Hi I have a couple of questions. I'm looking to build a little home
network between my laptop and my desktop. Both are in different rooms
in the house. I had them both networked together with the Netgear
starter kit, but disconnected it when I got Media One that I use on my
laptop. I'm looking for a computer that is powerful enough to be a
little server between my two computers. I want to set Linux up on it(
and maybe Win98 so I can back up my laptop onto it) , have Media One
come into one of the network cards, have the other network card go to
the hub where the other two will be connected. How easy would this be
to do? What kind of performance would i need in the server? I'm looking
just to buy a 133 or 166 mhz for cheap money and wonder if it would
work ok, I'm going to mainly use it for the internet connection and for
a backup up system on the hard-drive for my laptop. I have a bit of
experience in installing Linux and doing double OS setups on one
computer. Thanks for any help! - Chris

>From the
http://sunsite.auc.dk/linux-newbie/FAQ2.htm#forgot_root_passwd site:

"Boot your computer from the Linux boot diskette, find your Linux root
partition on the hard drive, and edit the file /etc/passwd. In this
file, erase the encrypted password for root, so it is empty. For
example, the /etc/passwd entry for root may look like this:

root:abcdefghijklm:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

The "abcdefghijklm" is a 13 character encrypted password (actually, it
is a 2 character "salt" used for encryption and a 11-character
encrypted password). I would change this line to:

root::0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash

Now, the root account has no password, so I can reboot the computer
and, at login prompt, type "root" and for password just press ENTER
(empty, no password). After a successful login, I immediately set the
password for root. "

I don't think any of the wireless cards have linux drivers yet, but for
a bit more outlay, ethernet-wireless bridges are available:

basically you use normal network cards (and hence drivers), and the box
does the rest.

Stuff needed:

standard network card for linux 15 UKP
standard hub 60 UKP
...
Wireless ethernet bridge 250UKP
wireless card for the windows machine 150UKP

A lot of money to avoid a couple of wires...

If you haven't alredy, I'd advise setting it up normally with wires, then
converting after...

When I log in to my ISP, th'e first time it's OK : kppp starts Netscape
normally and that all.

The second try is a failure (pppd doesn't seems to start) and kppp dies.
I have to reboot my Linux box and then it's OK again.

I have tried to find a lock file but the one which is automatically
created in my .netscape directory is normally removed when I leave
Netscape.

So, any advice ?

Do a search on RFC822 (I'm 99% positive that is the POP3 specification).

I have set un mini installation of Linux (2.2.5) in order to fit in less
than 6MO (a flash disk is used in place of the conventionnal hard disk).
The purpose of this is to have a diskless, stand alone box used as an
automation device. It includes a network layer.

Every thing is nice, the system boots but I'm unable to login (localy or
remotely). I'm even able to start the control software via the
boot.local script but login is impossible.
Locally I get : invalid password for 'UNKNOWN' user on tty1
and when I want to quit with the Ctrl+Alt+Del : You don't exist. Go Away
Remotely I get : Unable to connect to remote host. Connexion denied

However, I have check the libraries (with ldd) and everything is OK
The files passwd, passwd-, group, shadow, shadow-, gshadow are also
installed

I'm really in trouble and your help will be greatly appreciated.

Hard to say since 'can't ping' is a rather unprecise term.
1. What respons do you get ?

2. try more /proc/interrupts on your linux box. Your NIC (ethx) should
appear here.

3. Be sure that both NICs are configured to use the right flavour of
Ethernet i.e
Thin Ethernet (the BNC connector if any) or the RJ45 TP connector. Of
course, both
machines must use the same.

4. If Thin Ethernet, remember you MUST use T-connectors and terminators.

5. Have a look in the /var/loog/messages

I think you better let us know the respons you get in your ping.......

i have install redhat 6.0 on an ethernet, and it connect to teh network and
Internet succesfully. i can telnet, ftp and access the web page using its ip
address(let's say
202.187.174.26) the domain is 202.187.0.0(let say inte.edu.my) and
subnetmask is 255.255.255.0 my hostname is redhat. the browser reply that
web url not found when i type in www.redhat.inte.edu.my
using a pc outside the network.
however can i make the host url visible? i think that it doesnt need to
register again since teh domain network already has been assign the valid
domain name.

anyone please show me how to make my web site accesible using url instead of
ip address!

Just create a file called '.forward' the full stop is very important. In the
file just put your user name@your server name eg andrew@localserver

Regards

Andy

PS You can also set up aliases but that's just as easy.

"ping : send to : No buffer space available " was the response string.
Can't seem to track down where this buffer is and how to make it happy. Any

(Don't take me too literally here, because I'm basically making
this up...)
If your auto.home map is truely an NIS map, you don't need
to copy it around. That's what NIS is for. All you should have to do
is your 1-2-3 above. You shouldn't need (4) because the autofs there
will get the updated map from your NIS server. Nor do you need (5)
or (6), I think; autofs consults the map each time it needs to satisfy
a request so it sees the updates right away.

>From re-reading above, I suspect that while your auto.home is
an NIS map, you have't told the autofs to use the map, but
instead have it using the file directly. How you change it depends
on how you are starting autofs, but eventually you should get
something like: /usr/sbin/automount /homes yp auto.home
