Do you have defaultroute among your ppp options?

Are both cards on the same network? I encountered a problem with two NICS
with both on the same network. While both had their own IP addresses, only
the default route was being recognized and used. As soon as I place the
second NIC on another network, everything started working fine.

Subject: PPP problems
Date: Tue, 03 Aug 1999 20:01:00 -0500
Hello folks. After seeing my problem posted in several other messages, I
thought to myself "Aha, I'm in luck. A solution!". Unfortunately, this
doesn't seem to be the case. The error I'm getting when I try to dial
into my ISP is:
"LCP: timeout sending Config-requests"
I have tried removing ayncmap from my options file.
I have tried modifying my chatscript file to use '\d\c' in response to
connect.
I have tried adding 'passive' to my options file to set pppd into
passive mode.
I have tried disabling every compression option pppd has a listing for.
I have tried adding @ppp to my username.
I enabled kernel-level logging of ppp, and after the modem connects, the
only thing that happens is the LCP Config-request packet gets sent out
10 times, and then times out.
When I dial in using minicom, I get the 'CONNECT' message, and then
nothing is transmitted. I am using an external Zoom 56k Dual-modem
modem, which works and connects perfectly to my ISP under Windows.
Does anyone have any other suggestions that might lead to a solution? Or
has someone else had this problem, and figured out how to fix it? I'm
rather anxious to get my linux box connecting to the 'net again. :)

Hmm...It would seem, from running "testparm" that Samba wants a public
directory. When it cannot find one, even if the "public" section in
smb.conf is absent, Samba makes /tmp the public directory.

I guess you didn't read far enough to see my actual question. I know the
unit will run linux, and was simply soliciting advice on a distribution.
I was ASKING if the mini-docking station's integrated ethernet was
supported by Linux. I've already called Gateway, read all the associated
HOWTO's and FAQs, and thought perhaps this would be a worthwhile
question to ask. Either you didn't read past "newbie," or you didn't
know the answer to my question, but you're evidently much more
intelligent than me, so thanks for "using your head" and replying to my
request.

Well, if that is the case, then you need to dig out the Printing

My ISP has a NT server. I am running RedHat6. Dialing by kppp is ok,
but I cannot receive the authentication after the connection and I get a
timeout. All what is reported by the log is that pppd has went down on
signal 15. The authentication by my side is configured as PAP.
What the hell my ISP's NT server is waiting for ?
Who has experienced pppd dial-up connection to an NT server?

Date: Wed, 04 Aug 1999 01:54:15 GMT
I have a KTI PE-520 Plus PCMCIA ethernet card in my Toshiba laptop,
which is running Red Hat Linux 6.0.
In the /var/log/messages file, I get a number of apparently
successful messages referring to pcmcia, then a line with:
pcnet_cs: Request IO: No more items
When the system has booted, ifconfig eth0 n.n.n.n can't find any
such device, ping can't see any other systems in the building.
Meanwhile the ethernet adapter is blinking merrily away as
though there were no problem.
I've fiddled around with /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia, and
the line PCIC=i82365 is the only entry that gets me the
apparent activity.
Any suggestions more specific than the HOWTO's, etc? I'm
trying to avoid rebuilding kernel/messing with source, if
possible.

I just set something like this up at home using RH6 and multiple Windoze
PCs. The main issue with the 2 ethernet cards is that you will probably
have to boot in DOS so that you can do the HW configuration before you try
and load them up. As far as RH goes, I know for roadrunner there are setup
scripts available online - I am not sure about MediaOne.
A 133 would work for this fine.... you could probably even get by with a
486. As far as backing up your laptop goes, you /could/ dual-boot your
linux box, but why not just buy a Jaz drive or something similar? You could
always use Samba or something also.....

This last line should have had the Interrupt listed as well I believe

Subject: virtualhosts for ftpd?
Date: Tue, 03 Aug 1999 13:30:38 GMT
Hello,
I have an average linux box used for a couple of server functions (mail,
DNS, ftp and http). With apache I could create the virtual hosts I needed,
but I'd like to have some virtual ftp servers also.
To be more exact :
The box has one nic, eth0, and one IP address, let's say 128.128.128.1
I have a domain name, e.g. mynet.com, and configured my box to be a DNS
server using named. It has one name and as many aliases as I like, let's
say mybox.mynet.com for the name and www.mynet.com, ftp.mynet.com and
otherwww.mynet.com as aliases.
I set up apache to have two virtual hosts, one for www.mynet.com and one
for otherwww.mynet.com, and it works fine.
Now I would like to create a new alias, otherftp.mynet.com, and have a
different virtual ftp server for that. I'd like otherftp.mynet.com requests
to send users into one root (/home/ftp/otherftp) and ftp.mynet.com to
another (/home/ftp/ftp) with no possibility to move between the two.
The main purpose for this is that anonymous users would be let into only
otherftp.mynet.com, but banned from ftp.mynet.com
I have heard about a couple of solutions, like IP aliasing and so on, but I
do not really know exact info about any of them.
I anybody has a solution for the above situation or knows where I can find
that please let me know.
Thanks

Subject: uugetty - can't get RINGBACK to work
Hi,
Not sure whether this is the right group for this question... if not, just
tell me and I'll redirect it.
Introduction: running RH 5.2 (without any X software) on my home PC. I got
uugetty version 2.0.7j working with a 14.4k modem (Telebit QBlazer Plus)
connected to ttyS1, using the autoanswer configuration. That worked just
fine. Now I want to extend that to use the ringback feature, so as to be
able to leave the box available for dial-in throughout the day, while
allowing my wife to still receive phone calls... ;) And THAT is not
working: the modem answers my call at the second ring (or first, depending
on some settings in my /etc/default/uugetty.ttyS1 file).
Details:
I get uugetty up at boot time with the following line in inittab:
S1:345:respawn:/sbin/uugetty -d /etc/default/uugetty.ttyS1 ttyS1 F57600
vt100
/etc/gettydefs file is just the standard one that came with the
distribution.
Leaving out commented lines, my /etc/default/uugetty.ttyS1 file looks like
this:
=================================
DEBUG=777
RINGBACK=YES
MINRBTIME=10
MAXRBTIME=60
INTERRING=8
MINRINGS=1
MAXRINGS=3
INITLINE=cua1
TIMEOUT=60
INIT="" \d+++\dAT\r OK\r\n ATH0\r OK\r\n AT\sM1\sE1\sQ0\sV1\sX4\sS0=0\r
OK\r\n
WAITFOR=RING
CONNECT="" ATA\r CONNECT\s\A
DELAY=1
==================================
I've played around with the RINGBACK-associated parameters, and the only
difference in the outcome is whether modem answers after the first ring or
during/after the second. It _seems_ (don't take this too seriously) that
modem is answering 8 secs (or whatever the INTERRING value is) after the
first ring.
I turned on debugging (in growing levels of detail) to try to get a clue as
to what was happening, and here I found something that puzzled me. According
to info I happened to stumble upon, DEBUG=100 should log ringback debugging,
DEBUG=2 logs default file processing info, and so on; while DEBUG=777 logs
ALL categories. Although I turned on full debugging, I NEVER got a D_RB
message (i.e. ringback-related message) in my log file.
What's more, from the D_DEF messages of the default file processing, I never
get a "D_DEF: defvalue(RINGBACK) called", as I think I should get, since all
other parameters (SYSTEM, VERSION,...,TIMEOUT, CONNECT, WAITFOR, etc.) ARE
being called.
It's as if the RINGBACK=YES (plus associated parameters MINRBTIME,
MAXRBTIME, etc.) line did not exist !!! I confirmed that I'm making changes
to the _right_ file, since other changes are acknowledged (tried changing
the INIT and WAITFOR strings, just to see if changes were reflected in the
log file, and they certainly were).
If I were running an old version of uugetty I would be suspecting that it
had no RINGBACK support, but it IS listed in the documentation, and it comes
with an example ringback default file (which I started using, without any
luck).
Let me add that I have tried with different sets of MINRINGS, MAXRINGS,
INTERRING, MINRBTIME and MAXRBTIME values (since I saw that some people got
their problem solved doing just that), and the result is always the same
(except for _maybe_ a slight variation in the instant the modem answers).
BTW, I measured "interring time" in my area to be 5 secs (using 8 in file to
be in the safe side).
I'm sorry if this posting got too long. I just didn't want to leave out any
useful information. I have a full debugging trace of the dial-in call
process, and can provide all (or part of it) to anybody who might want to
look at it.
I hope somebody can shed some light on this. I will greatly appreciate any
help I can get.
Thanks,
Santiago Fisher

What are the permissions on the public_html directories and on the files in
those directories?

Hey, anyone know how I can get this PCI card to work in RedHat Linux 6.0?
I've managed to gather that it needs a Rhine driver of some sort, and even
managed to download the source code for it, but I don't seem to have gcc
installed to compile the driver. Even then, I'm not sure what to do with it.
Thanks...

Mike,
Your routing table looks okay, so that's not it. I think that you
may have a problem with your IP masquerading rules. Rereading your
original post, I noticed that your firewall is not forwarding packets
from your Win95 and Samba machines to your ISP. Nor is your Samba
server forwarding packets from your firewall to the Samba server's eth0
and your Win95 machine (forgive me if this is obvious). Is this what
you have on your Samba server?
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 0/0
And on your firewall, do you have something like
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s 192.168.32.0/24 -d 0/0
If so, try
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s 192.168.0.0/16 -d 0/0
on both your firewall and Samba server. Let me know if this works. If
it doesn't, please lie. ;o)

In my caldera 2.2 I created the script in /etc/rc.d/init.d then I created
symbolic links, from /etc/rc.d/rc3.d, that way the script runs when I turn
on the machine.
