is the input, bootimg the output file
and /boot/root the NFS-root-directory. mknbi is part
of the etherboot packet.
You may find some additional informations at one of the
following adresses:
[Etherboot-Homepage]

Hope this could help ...

ipfwadm is the old program to control the masquerading. The
new program is called ipchains. I am using the old program
('cause I'm still running Linux 2.0.36). After compiling your
kernel you have to start the masquerading using ipfwadm or
ipchains or your other computers cannot access the new gateway.
I don't know how it works with the ipchains program, but in
my configuration I have added the following lines to my
/etc/init.d/rc.local
/sbin/depmod -a
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_ftp
/sbin/modprobe ip_masq_irc
[...and all the other ip_masq-packet you need]
ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm -F -a m 192.168.1.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0

Subject: multiple gateways

I have a home ethernet with 2 gateways to the Internet (one thru cable
modem, and the other ADSL). I would like my clients to be able to
fail over to the other route when the primary gateway fails. I can
achieve this easily on my Windows NT clients, by specifying the ADSL
gateway as the default gateway, and the CM one as "other gateways" in
the TCP/IP configuration. About 10 secs after the ADSL line goes
dead, NT automatically detects it and starts using the second line.
My question is what is the easiest way for me to achieve the same
result on my RedHat 5.2 linux client. As far as I can tell, it
doesn't let me specify 2 gateway IPs from the control-panel.
The other thing I have always wanted to do is, when both lines are up,
is it possible to multiplex outgoing packets alternately between the 2
gateways, so each line gets roughly half of the traffic?
Thanks very much for any help. Please cc our response to my email
address ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) as well.

Hi,
While trying to set up the dhcpcd client, I run across a
problem with my network card. Basically, I cannot get the
system to recognize it. I am using a 3Com 3c905B Cyclone
10BaseT card. The kernel (2.2.10) has been properly configed
to recognize this card, and it is on IRQ 11. The errors I am
getting are:
At bootup, I receive the error: Eth0: error fetching
interface information: device not found.
At shutdown, I get the error: Eth0Eth0 (it is shown twice):
Device not found.
Can anyone shed some light on this problem? I have the card
activated using Yast, and have the dhcpcd client properly
installed (or so I believe. No way to test it without having
access to the NIC).

AFAIK, this will only work with dial-on-demand. You need the cron script

where a card would get stuck transmitting. I have
to do an "ifconfig eth0 down" then an "ifconfig eth0 up"
to reinitialize the thing, after which I can ping
the interface. Has anyone seen this? When the Tx
light is blinking like crazy I can't ping the
interface. I'm not actually sure if it's transmitting
anything, but the light is blinking. Also, I can
still ping the interface (or IP of that interface)

Do you have the ones with the "digital 21140" chip or
the other chip (PNIC, may say "Linksys" on it)?
I've had various troubles with Netgear FA310TX cards
that had the PNIC chips, though the older DEC 21140
chip cards work fine. Some have said that updating
the tulip.c driver fixes some of the problems with
PNIC chip cards, though I was able to get it working
in only some cases.

It's important to have your CGI directory turned on. Take a look in the
httpd.conf or srm.conf or access.conf and make sure you have a directory
directive saying ExecCGI I think that's it. They're usually well annotated

It keeps loosing config options that I set - most noticably news
servers.
eg. I remove the default (news) and replace it with a real one
(news.domain.com). Five minuites or so later, the default (news) is
back as well as the real news server. The only cure I have found is to
manually edit the roaming access profile (liprefs) file - not exactly

Do you mean to allow connection to a news server via the linux box or do
you mean that you want to host newsgroups on your local machine whilst
pulling USENET from another news server?
I suggest Leafnode for a small network if the latter is what you
require. I have only had it a few days but it was quicker to install
than C-NEWS was and seems to use less bandwidth / system resources. This
will run a news server on port 119 that other linux / win? boxes can
connect to to read and post news.
If you want to talk to an existing news server - eg the one at your ISP,
your existing setup should allow you to talk via ipchains directly with
no modifications - providing your config permits.
I am basing this on the fact that it works fine both these ways here -
although I am runnig ipfwadm not ipchains - although I would have
thought that it should still work with ipchains - I may be wrong!

On my Slackware box it's /etc/mail/genericstable.db
Just a guess that it may at least be similar

Pick one of three choices
1. If you already have Apache installed, enable the proxy module
2. Download Squid - Best Webcache I have ever seen!
3. IP-Masquerading - My choice

You're wrong. Kget no longer exists. Now it's Caitoo. Other good X based
downloaders are Pavuk (a must, great tool for mirroring) and Downloader for X.

I'm looking for a solution to a "little" problem.
I need to do something to have 2 twin servers,1 master and 1 back-up.
Can i do something to have the back-up automatically upgraded everi time i
change something in the master one ???
there is a "simple" solution to have the back-up server directed connected
to the network enstead of the master in case it crash ????!!!!
Thank you
