First ,thanx for pointing me to the step by step guides to configuring
samba that have been posted here several times
http://www.sfu.ca/~yzhang/linux/samba/index.html
and
http://home.talkcity.com/MigrationPath/maguai/samba.html

in the past several days. I have been thru them several times to verify
that my configuration matches the examples. I think that I am very close but
when attempting to start swat from netscape I get the follwing error
message. "A network error occured while netscape was recieving data.(Network
error : connection reset by peer) Try connecting again later "
Based upon this error message can someone please tell me where to look for
the mistake that I have made and or is there another way to access swat
without using a browser (I would still prefer a GUI vs. command line)

Is there a way in Linux (redhat v 5.2) of autodetecting the network card,
like the program that autodetects the sound card? It's a generic ne2000.

Failing that, how do I go about getting the drivers loaded and configured if
they were'nt set up during the installation phase?

Thanks

Hmmmm, Well the constraint of only 'intelligent answers' kind of
dampers the effort, since they would require intelligent facts. So
far you have told us that you have two boxes and they are doing half a
job. Rather slim data. What progs are you using for mail? what is
your outside connection? What masquerading/firewalling? Well that
would give us a start.

Seems like a man with such an impressive title would have thought of
those though, so disregard.

If you are running 2.2.x kernel you need ipchains, ealier kernel use
ipfwdm. You need port forwarding masquerading/firewall. Not
particularly difficult if you do it step by step. The following sites
are very good and if you set up according to theirs, then the next
step is the ipchains.
This site has a step by step howto for complete setup of samba. steps
for both linux and the win machine. (and they really work <G>)
http://www.sfu.ca/~yzhang/linux/samba/index.html
and this one as well
http://home.talkcity.com/MigrationPath/maguai/samba.html

These sites singly or in combination are nearly guaranteed to get you
networked.

Add the line
insmod ip_masq_ftp

that should do it for you i.e.
 rc.local:
>> modprobe ip_masq_ftp.o
>> ipchains -P forward DENY
>> ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j MASQ

I am using RedHat 5.2 and had the thing set up by editing ifcfg-eth0
in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts.

DEVICE="eth0"
IPADDR="192.168.24.2"
NETMASK="255.255.255.0"

I think the scripts use this info. to add the interface eth0 and then add
route accordingly

Try running minicom just to run a few commands directly to the modem.

You can type AT and it should return OK
You can type ATDT5555555 and it should dial 555-5555

At least you would know that linus can communicate with your modem.

You can run from the command line or in an x-window.

Steve,

I use RH Linux to print to a JetDirect EX server / HP
Deskjet 870 . Using RH's "print-tool" to set it up was fairly simple. The
tricky part is finding the name/address of the JetDirect card. There is
information available on HP's site about telnetting into the jetdirect card
(or EX server) - and how to set it up. (alternatively , you could use
JetAdmin from a Windows box to get that information....)

Here is what my printcap file looks like for the HP870:

lp|DJ870:\
            :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
            :mx#0:\
            :sh:\
            :rm=NPI4BBE64:\                                <======= NOTE:
NPI4BBE64 is name of print server
            :rp=raw:\
<======= NOTE: "raw" or "text"
            :if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:

Hope this is some help to you, I know this gave me problems for a while.

Good Luck !

Subject: File locking Samba RH6 Win95 running DOS program
Date: Sun, 01 Aug 1999 08:02:17 -0500

So far I love Linux.

I have been running my retail store on it for 1 month.

I have a Samba (RH6) server with 5 Win 95 workstations.

Our retail software is written for DOS. It resides on the Linux server
and is shared to the Win workstations.

Many of the data files need to be accessed from several workstations
simultaneously.

I have set:
    File locking=yes
    strict locking=yes
share mode=no (can't run on more than 1 workstation without setting
this no. When I try yes the other
workstation has to close the program
and reopen the program to get access to the share)
oplocks=yes (this seemed to help some)

MY PROBLEM is that there is one file in accounts receivable that keeps
getting corrupted.
When I am filling an order and billing the customer & my clerk is
posting payments or looking up balances,
the file that keeps track of the transactions gets corrupted. It
doesn't stop business, just some of the
transactions don't show up til I rebuild (rechain the indexes)

It's very annoying. Just 1 file & rarely 1 more account file.
I had the same problem under multi-user DOS several years ago & solved
it by using Novell 3.12 but Novell
is slow as Christmas.

Any hints, tips.

I know that there must be other business users that are using a DOS
based program still.

Lets talk...

I'm willing to try any changes, read up if I could find more info, PAY
someone for a solution.

Not enough information here. You probably have eitehr routing problems or
DNS problems.
a)make sure that /etc/resolv.conf has lines like
netserver 111.222.33.444
in it ( where the number is the one you got from your ISP.)
Make sure it is readabel by all
chmod a+r /etc/resolv.conf
b)
do
route -n
there should be at least two lines ending in ppp0
One should start with and internet address. The second should start with 0.0.0.0 and
have that same internat address starting the first entry as its second entry.

You need to set it up so that the driver for the card is loaded at boot time.
Look for a line in dmesg to see if it was loaded. One thing tht is needed is
a line like
alias eth0 ne2k-pci
in /etc/conf.modules ( where ne2k-pci to be replaced with the driver
for you particular card)
I am not sufficiently knowldgable to knwo what else is needed. to start up
the driver for your card.

They are not sending login:. Your ISP probably does not use login authentication
but rather pap or chap.
See

The machine has a default route to 202.186.yyy.1 and when users outside
our subnets ping 202.188.xxx.180, they do not get a ping reply. I have
activated 'tcpdump' on both interfaces and finds echo requests comes in
on eth0 and goes out on eth1.

A text copy of the dump results of 'ifconfig' and 'route -n' is
attached.

Thank you John, Vidar for your help so far.

I've downloaded Donald Becker's file from SMC, then copied this file to
/usr/src/linux/modules and tried to copiled using the commands at the bottom
of the file and still would not work.

When I tried to compiled it will give me a ton of errors (parsing errors and
the like ...)

Of course, linuxconf will not pick up anything that is not properly
configured (by the way are you using the config or control option?)

Thank you for your great help ... by this time I owe you more than a pizza
...
John Nunez

Any ideas

The *industry standard* proceedure for downloading to disk, in any
browser I've experience with is to hold down the left shift key when
clicking on the link. Verify the link is the correct one before
clicking on it though, I don't know how many times I've clicked on a
freshmeat link that *said* it was the file, and got a 1500 byte piece of
html that will do it automaticly for you.

Cheers, Gene

NE2000 cards weren't auto anything, too jurrasic a design. The
information goes in /etc/conf.modules (usually) and looks something like
this:

alias eth0 ne
options ne io=0xNNN irq=N

where the address and irq are obtained by looking at the cards jumper
configuration.

That may not be all thats required! I have a no-name card, with all the
addresses etc supposedly properly configured. It works ok for the most
part until I start the rc5des client. At that point it dies with 95% of
the data received going into the frame error count you get from
ifconfig's report.

DMA is not mentioned because I can't find it using it, and I think it
should.

Does anyone have any clues about this?

Cheers, Gene

Subject: Can't ping my ISP
Date: Sun, 1 Aug 1999 09:56:44 -0500

First crack at setting up a Linux box which I hope will eventually be a
firewall for my home network. The PC is a GW2K P5-75 PCI 2.0 Intel mobo
with 48 megs of RAM. Installed Caldera Open 2.2 and everything seemed to
go smoothly. Appeared to configure my Netgear 100BaseT just fine with no
apparent problems. Entered the appropriate TCP/IP settings during the
installation.

The NIC is connected to a Cisco 675 router. When I attempt to ping my ISP I
get nothing. All internal diagnostics appear normal. This is a
straightforward configuration which I thought would not cause any headaches,
but I am wrong. What is holding me up?
