You are a lifesaver!!!
I was having a problem with a new ethernet driver on a machine, and changing
the MTU to 1000 fixed all the wierd problems I was having with network
access! Thanks!
> 5) change the MTU of my machine to 500. (ifconfig eth0 mtu 500)
Now my questions is, how do I set the MTU to default to 1000 at startup?
Don't want to enter that line every time I boot!

Mark:
I have the same problem. No answer yet, but at least we can commiserate.
We're using our linux box as a router with IP masquerade for internet
access for a small group of Win9x and NTWS PCs at home. I've seen (in the
system log) our v.90 modem stay connected as long as 2 hours, usually
much shorter, but almost always at least 30 minutes. PPP automatically
reconnects and all is good again for another 30 minutes or more, but it's
a nuisance.
The 30-minute periodicity is very suspicious, isn't it. I've wondered
whether it's my ISP (also linux based) that cuts us off due to lack of
activity, but haven't asked them. The line cuts out very rarely when were
actively using it. The cutouts mostly (but not always) occur when the
traffic is idle for a while. I've thought about using software to maintain
a low level of intermittent traffic going but haven't gotten around to
trying it. Think I've seen something that would do the trick in Red Hat's
Power Tools, or maybe it was at Linuxburg.
Good luck. Wish I could offer more than guesses. Would love to hear if you
figure it out. I'll do the same.
Later,
Bill Steiner

AFAIK, both Bell Atlantic and Flashcom are quite willing to let you hook
up Linux boxes, but also AFAIK, neither provides any sort of explicit
Linux support. I should have Bell Atlantic ADSL in a couple of weeks
(I'm in the Boston area, though, and I get the impression that BA's got
at least two technologies in different regions, so my experience might or
might not bear any resemblance to yours). Their user guide booklet is
definitely oriented towards Windows, with a bit of Mac information tossed
in. From what I read on the DSL newsgroups, there shouldn't be any
problem connecting Linux to most DSL providers, excepting those that use
internal DSL "modems," for which no Linux drivers yet exist, AFAIK.
That said, the DSL newsgroups are filled with horror stories about
Flashcom (and some postings of good experiences, of course, but the
proportion is disheartening). I suggest you check the original posts
(both good and bad) before making a decision.
Flashcom is just an ISP, BTW; the wiring is done by your local phone
company and a company called Covad. Other ISPs also provide service
through Covad, so there's a good chance that you've got a choice of other
ISPs through them. One of these, from which I nearly got service, is
called Speakeasy (http://www.speakeasy.net). Apparently they run much of
their service on Red Hat Linux boxes, so I'm sure they've got Linux
expertise in-house. I don't know about their customer support policy for
Linux, though. I also can't say if they actually provide service in your
area.

Um, last time I checked IIS and Apache were well ahead of Netscape on the
server front. Do many people even care?

Do you have any burning desire to run NAS on Linux? There are so many
alternatives. Heck, I have no desire to run NAS at all.

Turns out my inability to ping was related to a NIC conflict. I put in a
PnP 3Com NIC and now my Linux box is definitely on the network. Time to set
up Samba. Only...
I can't ping my Linux box from the PC by using the Linux box's nickname. I
can ping by typing in the IP address...that works fine. But when I type
"ping nickname" I get nothing. I put the nickname in a HOSTS.SAM file on my
Windows machine and in /etc/hosts on the Linux box. Why ain't it working?
Thanks!

I am running RedHat 6.0 on my workstation and Redhat 5.2 on my laptop,
for some reason I am unable to establish ppp connection from my
workstation, although I am using exactly the same chatscript I connect
with from my laptop. Here are the files that I copied to from laptop to
the workstation:
/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/hosts
/etc/ppp/chatscript
/etc/ppp/options
/etc/ppp/pap-secrets
when debugging pppd, I get the following:
....expect CONNECT
....^M
....alarm
.....connection failed
Changing the time-out for chat with -t option did not work also!!
Any ideas??

Man, I hate to have to write this...
I'm simply trying to get connected to an ISP using pppd.
Not getting anywhere fast. The embarasing thing is, I'm not really THAT
stupid (I think ;-)
To the point: I'm looking at /var/log/messages and see that pppd says the
'modem is locked by user 750'.
I'm using Red Hat distribution 5.0.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

Have you specified a Domain Name Server (DNS)? or configured/listed your Linux

why dont you go to your firewall machine, the one that has direct
connex. and ping your ISP there? ping their Name servers.
go to www.networksolutions.com enter your ISPs domain name.
like microshaft.com, linux.org, xxx.com, whitehouse.gov or
whitehouse.com
all the way at the bottom you will see two or three IPs. ping them.

You pointed me in the right direction. It turns out that the
[NOTFOUND=return] directive is used to stop further searches if the previous
search (to this message) is unsuccessful. Removing this file and making it
say just files dns fixed my problem. It now correctly looks at the
/etc/hosts file and then attempts dns.
Thanks for the pointer.
