I have just put together a Linux server for the office. Email, Samba
and apache works well, but... I can't find any way to enable Microsoft
Project 98 to "share" our projects on the server. I've tried to use the
web options of the program but it doesn't work.
Is it possible to solve this problems or I'm forced to use a MicroSoft
server ??
How can I put to work the mspjhhtp.exe that project install in the
samba public directory on the server?
Thanks and sorry for the English

Hello there,
I am unable to ping the host machine name or by IP address from the host
itself.
All the network config seems to check out correctly. I can ping & telnet
the machine from the network.
Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,

Both hosts.allow and hosts.deny are empty. I tried putting "ALL : ALL" in
hosts.allow, but that didn't solve the problem.

Hi,
I've just installed one of those cards this morning. It was very straight
forward. Read the kernel how-to and re-compile your kernel including the
"tulip" network card driver. When that is done and your card is working,
copy the new files from the fa310tx install disk and read the readme file.
It's very very straight forward. I was put off doing it but it's honestly
only two lines of commands once the kernel has been re-compiled. If you want
more specific advice have a go and e-mail any problems to me or the group.
Regards
Andy

Take a look at http://www.wolfenet.com/~jhardin/ipfwadm.html for a GUI
wrapper around the ipfwadm command. There's also a link to an
ipfwadm-to-ipchains translator. This should be enough to get you started.

Try it without the "ipchains -P forward deny". If that works then, yes, you
do need more ipchains rules.
Assuming, of course, that the above rules are the *only* ones in effect.

Subject: PPP-alarm-Can't connect
Date: 2 Aug 1999 13:30:14 -0500
I am trying to connect to my ISP from Linux on my dual-boot system (Win98 is
the other OS). However, I cannot figure out how to set things up. I
prepare my modem for use by issuing "setserial /dev/ttyS2 UART 16550A irq
3." This allows me to dial out from minicom. However when I try to start
pppd (v2.3.3), I cannot connect. /var/log/messages reports:
Jul 31 09:44:24 localhost chat[345]: send (ATZ^M)
Jul 31 09:44:24 localhost chat[345]: expect (OK)
Jul 31 09:45:09 localhost chat[345]: alarm

Jul 31 09:45:09 localhost chat[345]: Failed
Jul 31 09:45:10 localhost pppd[343]: Exit.
Why is there such a long delay between "expect (OK)" and "alarm"? What does
"alarm" mean, and does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it. Any
help will be greatly appreciated, and rewarded monetarily, as soon as I win
the lottery.

All of the IPX utilities require the interface to be up. The only way to
bring them up is with IP.
Don;t see how this is possible without hacking the source.

Subject: Re: NIS/DNS Setup Info needed
Date: Mon, 02 Aug 1999 18:15:47 GMT
Assuming you still have windows somewhere, to get the DNS servers for
your ISP, logon to the internet, click on Start > Run, and type
"winipcfg". Somewhere in the box will be the DNS server(s). Once you
have that, you can either add it to your /etc/resolv.conf, or feed it to
whatever program you're using for PPP (I know ppp-setup will
automatically put in the DNS server in the /etc/resolv.conf file if you
give it the address when you setup.)
Failing that, you could go to some other ISP's website and find out what
their DNS server is and use that :) (but they might not like it)

Subject: Re: NE2000 and kernel 2.2.8
Date: Mon, 02 Aug 1999 18:00:34 GMT
Hi. I have a noname NE2000 card also, and based on my experience, here
are a few things to try. First, you are right, the driver has changed to
just ne. If you compiled it as a module, try putting
alias eth0 ne (or what ever it's called)
options ne io=0x300 irq=3
These lines come from the kernel documentation (which is a sub directory
under /usr/src/linux). Supposedly, if those lines aren't there, the
module won't auto-probe for cards. Check the documentation in the
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/net (or something like that, maybe
drivers/net).
If that doesn't work, try compiling the kernel with the network driver
built in.

Subject: RH6.0 cannot connect to me from Internet
Date: Mon, 2 Aug 1999 10:02:54 -0700
I have a new RH6.0 installation running Apache 1.3.6. I am able to connect
to it fine across my LAN, browsing the web pages without problem. But, I
cannot access it from the Internet (I tried at a friend's place, then I just
signed up for the AOL trial and I cannot connect). But, my previous
computer, which is running RH5.2 with the same Apache, it accessible from
the Internet. I can connect out to the Internet fine from the RH6.0 box
(using Netscape, I can connect anywhere I want).
Is there some security option in RH6.0 that is blocking the HTTP/FTP
packets?
The only thing I see different so far is that my RH5.2 box and the RH6.0
have different output from netstat -r.
The 5.2 box (which works fine) shows three entries, one for the loopback,
one for default, and one for my gateway address.
But 6.0 shows an additional entry which includes as a 'destination' the
box's IP address, with a netmask that is fully specified as 255.255.255.255
on my eth0 interface. Is that a problem?
Any help would be appreciated, since the reason for the upgrade was to have
a better web server, and instead it cannot be used yet!
Thanks,
David

The alarm is generated by chat after it times out (default 45 second
timeout) while looking for the "OK" modem response to ATZ. The modem
isn't responding.
It might be that /dev/ttyS2 isn't configured for the port that the modem
actually uses. Although if ttyS2 is actually the one that minicom uses
then that couldn't be so. It might be that the IRQ is being used on
another port by another process. "cat /proc/interrupts" will show the
active IRQs and "cat /proc/ioports" will show port information.
Another possibility is that Q1 is set in the modem profile. Don't take

Subject: Netatalk with serial device ?
Date: Mon, 02 Aug 1999 19:10:54 +0200
Hello,
I installed netatalk on my Linux box, kernel 2.2.9 and RH 6.0.
I run afpd and it works fine with my Mac (MacOS 8.6) connected via a hub
(10 base-T).
But I also have another Mac (68020) running system 7.1 (-> no appleshare
IP), that I cannot connect to the ethernet network.
I have a serial PC <-> Mac cable, which works with X-Modem, Kermit...
Would it be possible to use it and run netatalk on the serial port ?
I tried something with SLIP, but it doesn't work (atalkd says "sl0,
cannot configure"). It wasn't probably the good way to do it.
I don't need to use my Linux box as a bridge between the two Macs (even
if it might be interesting), but only to connect the "old" mac to Linux
and share a few files.
Any suggestions, comments ?
Thanks.

Subject: Re: PPP to Shiva LanRover from Linux

I've read all this thread and other information from shiva, but I
cannot connect to our server (no problem with Win98 and the Security
Pack). I tried the put the code in pap-secrets, but no effect. I
always get the messages
Remote message: SecurID authentication needed
PAP authentication failed
I tried to play with the different parameters in options.ippp0 (I have
Linux 2.0.36 that comes with the Suse 6.0 distribution) and ioptions
and tried and tried a hundred of times (at least), I always get the
same messages.
Is there something else I'm missing ?
Note that the connection to my ISP works fine

Subject: Gateway / Firewall Einrichtung wer hilft mir?
Date: Mon, 2 Aug 1999 20:50:56 +0200
Hallo
anderes.
Das ganze soll on demand laufen.
Grsse Marco

Just one point:
If your NIC is PNP. turn the pnp function off,
pnp turned on, can ( as it did on my cp) prevent you to have a internet
connection under Linux....
this is juston hint in passing by...:-)
while searching for the solution for my printer...:-((

Hi,
I connect to my isp, earthlink.net, via dialup connection and everything
works except when I send mail out I get:
'<<< 501 <root@what I call my box>... Sender domain must exist'
How can I rectify this without setting my domain as one that already exists?
What should I make my domain name? Thanks!
