I have a 3Com 10/100 modem card and have successfully installed the module
for the nic, but I am not sure which /dev/xxx device to use to access the
ether and modem. Do I use eth0, cua0, etc or are there other devices for
pcmcia?
Also, I currently use NT to configure routers. Is there a way to configure
linux to use the serial port as a com port so that I may use it for a
console connection?

The way to get the error message to appear is to edit the file jnetz.prop
and change the number to one of your local ISPs it really doesnt matter i
dont think of the number as long is there is some kinda connection made,
but when the username/passwd is invalid, it pops up with username/password
then you use http://www.snadboy.com 's program called revelation to view
the password. for more info contact me - [EMAIL PROTECTED] much more
info if you would like. Linux works too btw.

CNAME's
or multiple A records according to the comp.protocols.tcp-ip.domains

is this done by creating a second zone file for domain #2 or do i simply
add a CNAME
to the zone file for domain #1?
i tried both options, restarted named and did an nslookup (using myself
as the name
server) but couldn't find my 2nd domain. either i'm totally going about
this the wrong
way or my syntax is incorrect.
i'd appreciate an example zone file or 2...

The key is that you changed the policy from the default ACCEPT (pass
through the packet unchanged) to MASQ (use IP_MASQURADE, which will change
the packet's IP address appropriately).
Remember that most Internet routers will *not* forward packets
with addresses on Net 10, per RFC 1918. (Also on the do-not-forward list
are: Net 0, net 127, 172.16.0.0/12, 192.168.0.0/16, multicast, and
broadcast packets.)
What IP_MASQURADE does is convert your inside address to something that can
go over your PPP connection, and associate incoming packets properly with
the orignal address.

May I suggest that you switch it round and have your Linux box handle

Squid can not proxy POPx, NNTP, SMTP or anything else other than HTTP,
sudo-FTP and a bit of ICMP. You need to change to IP Masquerading or
install sendmail/fetchmail and a news server such as leafnode etc...

There is are a couple of threads running here that may be worth jumping in
on since they seem to parallel what you are trying to do. Just do a search
for subjects with DSL in them (they actually have ADSL in the title but
either should work in the search).
A couple of quick points though.
If you can ping your cards from the machine they are in it only means that
the cards appear to be functioning (not fried). It does not mean that they
are talking to the outside world (bad cable etc). Try pinging other machines
from that box and try pinging that box from other machines.
You mention that one card (eth0) is set to your static IP while the other is
set to 192.168.1.1 which is also a static IP. Has your ISP assigned you that
static address or are they expecting you to use DHCP?
In any event you may want to track down the couple of threads that are
running because they may already have posted the answers you are looking
for.

Dont use the /dev files for Nertworking
Use the ifconfig and route command for info and setup.
eth[0-..] are the networkdevice.
There are configfiles in /etc/pcmcia wich will do this settings
automatic on card insert and remove.

Thanks for the response. I did in fact find an error in the setup of my
MX record in the named file.
Now, however, I get the error
553 ns.ulogin.com. config error: mail loops back to me (MX problem?)
554 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Local configuration error
I have setup the MX record to point to a canonical name and also to a
CNAME. Neither works.
BTW, is it unkosher to send mail back to the helper? If so, I apologize
and will not do so again.

I checked - Squid can not proxy NNTP (in fact it can only sudo-proxy
ftp and ICMP!!). There is no way that what you have set up will work!!

The transmitter works marginally on with the pcnet32.c v1.23
driver used with a LinkSys AMD AM79C978 Homelink PhoneLine
card. The 10 MB ethernet tranmitter generates packets with
a lot of CRC errors and oversized packets - ftp works, but at
1/10 the normal speed. Is there a patch that fixes this that
anyone knows of?

I guess its where the aliasing come in.. if you've setup IP aliasing inside
linuxconf, the $1:* will be replaced by the virtual device/IP. Anyway, I think
the original lines should be something like the following:
if [ "$ISALIAS" = no ] ; then
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-aliases ${DEVICE}
fi
and I changed that to:
if [ "$ISALIAS" = yes ] ; then
...

On the same subject, I can't get SMBTAR to talk to Win 3.11FWG shares.
It just times out before starting to read the first file. I can however
mount the same share using smbmount. SMBTAR works fine with my Win95
box tho... Is this a related problem???

I think what confuse you is the 'driver in kernel' issue. Linuxconf
offers to: 'ONBOOT=YES' and does two ting:
1.) load a module and
2.) ifconfig the card.
But. With driver in kernel (and more than one nic) the _kernel_ will
have to recognise all three nic's at startup. (normally it probes for
one nic, and if found, the kernel is happy and goes on)
And _then_ the nics are configured with a ip-nr and so on. That part
is handled well by linuxconf, setting ONBOOT=YES should take care of
that part. That is:
2.) ifconfig the card.
But, with drivers in kernel the nic's need to be found first. During
boot. A module wont work.
(search for 'ether=' in /usr/doc/HOWTO/ (and below, also ./mini/)
gives you the doc's..)
In short what you need is, in /etc/lilo.conf (and then rerun lilo)
something like this:
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.0.36
label=6
append="ether=11,0x320,eth0 ether=10,0x300,eth1 ether=5,0x280,eth2"
root=/dev/hda6
read-only
This looks for three isa-card's. So i gives both irq and I/O -values.
More values can be given, like tranceiver and duplex, check the doc's
or your nic's driver homepage.
This might be all you need:
append="ether=0,0,eth0 ether=0,0,eth1 ether=0,0,eth2"
And, if found by the kernel, the ifconfig part of it should be taken
care of by the 'ONBOOT=YES' setting. (No need to set module if driver
in kernel)
