OK. I've found that the automount daemon is part of the am-utils
package and have read the files under /usr/doc/am-utils*. This is still
a puzzle, but I now have narrowed the problem down. Only HP-UX 9.01
systems have this "readdir reply truncated" error. HP-UX 10.20 systems
work correctly. There appears to be some compatibility between these
particular OS versions. Directory size is irrelevant.

Hi,
does anybody have experience with the 3Com Megahertz 3CCFEM556B
56k modem 10/100 nic? I found it on the supported pcmcia cards list as:
[3c574_cs driver: has performance problems]
3Com Megahertz 3CCFEM556B
but I also saw in the 3.0.12 and 3.0.13 driver release notes:
"I think I've fixed all remaining problems with the 3c589 and 3c574
transceiver monitoring code"
the supported cards list is older than the driver release notes, but I would
like to hear from someone who has one or has tried one.
TIA for any replys

Good day all!
I've run into this situation: one of my friends wants to use some sort of
proxy/ip masq solution for his company to share one internet account. They are
currently using WinProxy (www.winproxy.com), but would like to switch to
something a little more robust.
I use Linux as an ip masq solution at home. I'd like to do that for him, but
i've got some questions. He has ONE pop account and his ISP forwards all mail
to his domain to that account. (Example: if his domain is xyz.com, mail sent
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] will go to that one pop account.) Is it possible to split
up that one pop email account into several different ones upon reciept of the
email, or is he SOL and will have to get more accounts.
Secondly, I've read the howto's on setting up a Linux box as a proxy. Any
caveats I should look out for? Minimum system requirements? (I know enough
not to use a winmodem!) Provided the machine has the NIC and modem that are on
the "supported" list, what else should I be looking for?
Thanks in advance...

Date: 28 Jul 1999 20:17:48 GMT
Good day all!
I'm using the @Home network. For whatever reason, my provider gives me a new
IP address every day (or every other day or whatever). My Linux box (RH 6.0,
2 NICs, 64mb ram, AMD K6-2 350) is acting as a IP Masq/forwarding box for my
house and when they change the IP it no longer forwards any traffic. I can
ping the new address from another PC on the network, but I can't get past it.
Is there anything I should be doing? Is there another way to refresh my route
tables automatically? (All the other computers inside my network use the
internal NIC as their gateway).
Anyone with ideas?
Thanks in advance.....

Good question. I've used ISP erols with linux, and it went pretty well.
They don't support linux, but by following the newsgroups, etc. was able
to do it myself. A couple of linux devotees in linux support there
helped a little, but you gotta stumble upon them.
How about ADSL providers? I'm looking at BellAtlantic and Flashcom in
Morristown, New Jersey area. Any experieces/comments to share. Thanks.

hi steve
I have no problem -anymore- with connecting from linux to a shiva
lanroverbox, using a time-generated-key [6 digits] that I put in
pap-secrets just before dialing the lanrover.
[using pppd-2.3.8]
its not very difficult to use a perlscript and a browser to make the
process of changing the password [key] in pap-secrets, so you can
connect from a lan to the shiva.
I do have problems to get the shiva to callback,
with pap it only sais: "dialin disabled" and thats all, even the modem
connect stays up, so I have to kill pppd by hand.
in win95 I dont need any -shiva- software to connect and to be called back,
works smoothly, aaawh...

I have seen 2 types of secure-id cards:
1) challenge-response key, get a 4 digit challenge from the server and use
that key to generate a 6-digit response as password,
in windows you need shiva software for this.
in linux you could use "expect" but its no fun.
2) time-generated 6-digit key usable as password, see above

Is there anyone out there who would be willing to:

I've tried all kinds of things, but nothing to date has been effective.

I don't know that the Access Workgroup Admin tool suggested in a
previous post let's you determine how MANY people can connect
concurrently...
This is probably an issue of locking mechanisms. You might want to
look into file locking. While writing this, I checked out the Samba
options via the web interface, Swat, and there are several that look
like they might affect how locking works. In fact, there's a section
labeled "Locking Options". You probably should check this out.
Using a web browser, check out the URL http://linuxhost:901 , where
linuxhost is the host that you are trying to get to work. Login as
root.
Good luck!

Subject: VPN using Linux
Date: Wed, 28 Jul 1999 15:26:40 -0700
I am researching using Linux firewalls to set up a VPN between two
remote LANs over the Ineternet. I would also like to use this same
setup to establish VPNs with remote Win95 clients (like laptops, etc).
These clients would connect to their ISP through a local dial-up PPP,
then establish their VPN link to the corporate LAN. I am currently
using ipfwadm (kernel 2.0) for my firewalls, and would like to avoid
having to upgrade to IPChains (kernel 2.2) if possible, but if necessary
I can do this. My LAN-ISP links will be 1.1M DSL connections (1.1M
upstream and downstream for both LANs). I don't think this is anything
new, I just need some direction to get started.
1) What would be the best way to go, IPSec or PPTP, in terms of
interoperability?
2) What are the tradeoffs between the two in terms of a) ease of use;
b) ease of configuration; c) reliability; d) performance?
3) Does anyone know where I can get free/cheap Win95 client software
that will enable my Win95 clients to connect to the "VPN Server"? My
understanding is that Win98 comes with built-in PPTP support, but what
about Win95? Is there a patch or something that I need to support this
functionality? What about Win95 and IPSec?
4) Are there any performance issues with trying to run a VPN over DSL
that anyone is aware of (other than traditional Internet-related
performance issues)? I have seen some complaints in the newsgroups
about performance with DSL/VPN, but I would like to hear more details.
I have read quite a bit about this in the last few days, but I would
love to hear specifics from anyone who has actually done it (VPN). I am
leaning towards IPSec, but I am not sure if my Windoze clients will
support such a setup. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings,
So far, setting up linux hasn't been THAT big of a task. First off, I
managed to get through my instalation fairly successfuly, and then realized
xfree86 doesn't like to start with an ATI rage 128 card... anyway, I setup
the trial of accelerated x, and everything worked wonderfully. SO.. next
order of business was to setup the network.. I'm using a Cisco 675 in PPP
mode... Well, I was able to find somebody to help in #linux_help on efnet,
and was told that to setup my cisco as he default gateway, to use the
command:
"route add default gw 10.0.0.1 netmask 0.0.0.0 dev eth0 metric 1"
however upon executing that command, I was told "network unreachable"..
icky... Well I was hoping somebody could help me out a lil bit... I read a
thread before that a FAQ was being assembled, and was wondering if anybody
had seen it? The only bit of evidence I have as to my progress in getting
it to work is that when I click ACTIVATE under network control panel on the
ethernet device I see some local network traffic on the router... any help
would be appreciated..
