I found it in the database! strange that I didn't before, maybe I mistyped it...
anyways
it says "OK".
That's good news. Knowing that it should work now, any suggestions?

Hello,
The new smbmount misses the -P parameter for password, which means
the password needs to be entered as: -U user%password.
This is fine, however, autofs still uses the -P parameter to supply
passwords
defined in auto.misc, so now that there isn't any -P support for smbmount,
autofs can't mount samba shares which has passwords.
I'm using the versions of samba and autofs that came with RH6.
Any ideas?

Hey all..
Looking for software that gives report.. daily or monthly.. just something
that gives reports of traffic and or bandwith usage. I looked at the MRTG
suite but tried setting it up.. aparently it's geared for routers and I had no
luck finding info on if it's possible to set it up for a linux box.
Basically I really need is something that will report the amount of traffic
used on an interface.. something that retains the traffic info even after a
reboot... so netstat isn't what I'm looking for :)
I'm running Slack 4.0.. kernel 2.2.10
If anyone can help, that'd be great

This is getting interesting. I also have bought an "OK" modem which
doesn't get recognized by BIOS. I have returned it as defective and now
waiting for new party arrive to my local store to replace it. Though I
didn't try it on windows (don't have one). Is there any chance that
yours is Apache ISA A56SP-R ? If yes, it is a little bit too much for a
coincidence...
You said that linux detects onboard UARTs. So serial driver support
included in kernel.
To begin with, your modem is recognized by BIOS, before linux booted up.
Is this correct? If yes, it is still more interesting. Linux kernel has
just got to detect it. No way. If no, then either winmodem database is
in error, or your modem is not a standard 16550 and thus some other
kernel parameters (regarding serial driver) should be tweaked, or there
are some special software or procedures to make it work. The best person
for these information is the one who has reported that modem as "OK".
You can find him/her address at the database also.
For instance, there are modems with RAM based (vs. ROM) firmware. Which
means that the firmware should be loaded into modem before it can work.
Though the modem is hardware based, and though the software to load the
firmware can't be called "driver", there still is a need for assistant
software to make such a modem work.
I am near the end of my guesses. I think the best way is to contact the
person who reported it as "OK".
Good luck, (pls. feedback if yours is Apache/ISA A56SP-R series)

I seem to have a similiar problem with my EtherExpress Pro/10+ . The
RH 5.2 worked like a charm, 6.0 is nothing but trouble. I was able to
get the card to talk to the network by dsiabling the PnP completely
both in BIOS and on the card (isapnp didn't cut it). Note that I had
to do none of this in 5.2. The settings for modprobe are
alias eth0 eepro
options eepro io=0x230 irq=11
and it works but it is EXTREMELY FLAKY. I get frequent stalls when
opening web pages or downloading files, sometimes I have to hit
"refresh" 10 times before a page loads. I was unable to trace the
cause of it but rest assured - none of this was happening in 5.2
It is so bad that I am writing this reply from win98. :(
There is also troubling sign that something is really very wrong: when
the eepro module loads it says "at 0x230 E4:C4:32:13 ...", it is
missing the "EtherExpress 10+" header that it used to have in 5.2
(looks like some pointer trouble in the source code).

I'm not sure that is right NG....
But anyways, i have some problems installing
my ethernet card (NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet PCI card)
I have no idea how to install/configure it in linux, and
the vendor does not support linux (but they have linux driver)
The driver is modified TULIP. If someone uses this card in
linux, or know how to setup it, please e-mail me.
Thanks inadvance, R.K.

That would be impossible, because it depends on what you use the
link for as well as how fast it is and what the latency is.
For rough idea of what differences you might find, think in
terms of efficiency and timing for PPP packets. A PPP packet
has 40 bytes of overhead (addressing, etc.), so whatever the mtu
is set to, that amount minus 40 bytes is the actual payload.
For example, if you set the mtu to 128 there will be almost 1/3
of each packet that is overhead and does not contribute to data
transfer. If you do only large ftp transfers, that would cause a serious
increase in the time it takes to transfer each file.
But then again, if you set the size to 1500, which will reduce
the overhead from 40/128 to 40/1500 (31% down to 2.6%) to get
faster ftp transfers, you have a different problem. In this
case any interactive tasks that are using the same link will
always have to wait will huge packets are sent. The bigger the
packets and/or the slower the link or they higher the latency of
the link, the more annoying the waiting time will be for
keyboard response.
Hence mtu depends on the mix of applications using the link,
the speed of the link and the latency of the link.
I tend to do about an equal mix of both file transfers and
interactive applications, so I try to set my mtu as low as
I can and still get reasonable transfer rates. I don't think
a 10-15% rate reduction is too bad (I've seen people who do
data transfers all day get very excited about the last 2% they
can squeeze out!). If I didn't do any file transfers then
an mtu that cuts it down to 50% wouldn't be unreasonable.
Likewise if the wait time is small anyway, such as will be the
case if you have DS-1 (1.544Mb) data rates or higher, then there
is no point in not using a large mtu.
The point is that setting the mtu is a judgment call, and
cannot be objectively determined by a program.

Hi,
I am trying to get very basic NFS working, i.e. the ability to export
a file system and nfs mount it on another machine. I can't get my
linux box to allow mounts.
I am running linux installed from RedHat 6.0.
I have the following entry in my /etc/exports file:
/nfs (rw,no_root_squash)
I ran /usr/sbin/exportfs after changing /etc/exports and ran
rpcinfo -p to make sure mountd and nfsd were there.
I try to mount from a solaris 2.6 box with
mount machine_ip:/nfs /nfs
and it gets permission denied.
I have the following in my syslog:
Aug 1 19:56:55 elfen mountd[2763]: refused mount request from
livid.myhome.com: no export entry
Anybody know what gives? As far as I know I have it set up right.

I am running a linux machine with RedHat 6 and the latest version of
Netatalk with Appleshare IP support.
There is a G3/350 connected to it via 100Mbit switch.
The linux machine has a disk mirror which maxes out at around 5MB/second
at the moment (needs tuning).
The maximum transfer rate I can get with file transfers is 1.3MB per
second. On a wintel machine with SAMBA, I can get at least 5MB/second
and up to 9.8MB/sec when writing to a single disk.
I am tearing my hair out trying to get some extra performance out of
this config.
Can anyone give me some pointers?

I've set up my Masqueraded RedHat 6.0 linux box to dial on demand with
the utility diald, BUT:
when I boot up my system, diald starts to call my ISP although nobody
has made a request to internet.
If I kill the diald process, and restart it again, I've the same result:
it starts to dial automaticaly, and this happens whenever I kill and
restart diald.
BUT, now is the strange thing I don't understand:
If I run linuxconf, and without doing anything, I quit, then, if I
restart diald, all goes well. Diald wait until somebody makes a request
to internet, then dial the ISP, and when it's idle about two minutes, it
hangs the line until the next request.
I DON'T understand why if I run linuxconf and quit all goes well.
I've inspected my routing table, and ifconfigs before and after runing
linuxconf and they're the same.
I've tested this strange thing many times, and always happen in that
manner.
WHY?
I'd like diald too work well at the first time, and not after doing the
trick I've discovered randomly.
