If you have a RedHat system, you should be setting the host name in
/etc/sysconfig/network.

It is likely there is a problem in your .xsession file. Look for
a .xsession-errors file in your home directory.

The IP address is associated with the interface that you use to
connect to the cable modem. Run ifconfig to see whether it's what
you expect.

Cliff,

Thanks for replying, it helps. One quick follow-up question:
When you say 'interface', are you meaning the ethernet card?

for example:
[...but I suspect that it wants you to assign a static, non-private IP to the
interface between your LAN and the Internet at large. The private IP is then
assigned to the LAN interface.]

Thanks again,
John Brashier

Hi!

I have a problem with netatalk 1.4b2+asun2.1.1 on Debian 2.1. Every time I
connect from a Mac client to the server it works for about 5-10 minutes,
then the Clients says "Connection to fileserver is lost". After that I can
reconnect normally but the same error occurs again after some time.

Anybody here who has an idea where I shall look for the error?

hi. i installed the 2.2... kernel (SUSE dirtribution) now, because i
need
linux for a file server for
sgi-irix machines. they need file locking over nfs for some resons. this

is supported by NFS3
only. so, the knfsd should support knfsd. but it don't seem so. i can't
mount nfs3 on the irix
computers and when i use make, i get answers as

At end of source: error(1513): Makedepend error: fcntl (Makedepend) : No

locks available

so, do i have to enable nfs3? did i do something wrong? any idea? or do
you know a
documentetion for the knfsd?

It's a domain request (i.e. DNS look up). It comes from 127.0.0.2
which, presumably, is what you using for a local IP address on the
link when it is down so it is something on the local machine doing
the look up. Every 10-15 mins is typical of the frequency that
Windows machines generate queries for their workgroup name. Probably
this query is getting picked up by samba which is then trying to
satisfy it by querying DNS. The simplest way of "fixing" it is
to use the samba config option that turns off forwarding queries
to DNS (it's in the man page, dns something-or-other). The best
way of fixing it is to run a name server that is authoritative
for the local domain so that you can fail bogus queries locally
rather than bouncing yet another query for "WORKGROUP" off the,
already overloaded, root nameservers.

when samba is setup properly NT sees all shares on linux and vice
versa. This allows you to use your explorer on linux dirs same as
wins.

I prefer to set my winboxs to map on demand, that allows you to see
the shares names on explorer and such, but only maps them when you
click on those. That way if the machine with the shares isn't online
when the winbox boots it won't hang waiting to map that share.

WEll actually you have a good idea IMHO. Write the script as you say,
have it mv files to /recycle, but the way I would do it if I wanted
it global and automatic is simply rename the script to rm and place it
in /bin (after renaming the old rm to rm.old or something). Then all
you have to do is periodically empty the recycle with the rm.old in
fact even that could be automated with chron.

you will have to live with that. Besides if your user is so stupid

I think when you ping a certain address, the system makes its decision
"to which ethernet card or other 'interface' shall I send the ping
packet" by referring to the routing table (route -n). There, it finds
an interface that corresponds to the target address and sends the
packet there, or it doesn't and reports that the target is
"unreachable." See if the contents of your routing table help explain
ping behavior you observe.

your problem seems to be a missing DNS nameserver. you should have a small
file in /etc called resolv.conf with the IP addresses of your primary and
(optional) secondary nameservers

If both cards are defined on the same network (10.1.1.1 and 10.1.1.2 for
example) the IP stack under Linux uses the first interface it finds. So if
you say ping 10.1.1.3 interface eth0 will be used, if that is unavailable it
will use eth1. Now (almost) by definition a router connects multiple
networks together. What is the LAN layout you are trying to setup ? Do you
have a LAN and WAN connections ? Or two LANs ? Or are you trying to
something completely different ?

Subject: 40Sec Delay When FTP gets the USER on MASQ:ed machines
Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 08:44:12 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi fellow Linux-dudes !

I have searched a bunch of mailing-lists and the web otherwise but no
one has reported this before.

I have the following on a slackware linux-box:

kernelversion 2.0.35
ipfwadm 2.3.0
ipautofw 2.0.0
NT Workstations 4

FTPservers i tried this with on the NT 4 Wks:
warftpd 1.7b
serv-u 2.4
vermillion 1.23

Anything else that is releveant in this mather, please get back to me.

The problem is when i use ipautofw to forward all traffic on ports 20
21 (FTP) from a machine behind either Gauntlet firewall (NT 4 Server)
or another linuxbox with a more recent kernel than mine and also with
ipchains installed instead of ipfwadm, to one of my internal machines
there is a 40 second delay after the USER has been sent to the
FTP-server.

When a friend of mine connects to the FTP-server there is no delay,
and he is not behind a firewall.

If i connect to his FTPserver (servu2.4) from behind the Gauntlet
firewall (NT 4 server) or the otherlinuxbox with newer stuff than mine
there is no delay.

After that 40 seconds (at the time all of the FTP-servers i have tried
is really frozen on my NT Wks) the speed is perfect but it is really
annoying - and something most be seriously wrong.

I have given myself the thought of upgrading the kernel to 2.0.36 but
is that what i need ?

Im no guru yet on linux-networking stuff so is it any basic-things i
have missed out on - DNS or alike....

Thanks for any reply.

Have a nice cold day

I've had Linux detect two PCI Ethernet cards. I have heard that some of
this stuff has changed from the 2.0.x to the 2.2.x kernels, though (I've
used 2.2.x kernels with my 2-card box). Could you be encountering this?

If you're asking for a practical reason (you must get it working), you
could try using modules and add appropriate lines to /etc/conf.modules.

Subject: DNS keeping connection open - HELP!
Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 14:43:08 +0200

I really hope you can help me out on this one. I'm running Bind 8 on a
RedHat6.0 Linux machine. I have set up DNS by the book; at first a
caching server, and later I created my fictious domain waars.com. I have

a ISDN dialup connection to my ISP and put my ISP's DNS servers in the
Options/forwarders section of my /etc/named.conf file. Everything works;

sendmail, lookups, reverse lookups, internet access.
Before I used DNS, I had the ISP's DNS IP addresses in the resolv.conf
file and propagated the address through DHCP. If someone on my home-net
selected an address on the internet, the Linux box (using masquerading)
would dial out and resolve the name. After 3 minutes of inactivity, the
link would go down. I have set up Linux as to not dial out during peak
(expensive) hours, but only between 20:00 and 8:00. Since I have DNS
enabled, as soon as it becomes 20:00h, Linux opens the connection and
never shuts down, even if there are no other PC's active on the network.

Looking at the interface with TCPDUMP shows continuous traffic to/from
my ISP's DNS servers, but also from the root servers (probably from the
hints file). Why does it do that? And more important: How do I stop it?
Can I use (fake) home domain and internet access at the same time, or is

it mutual exclusive? Of course I can solve it by manually taking the
link up or down, but I want this to be transparent (as it was before I
introduced DNS on my 5-PC home LAN). Help!!!

Frank
