I don't understand what your problem is, but I can tell you what ICMP
is. ICMP is part of the tcp/ip protocol. It is used to for pings and
traceroutes, among other things. It stands for Internet Control Message
Protocol, or something very similar. If you can clarify what your
question is, somebody may be able to help you.

From: Eric deRiel <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have successfully rigged a Linux masquerading firewall as follows:
ipmasqadm autofw -r tcp 6000 7000 -h <address>
where <address> is the IP address of an X server within the
masqueraded network. The intent is to cause X connections opened on the
masquerading computer, which is not running X, to be forwarded to the
internal machine, which is.
What I'm wondering is if it's possible to add another masqueraded X
server to this arrangement so that a remote client can choose which X
server on the internal network it wants to use. It would be easy
enough to forward another port range (16000 to 17000, say) to the
second server, but how does one get an X client to recognize a
non-standard port range? Is there another way to do this that I just
don't see? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a slackware kernel 2.2.6 basic install running samba 2.0.4b and
apache 1.3.6 along with basic ftp, telnet, ect....
The problem I have is that the server will occasionally just lose all
TCP/IP services. The server will show all ok on ifconfig but theres no
ping responce and all services will be unavailable even from the server
itself (ex. lynx 10.1.1.3 from the server results in server not found). I
have stopped the smbd, nmbdm, and httpd and the server will still fail from
time to time. Oddly enuf the server will return to normal after between 10
and 120 seconds, or so. The machine is a Cyrix 200 with a Intel
EtherExpress 10/100b and 64mb ram. Any ideas what causes this strange (and
annoying) problem or what causes the TCP/IP stack will return on its own?
Many thanks.

Did you check the mixer settings? Try running xmixer or something. Also: you
must have sound card support compiled as a module in the kernel.

Hi all,
I have an NE2000 compatible network card (It's actually a LAN Research
LR2000).
I do not know what the jumper settings relate too and I have no
documentation etc.
I can put it in a Linux machine or a Windows machine.
Does anyone know of a utility for either Linux or Windows that will try to
work out what the IRQ/Address is for this card, with the jumpers as they
are?
Many thanks,

I had a similar problem just yesterday. I don't know if this will
help you, but to make a long story short: my masquerading box did not
accept certain crucial updates to it's DHCP settings from the ISP and
as a result, name resolution stopped working. I just killed and
restarted my dhpc client and things began to work immediately.
If this doesn't help (or doesn't apply), you should try using tcpdump
on both your internal and external interface at the same time while
you try to connect to an http site. It should shed some light on
things.

I am curious if there is anyway to network a
Linux box with a Win9x machine using the parallel

I have viewed the PLIP miniHOW-TO but found that
it only talked mostly about Linux to Linux

I don't have the money to go and purchase NICs
and a hub so this is my only option.
Any help would be greatly apprecitated.

I have the driver downloaded and I'm soon going to reconfigure the 2.2.10

getting the driver to work? You had to install RH 6 instead of or on top of

The cable modem is an external device. It has nothing to do with pnp. It
connects to the computer via a network card interface. The network card will
most likely be pnp. But I've got two generic PCI ne2000-compatible NICs (the
cheapest/most generic kind) and they work great -- no problems whatsoever.
Oh yeah, you can't buy a cable modem in a store anyway. And strictly
speaking it's not even a modem. It's more like a router. They just decided
to call it that way. But anyway, as you (hopefully) have guessed, the kind
of modem they give you is irrelevant, since it is external and connects to
the computer via a network card.

sending email out from the box, or remotely retrieving my mail via
POP. I currently have an account with @home and a curently stable IP.
In test #1, I can send email by using an IP address with no problem.
When viewing the email, I noticed that my host name was cutoff from
the address.
In test #2, the Hotmail server could not find that abbreviated
address. I understand why this does not work, but thought I would try
it.
In test #3, I tried sending mail using the full name, but that was
bounced back also.
In the test #4, I sent this email out while I was actually sitting in

In final test #5, it seems my computer sees the mail, but refused it
for some reason?? Any ideas??
