Subject: RedHat 6.0: What's wrong with NFS?
Date: Wed, 28 Jul 1999 10:32:36 +0200

Hi,

I have BIG problems with response on my RedHat 6.0 box and I'm pretty
sure it's a problem with NFS. When I used RH 5.2 I had no problems and
it felt like sitting on a Pentium II 450 MHz, 512 MB RAM, which it is,
but now it feels like sitting on a 386 with 4 MB.

The box has at the moment 2 NFS mounted file systems and mount gives
this:

mailhost:/var/spool/mail on /var/spool/mail type nfs
(rw,hard,intr,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,nfsvers=3,addr=129.177.31.53)
ojt:(pid515) on /u type nfs
(intr,rw,port=1023,timeo=8,retrans=110,indirect,map=amd.u,dev=00000004)
ojt:(pid515) on /net type nfs
(intr,rw,port=1023,timeo=8,retrans=110,indirect,map=amd.net,dev=00000005)
jupiter:/jupiter/home2 on /a/jupiter/jupiter/home2 type nfs
(grpid,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,noconn,rw,intr,hard,dev=00000006)

where "mailhost" is an old sun4. This mount is "fixed". "jupiter" is a 2
processor SGI running IRIX 64 6.2. It is mounted through AMD. Other file
systems can be mounted depending on who's logged in.

When _~90% of the CPU is idle_ the _load average is ~2_ as it is right
now. I'm the only user logged in and the only thing that is happening is
that I'm writing this in Communicator. Star Office 5.1 is also open, but
is not doing anything. I also have ~10 terminal windows open.

I try to dump a 64 MB file to the NFS partition and it takes around 1
minute => 8mbit/s so I don't think the net is saturated, at least the
speed is sufficient.

When I dump 64 MB the machine grinds to a halt. I do a "man tcsh" and it
takes 15 sec to get the page up, even though the man page is on local
disk.

I had none of these problems when I was running RH 5.2. Can it be that
the NFS response is the same, but since NFS has been moved from user
space to kernel space the machine is unable to do anything else when is
occupied with NFS? I have looked in /var/log/messages, but there is
nothing of interest as far as I can see.

Is there a switch I need to set, or an extra mount option that needs to
be included? Please help me with this as I'm going crazy and my
productivity is 50% of what is should be...

Please email me as well as post to this NG.

Thanks,
Ole Jacob

Okay, here's the story. I have Linux with FreeSWAN at the office sitting
as the gateway between the internal network and the Internet. Let's call
it 204.129.0.5 (just picking numbers out of thin air) and the internal
network is 192.168.0.1. Here at the house I have FreeBSD, and I have the
ipSec software downloaded from the Internet, all nicely installed and
compiled into the kernel.

Now the question: how to get them talking to each other?

The FreeSwan docs show how to set up a tunnel between two Linux boxes.
The BSDipsec docs show how to set up a tunnel between two FreeBSD boxes.

But I can't get the bloody woogums to talk to each other!

Anybody have a clue or suggestion?

Oh: the internal home network is at 192.168.0.5, and let's call its
public interface 20.4.120.8 (just to pick another number out of thin
air). Any clues about a) what to put in my ipsec.conf on the Linux side,
and b) what to type at ipsecadm on the FreeBSD side, would be
appreciated.

does your network work?
type this:

Are you sure these files work... As I have installed both on my Linux
server and it has problems. It keeps getting an IRQ 0 for my NIC???

It's really odd. As I've compile the module a couple of times in
different as described in the file and always get the same result.

Has anyone got it to work... and if so could you please tell me how,
or send me the *.c program you compiled.

Thanks,

Using these words - linux router single floppy - I got 879 hits on this

:Hard to say since 'can't ping' is a rather unprecise term.
:1. What respons do you get ?

i get no response at all, the only "resposn" is that when i try to ping
blinks my light-indicator on ethernet-hub (only mine, not the other computer's)

100% loss - that's all.

:2. try more /proc/interrupts on your linux box. Your NIC (ethx) should
:appear here.

It is there - IRQ 9

:3. Be sure that both NICs are configured to use the right flavour of
:Ethernet i.e
:Thin Ethernet (the BNC connector if any) or the RJ45 TP connector. Of
:course, both
:machines must use the same.

I'm not sure what are you mean, but i think both use "Fast Ethernet"
(two cards,hub and RJ45 connectors)

:4. If Thin Ethernet, remember you MUST use T-connectors and terminators.

:5. Have a look in the /var/loog/messages

:
:I think you better let us know the respons you get in your ping.......
:
:Erlend
:

I want to add one thing, i think it might be useful:
Backgroud: there're two computers - 1) Linux, Win98; 2)Win98
First is named "linuxbox" (IP - 192.168.0.2)
    second "winbox" (IP - 192.168.0.1).
When i ping "winbox" from "linuxbox" (linux) blinks only my light-indicator
    on the hub.
When i ping "windox" from "linuxbox" (win98) nothing blinks at all, and i
    got messages
"The host is unreachable" (i use win98 very seldom).

When i ping "linuxbox" (linux) from "winbox" blinks two indicators (mine and
    winbox'es)
When i ping "linuxbox" (win98) from "winbox" blinks only winbox'es indicator
    on the hub

(In all situations i get 100% packets loss)

I hope i discraibed everything clearly (sorry for non-technical language),
i also hope that means something.

it seems that you didn't tell your linux box there are another box around,
right?

try to ping your win98 box from your linux box in ip form and vice versa,
like:
    $ping 192.168.100.2
(assume that your linux box is 192.168.100.1 and your win98 box is
192.168.100.2)
if you are able to do so & success, then go and modify your /etc/hosts, else
your network setting is wrong.

what to put in in /etc/hosts?
just look at the file and follow the pattern. let say that your win98 box
called redmond and your linux box called tux, then your /etc/hosts should
looks like below:

...
...
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost
192.168.100.1 tux.somedomain tux
192.168.100.2 redmond.somedomain redmond

usually this type of ipadd-domainname mapping should solve by a dns server.
since your small LAN (2 boxes only) doesn't has one, so you need to key-in
such info everyrtime you introuduce a new box into your LAN.

hope it helps. cheers.

I got a solution via email; creating the new user Ben Williams
using the adduser command and double-quotes to specifically delimit
the name including the space. Now the '98 machine can see the share
and read just fine. It can't write to it, which is bizzare as I've
been through the samba permissions multiple times and they're set
so that the home dir is root and permissions are read and write.
I might have something screwy in the actual user account permissions
that samba masks with, though... Although linuxconf now shows the
account as having all the privs available... ??? Linux is so
convoluted. :)

Thank you to everyone who looked at the original issue, much
appreciated!

How do I set it up so that each service is only allowed on a

mail.mydomain.com (mail), www.mydomain.com AND mydomain.com

So if someone tries telneting to www.mydomain.com or someone
