Having problems connecting to internet using Kppp although it seems it
may be a problem with permissions. No problems connecting before I
compiled an SMP kernel. It connects OK but then hangs up after pppd
is started.
The following message is displayed by Kppp

pppd [242] : pppd 2.3.5 started by root, uid 0
pppd [242] : ioctl {PPPIOCGUNIT} : Operation not permitted {1}
pppd [242] : Hangup {SIGHUP}

Yes, just managed to fix it. Patch is at
http://pobox.com/~b.candler/software/patches/cipe-1.3.0-patch.gz

I have tested it between an Alpha and an Intel box, both running RH6.0

Note that you must ./configure --enable-idea

I've just set up a 100MHz Pentium with Linux and an ISA NE2000 clone. On the
other end is Win98 and an NE2000 PCI clone. They talk to each other over
TCP/IP just fine, but it is extremely slow.

An FTP transfer from the Linux box to Window is consistently around 7.3k
bytes per second. HELP! What is likely to be the culprit.

Perhaps I have the routing a bit strange... any ideas?

If yes, how??

Hi all

I'm using suse 6.1 with kernel 2.2.10. I wonder how to use the ipchains
in order to keep a couple of hosts out of my server. For ex. i know how
to deny some.domain.com, but how can i deny *.domain.com or, for say
*.com?

When I keep the encrypted passwords in my passwd map everything works fine.
As soon as I set the master up to use security/passwd.adjunct the linux

fine however.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Subject: Nameserving a DHCP-d network gives trouble
Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 10:11:11 GMT

Hello,

I am running the following setup: a LAN with Win95 boxes and 2 Linux boxes,
one of which runs Samba. The Win95 machines acquire their IP addresses via
dhcpd running on one of the Linux boxes. The OTHER Linux box should run a
nameserver for the whole domain. That's where the troubles begin.

There are 2 problems:

1. All Win95 machines can't find any other machine (Win95 & Linux) when the
domain name is attached to the hostname, i.e. they can find 'amachine', but
not 'amachine.on.network.nl'

2. The Linux machines can't find ANY machine, whether or not the domain name
is attached to the hostname. The Linux machines have static IP addresses. To
avoid the question: yes, it does work when tried by IP address.

Question: how should the DNS (on one of the Linux boxes) know the
hostname/IP-address combinations of all the machines when they are assigned
by dhcpd running on the other Linux box? Is this at all possible?

Thanks,

Thomer

Thank you for you kind answer, but I'm afraid I'm not willing to
install samba, just wanted make webserver in linux(it's already done!)
and client browser in win95 could connect the server.

the very basic requirement(connection between two computers) is not
fulfilled yet.

Why either machine can't see the other?

Further to my previous post... I am getting very slow transfers
(~7kbytes/sec) from linux to windows, but normal (>500kbytes/sec) from
windows to linux. This is surely a config problem.. right? But where?

One more hint: dmesg is reporting "ARP: arp called for own address" over and
over again.

OK, so what do I need to do to fix all this???? It all works, just slowly in

Subject: Re: PPP Connections filling up /var/log/messages
Date: 25 Jul 1999 21:47:50 -0500

I'm pretty sure this is caused by pppd link negotiation messages that get
into the serial line, are sent to the ISP, and then are sent back with
Protocol-Reject messages. I've seen other posts where kppp and pppd had
such a bad interaction. Upgrading to the latest kppp (I don't know the
latest or where to find it) and the latest pppd, ppp-2.3.8, found at

ftp://cs.anu.edu.au/pub/software/ppp/

should solve the problem. I don't know whether the ppp-pre-2.3.9 at
that site is stable or not but ppp-2.3.8 should be sufficient.

Even if you are not using kppp upgrading to ppp-2.3.8 may help since it
has more protection against previously opened serial lines.

See the in-line comments below for evidence that this or something close
to it is happening.

You ar probably running named or gated on your box ( Redhat seems to like setting
them up automatically). Unless you are running a large network on your
side of the phone link, don't run. them. You do not need them.
Change the S??named or S??gated in /etc/rc.d/rc?.d to K??named and K??gated
(or just rename /etc/rc.d/init.d/named and /etc/rc.d/init.d/gated to something else.)

Hi,
I can't ping to , or beeing pinged by other machines on a NT network..
Linux is working properly, (Mandrake 6.0), i have one Combo 3c509B installed
and recognized (it seems.. a ping to it's adress works) as eth0.

The network has a NT server, and every machine has a fixed adress (no DHCP),
in a single domain. There is no DNS installed.

The eth0 has IP= 192.1.1.29 (unique on LAN)
netmask = 255.255.255.0 (has all other computers on the LAN)
broadcast 192.1.1.255 running MTU.

when i run route, result is :
Dest Gateway Genmask Ind. Metric Ref Use Iface
192.1.1.29    *        255.255.255.255    UH    0    0    0    eth0

Strangely, when i Ping to 192.1.1.255, the answers comes from my card adress
!?

But when i ping to the main NT server, or any other computers, no result.

Could please somebody help me ???? WHat is wrong ??

Set the shell to a script you wrote:
--Name: /bin/sorry-and-away --------x----------x-------------x--------
#!/bin/sh
echo Sorry, not allowed to access ...
sleep 3
exit 1
============x========x==============x==========x=============x========

This has a big security problem, you may
ftp to the system and remove the .bash_profile or .login script.

Better is IMHO to check this in /etc/profile simular like this:

case "$USER" in
        not-allowed)
                echo Hey $USER, go away, no login for you\!
                sleep 5
                logout
                exit 1
                kill -6 $$
        ;;
        *)
                echo Welcome $USER
        ;;
esac

Good Luck

Try downloading a program called Astec-x. This is called an x-server and
will run on your winX machine. You then need to type "xdm" on your linux
machine.
