Edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
You are actually configuring your "eth0" adaptor, not your "inet".
Here's one of my machines':
DEVICE=eth0
IPADDR=192.168.4.2
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=192.168.4.0
BROADCAST=192.168.4.255
ONBOOT=yes
Also, you might put additional information in /etc/sysconfig/network, like your
gateway, hostname and domain.

We have changed every file I can find, in every configuration I know about.
We are using bind-8.1.2. How do I get the machine to use DNS when it can't
find it in /etc/host.

Others have already suggested using an aliased interface. One other
option is a multi-port NIC. Here's a URL to one such NIC:
http://necxdirect.necx.com/hai/prod_page.html?key=0000128041&nonce=guest
It's pricey ($260), but in some cases might be worth it. I'm told there
are other such boards, but I don't have URLs offhand. There are also some
products that combine a NIC and some other function (such as SCSI) into
one board, so you might be able to use one of those. Here's a URL for one
such beast:

Hmm, I didn't do anything too impressive. If your looking for a HOW-TO

I was lucky. All I did was follow his instructions, plug it in and it
worked. Go figure.

trying to connect to a shiva lanrover from linux [redhat 5.2, 2.0.36]
I saw a discussion in comp.os.linux.networking, that diverted to
m$-shiva install problems, so I hereby start a new [2] thread.
I do not only have to connect to a shiva box, but need to get the box to
callback too.
without the callback there seems no problem with a time-generated token,
so there is a password [6 digits] to put in pap-secrets.
-i first had a challenge-response token that used a 4-digit challenge
from the shiva box from which the token generate a 6-digit response, i
couldnot get that to work-
using pppd 2.3.8 with cbcp [callback] gives auth errors:
with pap: "dialin disabled"
with chap: auth failed
although the username password succeed with minicom, no shell account,
no dialback ...
someone any hint, please react.

To use lilo this way you need drivers in kernel. I dont belive you
have. I guess you use modules. And that is fine. So remove the line
in lilo an rerun.
>I'm sure this is a newbie question, but how do I add the second card to
>my list
>of available devices?
You could compile a kernel and use the lilo aproach. More easy is to
use linuxconf (if you dont mind) and set up 'adaptor 1' and 'adaptor
2'. Nr one (eth0, the pci-nic) to use ne without any values on irq
and i/o and the second (eth1 isa-nic) also ne with irq 9 and I/O
0x340.
If it works, fine.
If not, look at /etc/conf.modules and check if there is any trick to
have two ne-modules.
If they use the same driver, or need different drivers to load.
The ethernet-howto:
As an example, consider a user that has two ISA NE2000 cards,
one at 0x300 and one at 0x240 and what lines they would have in
their /etc/conf.modules file:
alias eth0 ne
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0x240,0x300
(but, dont know if the 'ne' is for both, that is what linuxconf chose
to do. The pci-nic dont need the 'io=' value, i think. But if it
dont hurt..)
I'm note sure if this make sense:
alias eth0 ne
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0,0x340 irq=0,15
If you got the I/O value on the pci-nic, maybee fill in *** and skip
the 'irq=' like this:
alias eth0 ne
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0x***,0x340
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/misc/modules.html
(You might (dont know) use this for the pci-nic:
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/ne2k-pci.html)
The isa NE2000, is that a isa-pnp nic? Then it may have the pnp
turned off, look for setup on the nic.

I had Netatalk up and running with everything configured. Then (who
knows why) I loaded the script provided at
http://thehamptons.com/anders/netatalk created by Johnathan Benson
called atalk-sysv. After doing that, Appletalk will no longer enable at
boot. The server says:
Appletalk 0.17 for linux Net 3.035
Starting Appletalk Services:
atalkd nice: atalk:no such file or directory
/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S79atalk:nbprgstr: command not found
/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S79atalk:nbprgstr: command not found
/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S79atalk: [: =: unary operator expected
Any ideas? I am a newbie at this, sorry if it is a dumb question, I
have looked over all the config files I can find and the nbprgstr file
exists at /usr/local/atalk/bin/nbprgstr. Any help is appreciated.

I think you need to pass the parameters for both cards to the driver
module. If you look in the file /usr/doc/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO, it contains
an entire section on exactly how to configure two Ethernet cards in one
machine. Your append line isn't right, BTW, the kernel options should be
something like:
ether=<parameters for eth0>,eth0 ether=9,340,eth1

In my 'dmesg' there's a line just above the 'eth0' setup that
indicates 'PCI BIOS has not enabled this device'
If that's correct, why does boot indicate eth0 is up OK ?? Pinging
my net address works, but appears to be a local function (?) in that
hub led's never indicate activity.
Card address. node interrupt, and irq are recorded correctly
Getting RH6 to recognize this SOHOWARE FastEthernet card is a real
pain in the ass !! The tulip 0.89 driver appears ok, would upgrading
the kernel be of any help in fixing the bios ?? Current = 2.2.5-15
How/where can I reconfigure the bios?
At this point don't know if I'm more stubborn or stupid as it'd been
much cheaper and easier to upgrade Windoz . . . . .

Wait, your machine is the DNS server for you? (aside- do you really need
your own DNS server?)
Nslookup will be querying your DNS tables.
Either order will work in your hosts.conf file, but you probably want
"hosts, bind" to speed up locally resolvable names such as non-FQDN hosts.
What does your /etc/resolv.conf file look like? Sounds like you don't have
a "nameserver" entry in there. That's what I would check.
when you try to ping stuff, are you using the fully-qualified domain name or
just a hostname? Can you ping by IP address?

You have to update some programs too, e.g. the net-tools package. Read
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes for further details.

I use 905Bs with no problem (10 servers, two in each one for redundancy).
Make sure you compile the 590/905 Vortex stuff into the kernel. It seems
more stable in the actual kernel than as a module, by the way. Don't have
any empirical evidence, just a gut feeling.
Actually, you probably want to check out Donald Becker's driver site (can't
remember the URL); he's the networking device driver guru that wrote the
supplied Vortex drivers and most of the other ones too. The main
difference (for folks like you and me!) between the 905 and the 905B is that
the 905B doesn't have a particular transceiver on it, so the standard 905
driver can sometimes misinterpret the registers (they're not in the same
spot basically).
Don has a special driver for the 905Bs (Cyclone chipset) that you basically
just copy into your kernel source, then you remake your kernel and/or
modules to use the new driver.
But, the standard 590 Vortex driver should work just fine, at least for
basic crap.
Make sure you have "Plug and Play OS" turned off in the Bios, and you may
want to manually set the 905B card to the settings you want using the
supplied dos-based 3C90X.exe config utility.
Last word of warning. The 3com 90x cards have a pretty fair history of NOT
playing nicely with other devices, so don't share an IRQ if you can avoid
it.

Subject: Printing from RH5.2 to Appletalk printers with netatalk???
Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 18:19:30 -0700
I have recently converted to Linux for my office PC and I'm trying to
get things to an equivalent operational level as they were with NT 4.0.
Specifically, I'm trying to set up network printers (or access to
network printers) that are from Apple. I've downloaded and installed
"netatalk" and it seems to be working fine but only for postscript print
files. I'm using StarOffice 5.0 as an Office 97 replacement but files
saved from here are definitely not postscript. Therefore, when I try
the command line print of a doc created in StarOffice, the process craps
out talking about offending postscript commands or something close to
that.
Has anyone else tried this solution?? The Apple printers cannot be
assigned an IP address as they are older Laserwriter printers. I'm
trying to use netatalk to access them over Appletalk. The OS is RH
5.2. Thanks for your help.

Peter,
I have no trouble connecting to secure web sites. I am using
Netscape 4.51 with Slackware 4.0. Are you running a firewall? If so,
you will need to open port 443.
