Hi,
I try to install a Linux-machine as a IP and IPX-Router for a mixed
Ethernet and TokenRing network. The IP-Routing works fine, but the IPX
Routing didn't work. I've configured both cards for IPX and started
ipxd. After a few seconds I can see the found IPX-Networks under
/proc/net/ipx_route and I can mount a Novell-Volume from my Linux
machine, but when I try to access the Novell-Server from a machine
connect via Ethernet it didn't see any Novell Servers.
Is there anyone who has allready succesfully configured a IPX-Router for
Routing from Ethernet to TokenRing?

I am looking for the location of the latest de4x5 driver (including test
versions). Already looked at the source, but there is no listing for
where an updated driver is located. The one I have in the kernel is
0.543 (1998/12/30) as distributed with RH6.....

I thought of this, too, but will samba use the new rm-script? This would work
well if you work locally on the server, but does it work over SMB-network?

Subject: mount -o noac broken in RH6.0
Date: 27 Jul 1999 04:41:40 GMT
We have several RedHat systems ranging from RH5.2 with a 2.0.36 kernel to
RH6.0 with a 2.2.5 kernel. We use the noac option on all of our nfs mounts
because otherwise it takes way too long for the xfm (or Files) file manager
to update the display when a file is dragged from one window to another.
(And we don't even want to think about the nasty things that happen when you
mix attribute caching with e-mail.)
On our RedHat 5.2 systems things work fine when we set the noac option
in our NFS mounts. On our RedHat 6.0 systems the noac option seems to
be ignored. Attributes are cached even with noac set. We have to
also set actimeo=0 to get things to work correctly on the 6.0 systems.
Does anyone know anything about this?

Smart Reseller: Sun/Netscape alliance retreats on Linux
Jul 27, 1999, 15:46 UTC (13 Talkbacks) (Other stories by Ben Elgin)
"What promise? The partners balk at making Linux a critical platform
for its server wares."
"Balking at a long-time promise to make Linux a critical platform for
its server wares, the Sun Microsystems Inc.-Netscape Alliance will
upgrade the Netscape Application Server (NAS) next month--without a
Linux port."
"The pending NAS 4.0 release marks the product's last major upgrade
before it is fused with Sun's NetDynamics next year."
"Netscape executives have publicly stated since July of last year that
open-source Linux would be a critical platform for its server products
going forward. But, now, several months after America Online Inc.
(NYSE:AOL) purchased Netscape and dealt its server software to Sun
Microsystems (Nasdaq:SUNW), the Linux app server port has been put on
the back burner."
"'Linux is fun, it definitely has a cool factor... but it isn't one of
the operating environments that our customers are asking for,' says
Roseanna Marchetti, senior product marketing manager of the Alliance's
app server products. Marchetti, who notes that the Netscape directory
and messaging servers were ported to Linux in March, says an
app-server port could come if enterprise demand rises."

Well, you can't use the same IO address for two seperate cards. This
could be the root of the problem. But, have you tried compiling this
driver into the kernel? This way the kernel can take care of some of the
ugly details and it requires less work. There are some other issues
then, but these are more easily resolved and are detailed in various
HOWTO's. Good luck.

is there a way to use the both at the same time. to say... balance the

I'm running squid for internet access for my WinBlows users. I bacially
want to know if I can add bandwidth without going to an ISDN or whatnot.
Any Ideas / Suggestions / Flames???

Subject: Help! Forwarding FTP connections to hosts behind firewall doesn't work.
Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 17:04:38 +0000
Hi, and thanks for reading this message.
Here is my situation:
I have a Linux RH6 firewall with 2.2.10 kernel and masqueraded internal
network (192.168.1.0/24). What I'm trying to do is to access FTP server
on the internal HP box from the outside of the firewall.
I tried ipmasqadm portfw and redir with no success. Well, with partial
success - I can ftp from command line just fine, but it doesn't work
from any graphical client. Neither with active nor with passive ftp.
With active I can see directory listings, however there's no file
transfer possible - it times out.
With passive I can't even see directory listings. The results are the
same with both ipmasqadm portfw module and redir.
I tried this with various internal ftp hosts, the same thing.
Any help would be appreciated, so as references to relevant
documentation. Since manuals for those packages are not more then a
couple of lines, they aren't really helpful.
Please don't suggest me to install ipmasq ftp module, I have no problem
with outgoing ftp connections, just with the incoming.
Thanks

I'm in the same (2 PCs, 2NICs, Hub) and "ping doesn't work!", since January,
with no success yet!!!
Tried the HOW TOs, bought three books, tried the two Web Sites mentioned
above, no luck yet.
All their tests work apart from the ones you try to get win95 to talk to
linux and vice versa.
I want to use samba (1.9.18) first; the rest will follow, I'm sure...
Hardware is ok. The linux bx is dual boot win95/linux.
So when I use Win95 on both PCs everything is fine, ping, shares, printing,
the lot.
When I use Win95 and Linux as a samba server, nothing works.
When i'm lucky, I even get to see the Linux on network neighbours, but at
the same time I cannot browse and cannot ping.
Yet, if I update the samba server comment, I'll even get the new comment,
but still no ping no browsing. (Weird or what?)
If I do "ping 192.168.1.2 ( i.e. Win95)" from Linux, even the leds of both
PCs will flash, but there will be no response on the screen! (?)
>And I would add that you might have to take a NE2000 isa-pnp nic out

a. My 3com 509 is a pnp card but doesn't seem to use isapnp at the moment (I
haven't set it up), but the
card is initialised properly, and there are flashing lights on the hub when
I ping etc.
Do i still need to disable pnp?
b. You mean Full duplex disabled on both NICs (Win95 + Linux)?

Nope.

I will try this later today...

you mean the '/usr/sbin/tcpdump arp' should show that the
Linux box was receiveing a request but
>(And you only need tcp/ip on the win side. netmask 255.255.255.0 on
>both sides? Does it help to fiddle with routing?)
>
>The other way, 'route', 'arp' and 'traceroute' is there for you.
I even managed to set up a caching DNS on the linux box, but no luck.
Both PCs seem to be working just fine on their own. They just don't like
each other...:-)
Have setup hosts, lmhosts (on both PCs), networks, runned gated, named,
routed, just in case...
Any more hints?
It seems that it has to be something very basic, like a switch or
something...which I don't have a clue about...
By the way route, traceroute, tracert, (haven't tried arp yet) don't work
when it from one system to the other...

I am not absolutely sure, but looking at DNS HOWTO, I guess it is
required by
"named" in order to search for some database. May be used by other

I don't have much help to offer beyond saying that for me XWin32 worked
fine up to RH5.0. As of RH5.1 I have not been able to start up the
connection from the Windows side (the XWin Message log says 'Connection
refused'). So I assume it is something about the way linux/rsh or what
