I would strongly de-recommend any M$ product for the gateway,
particularly the 'residential' strength 98 SE (whatever SE means,
probably like 98 is to 95...bug fixes and much needed features)

If you were to use a M$ product, NT server (even ws) would be the only
choice as a stable(ish) gateway, and NOT 98!

I'd personally, and do, use a Linux box as a gateway, also acting as a
firewall. It's faster (I've tried the experiment using Wingate on '98
vs Linux) it's more reliable (under linux my box stays up for weeks on
end, in '98 it tends to crash in under 2 days without fail) and it's a
LOT more secure (IMHO) if setup correctly (IE accepting NO connections
from outside world.. paranoia etc and no/very little risk of 'back
doors' like back orifice etc...)

The pig that linux is to setup (IMO) reflects the fact that no monkey
could break it.

Then for your NT 4 box, setup the TCP/IP protocol to use the box as
it's 'default gateway'. That's it, it's really that easy. I can't
remember how right now, I'm in MCSE training atmo... so pls ask if
you're stuck I'll take a look. (I'm booted in '98 now - it's got nice
newsreaders setup - so cant' check.. NT won't share my fat32
partition)

Good luck, and may the schwartz errr source be with you.

If you want help, from an amateur admittedly, please feel free to
email/post.. I check often now and hope to pass on some of the
knowledge I have gained from using this excellent newsgroup to solve
my own networking nightmares....

It can. Try something like ftp://username:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
For example ftp://anonymous:[EMAIL PROTECTED]@ftp.funet.fi

Password is optional. You get password prompt when password is not given:
ftp:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am currently using "ipmasqadm" to access an Exchange server sitting on my
local LAN behind the linux box which is also configured with IPCHAINS for
internet access. I currently "portfw" ports 80 and 110. I have included a
cut/paste from shell scripts that I developed with relevant info that should
help you get started in the right direction.

NOTE: RH6.0 comes with the required modules needed for ipmasqadm operation,
but for some reason they did not include the ipmasqadm command <groan>. You
will have to download and compile ipmasqadm.

Hope this helps

The IPs are really in a range 192.1.1.1 to 192.1.1.255.. but it will be
changed to 192.168.x.y once i have solved my problems with Linux... <s>

It is completely silent.. (or it seems, once i quit with Ctrl+C, 0 received
and 0 transmitted packets.. But do i have to run or ping something during
tcpdump ?)

this displayed me only the previous pinged adresses (192.1.1.1) at

so i added my interface : "arp -s 192.1.1.29 <HWadress of card> pub"
It worked, and then arp -a showed me my machine name and domain, with the

But still pinging is not over network, in both sides

Soundcard is not installed, SCSI does not exist, boot is not PNP and the IRQ

(all this i had to make last week, because the card was completely not
recognized...)

To "browse" Linux from Windows NT, you'll need either
  a) Samba on the Linux system, and
"Client for Microsoft Networks" on the NT, or
  b) NFS on the Linux system, and
an NFS Client on the NT
The easiest/cheapest is the Samba/"Client for Microsoft Networks" solution

To "browse" Windows NT from Linux, you'll need either
  a) SMBFS support on the Linux system and the SMBMOUNT/SMBCLIENT programs from Samba,
"File and Print Sharing" on the NT, or
  b) the standard Linux tools, and an NFS server on the NT
The easiest/cheapest is the SMBFS/smbmount/smbclient/"File and Print Sharing" solution

Check out http://www.samba.org/ for the Samba distribution, and read the "SMB Howto"
documentation at the Linux Documentation Project for some installation tips.

I ran into a problem with RH 6.0 stalling on TCP connections to web
servers running Linux. It turned out to be a problem with the kernel's
TCP SACK support. TCP connections would sometimes stall after a dropped
packet and never recover.

I added the following to /etc/rc.d/rc.local:

echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_sack

This disables SACK and fixed the problem.

If you could pass along any info, or point me in the correct direction

Subject: ppp - ping OK but no telnet/ftp/netscape - answer.
Date: Wed, 28 Jul 1999 12:00:11 GMT

I all,

For the past few days I have struggled with the problem that I have
been able to dial in to my ISP, start ppp successfully, and ping to any
other machine, but I have been unable to telnet, ftp or use netscape.
I'm using RH6.0 and ppp 2.3.7.

When I attempt to telnet I get :

telnet fred.net.nl
Trying xxx.xxx.xx.xx...
Connected to fred.net.nl.
Escape character is '^]'.

and then it stops there - no login prompt.

Same for ftp, and using netscape I get

Connect: Host www.his.com contacted. Waiting for reply...

and we wait forever.

I was unable to solve the problem even after reading the PPP-HOWTO,
scanning the network administrators guide, and reading the many
hundreds of postings on this and other linux newsgroups.

I have stumbled onto the solution for my case:

To solve my problem I needed to change the following line in my
/etc/ppp/ppp-on script:

Original (as from the PPP-HOWTO):
REMOTE_IP=0.0.0.0 # Remote IP address if desired. Normally 0.0.0.0

New:
REMOTE_IP=xxx.xxx.xx.xx # where xxx.xxx.xx.xx is the IP address of my
ISP.

I know this is trivial, and I should have spotted it before, but it
doesn't seem to be mentioned in the PPP-HOWTO. The HOWTO says "delete
the line that says $LOCAL_IP:$REMOTE_IP \" but I have tried that and it
doesn't seem to work.

Also I know that the pppd man page says that the above can be omitted,
but when _I_ omit it ppp doesn't work:

OPTIONS
 <local_IP_address>:<remote_IP_address>
Set the local and/or remote interface IP addresses.
Either one may be omitted. The IP addresses can be
specified with a host name or in decimal dot nota-
tion (e.g. 150.234.56.78). The default local
address is the (first) IP address of the system
(unless the noipdefault option is given). The
remote address will be obtained from the peer if
not specified in any option. Thus, in simple
cases, this option is not required. If a local
and/or remote IP address is specified with this
option, pppd will not accept a different value from
the peer in the IPCP negotiation, unless the ipcp-
   accept-local and/or ipcp-accept-remote options are
   given, respectively.

If I have missed something obvious then please tell me, however it what
I'm saying is correct I hope it helps some other struggling souls.

interface means any "network device" that your linux kernel can send/receive
packets on:
eg
Ethernet (eth0, eth1,....)
PPP (ppp0, ppp1,....)

These are the most common.

Subject: Linux ---> MS Proxy 2.0?

Hi all,

My company (an MS-company unfortunately) has installed MS Proxy Server 2.0
recently on our network and since then I cannot get out to the Internet
anymore on my Linux box (I am the only one running it at the office). I'll
give the current config to make things clear...

To the outside:
MS Proxy server: ns.wibb.nl (193.172.213.130)

Inside:
We use 192.168.10.x as internal network called ipintern.nl. So my IP is
192.168.10.150 known as Martijn.ipintern.nl
The gateway is same PC as the proxy, to the internal network known as
192.168.10.1
The DNS server is another PC, to the inside of the firewall known as
192.168.10.2

So under Linux I can reach all adresses inside the network, I can do DNS
query's on both adresses in- and outside the network but I cannot open any
internet pages outside. I did configure netscape and lynx for proxy but that
doesn't seem to work out. I was wondering if it is even possible to get
outside - isn't this just another nice MS trick forcing ppl to use Windows?

Any help appreciated,

Martijn Coenen

Most of this stuff is in the how-to pages (PPP, and IP_MASQ).
First, get your linux box pinging the internet.
Then make sure linux is recognizing the second nic.
Then get ip masquerading running.
Then try and get another machine use your gateway.

It sounds to me like you have a badly broken ISP. Seeing the output
of the debug option of ppp might help determine exactly how your ISP is broken,
but if your system now works, that would be of academic interest only.
You might tell people who you ISP is however so that ISP can be avoided.
