I'm trying to setup samba so that my windoze can share files with

Do I need a special samba client for windoze? sort of like a translator.
or does samba actually make it self visible to NT?

Not sure. Have you tried the existing 3c59x driver? no go?
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html
(and while there, check the whole web-page for anything. A note on
'dell' might apply to you?)
And get the latest driver.
Look in it for '3CXFE575BT' or '575'. There are som references to
'575', but if it catches your card, I dont know.
Try it anyway. If it dont work, there is a mailing list for vortex.

Subject: Trouble with remote printing
Date: Thu, 29 Jul 1999 04:58:56 GMT
I've been banging my head against the wall for the last few hours trying to
settle this problem, and I just don't seem able to figure it out. I was
hoping someone might have an idea or a solution for me.
I've got 2 RH5.2 machines connected together over ethernet. The printer is
installed on "fire" 192.168.1.1 (running kernel 2.2.5). My other machine
"racer" (192.168.2.1) is running kernel 2.2.5. I've been trying to set up
remote lpr services on "racer" so that I can print from racer to fire by
simply using lpr <filename>.
These are the printcaps in each machine:
"racer"
lp:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:\
:lp=/dev/nul:\
:rm=fire:\
:rp=lp:
"fire"
lp:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:\
:lp=/dev/lp0:\
:if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:
raw:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/raw:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:\
:lp=/dev/lp0:
The hosts file on racer has the resolution for fire - I can ping fire by
using its name. Similarly, racer is set up on fire so I can ping it as well
by using its name. Furthermore, I've tried modifying the hosts.lpd file to
include the IP address and/or the name of racer.
hosts.lpd on fire:
192.168.2.1
racer
When I try to print from racer, however, I get the following error:
lpr: connect: Connection refused
jobs queued, but cannot start daemon.
Am I doing something wrong? What am I missing? The lpd daemon is running
fine on racer, and yet I can't seem to connect.
Help! Please!
Thanks!

Hello,
Here is a copy of printcap from Printing HOWTO, I hope it helps!
To print to another machine, you make an /etc/printcap entry like this:
# REMOTE djet500
lp|dj|deskjet:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/dj:\
:rm=machine.out.there.com:\
:rp=printername:\
:lp=/dev/null:\
:sh:

Hey there, I have the Shaw@Home Cable ISP and I'm having a not-so-great
time getting the internet going in Slakware Linux (been on it all night
now..).
I have a 3c509B (3com) network card which I have setup fine (PC Light
goes on, modprobe detected). However, I can't seem to lease an IP address.
I setup rc.inet1 to boot with dhcpcd but I always get the error "NO
DHCPOFFER".
I tried dhcpcd -h mynetworklogin, same thing. I also tried dhcpcd -r which
also got that error.
When I check ifconfig eth0 it shows my IP address as 0.0.0.0 at first,
and then it goes to 127.0.0.1 after the "NO DHCPOFFER" error. What am I
missing here? Do I require some special dhcpcd binary perhaps? I'm located
in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Thanks for the help and time,
Nix

I've read in the eql load balancing literature that you have to connect both
lines to an ISP that can load balance at their end. Don't know yet whether
it's true, but I've also been told that you need to have a static IP
address. I wonder about hat one because WinNT can connect connect via
multiple lines on a dynamic IP address.
Recommend that you check with your IPSs and see which one offers the best
deal for multiple line connection. The IPS I use offers dual line access for
a little less than the cost of two accounts. I've had dual line connections
with WinNT through their service, but haven't succeeded with Linux eql yet.

Not at all, just read encryption.txt that was included with your samba
installation. If you dont have the sourcecode (redhat style) download samba
from www.samba.org and read the enclosed encryption.txt

Subject: ppp probs since kernel upgrade to 2.2.9
Date: Wed, 28 Jul 1999 21:31:20 GMT
Hi
Sorry If people have read this on another list but I am really
habing problems.
For the last few weeks I have had some problems getting linux on
the net. It all began when I went to the Redhat site and
downloaded the latest updates for 5.2. The short story is I
lost
all my modules and things stopped working.
My solution after much messing about I decided to recompile the
kernell with the CDrom and internet in the kernell rather than
modules and then with access to the redhat cd i was sure all
would be well.
Anyway since I was recompiling I figured I may as well compile
for 686 with kernell 2.2.9 while I was at it. I have got the
modules mainly fixed I think but the upgraded pppd 2.3.7 still
does not work i was getting error messages concerning missing
compression modules so with info found on various net sites i
added the following to conf.modules.
alias ppp compress-21 bsd_comp
" -26 ppp_deflate
" -24 ppp_active
" -1 bsd_comp
alias ppp0 bsd_comp
I am still getting the following in /var/log/messages
no module symbols loaded
cannot locatte module char-major-14
" nls_iso8859-1
Sysquery Sendto ([128.9.0.107].53) network is unreachable
I also get messages regarding not finding mondules a long list of
modules in the format lo:49 etc. this only scrolls past during
boot and is not in var/messages. I believe these are likely
connected to linuxconf as this program will not find its
modules.
When I launch KPPP to log onto the net it says it connects but i
can access neither email or the web.
In hindsight if I hadnt been so adventurous none of this would
have happenned. But the the reason I got Linux to begin with is
that I like to experiment. Its certainly been a learning
experience :).
Any help would be much appreciated. I am very new to linux and if i can
provide more info by looking in other logs or scripts I would appreciate
any advice on this.
Regards
Mark

Under setting for tcp/ip in win95 (I dont have netbeui) it can be
set under 'netbios' to 'activate netbios over tcp/ip'. That is always
(greyed out, but activated option) hooked here.
_Guess_ it is so because I dont have netbeui installed.
Or is it because I have under 'binding' (dont have english version, so
what it is..) hooked on for 'sharing.. ' and 'client ...'
All under setting for tcp/ip in win95.
Just wonder.
Without those settings will win95 try to handle "arp(lookalike)" and
"SMB" over netbeui? Could that explain a lot of things (like ping)
not working for people?

I dont know if this will help anyone but thought i would put it out for
general consumption. I was having problems similer to many of those listed
in this group regarding ppp and ethernet cards. At one point I even lsot the
ability to boot from my floppy and cdrom.
After resolving that problem by deleting the eth0 interface I was able to
boot from the cd a do a reinstall although the basic problems with eth0 and
ppp remained. During one of several dozen reboots i noticed that pcmcia
services were starting and since I had no pcmcia cards on this 133mHz tower
i removed it , bang ppp works with no problem and I am now in the process of
configuring samba and this site appears to have me almost there.

Ask your ISP whether they use (a) dynamic or (b) static IP addresses.
(a) Most ISPs use dynamic addresses so they don't have to deal with
customers asking for all the info in (b). That is good for you
because it means all you have to do is call your preferred network
config tool (netcfg, linuxconf, ...) and set eth0 (or whatever) to
use DHCP.
(b) Tough luck! Now you have to get all sorts of info out of your ISP:
IP address/hostname for your machine
IP address/hostname/netmask for the gateway
IP address/hostname for the nameserver
IP address/hostname/password for the mailserver
IP address/hostname/password for the FTP/WEB server where you can
put those 5 Megs of free Web space
...
Now that you actually got all that out of your ISP, read the
Net-x-Howto. Call your favorite network config tool (netcfg,
linuxconf, ...) and set eth0 (or whatever), plugging in all the info
as appropriate.

Confused! How can you have a registered domain with a non-permanent link?
Well it's really the ISPs problem but here are the basics:
(a) You are running the server on the gate machine. Then all you have to
do is make sure that the firewall allows connects from *anywhere* to
tcp port 80.
(b) You are running the server on a different machine behind the firewall
and that machine has a *real* IP address. Then just make sure the
firewall enables forwarding all packets (on tcp port 80).
(c) Most likely yo are using private addresses behind the firewall and
the server is behind the firewall. In this case you have to use an
appropriate add on like ipportfw, redir, etc. And set it up so that
is forwards all packets received from *anywhere* on tcp port 80 of
the gate machine to port 80 of the server machine. You'll also need
to make sure that all outbound traffic from the server machine is
masqueraded, but you'd have that anyway.
Hmmm, since I just don't believe in ISPs who would actually give you a
static IP on a dial in connection, I'll assume that you have some WEB
space hosted by the ISP and the domainname pointing to that WEB server of
the ISP. The obvious solution then is to automatically write a relocation
page with your current IP address to that WEB space whenever your dialup
link is up and running. VERY USEFUL if you want to run those CGI scripts
that your ISP won't allow you!
