Michel,
You are a definite godsend!
You would not believe the troubles I have had for 2 weeks with trying to
connect. (just see my "BULLSHIT" post at the top of the list.)
Unbelievable how your 1 sentence advise at the bottom of this post was the
answer to my prayers. Everyone else had me running ragged changing
everything but my underwear :)
Thanks Again,
Mark

Subject: Networking advise for a Newbie
Date: Sun, 8 Aug 1999 14:28:13 +1000
Hello everyone:
I am trying to network two computers (486 & Pentium). I've got it working
in Windows... easy.
I am wondering if there is a document which can help me with IPX and TCP.
I've looked at some of the HOWTO's (IPX-HOWTO Ethernet-HOWTO)
I don't understand a whole lot about how the interfaces work, and I don't
know what linux is doing that make it work (or not).
I have an NE2000 compatible (isa) in the 486, and a DEC21041 and a
DEC21040(not used) in the pentium. Can someone give me the path where the
config file are? Are there any quirks to be aware of with these
interfaces?
One more think. ifconfig gives me TX errors (2 of them). I assume that
to mean that transmitting packets isn't successful. It recieves them ok
though.

Hi,
I want to search all the *.c & *.h files of Linux source.
Similar to the "cscope" in Unix.
Can any one of you pl., "point me" or "post me" the bin
file of cscope.
Note::
The URL "http://www.zork.net/src/linux/" will do the
same(for Linux 2.0.28 kernel) but I want to have the
same features in my own linux box having the latest version.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: Converting an NT server to Redhat 6.0
Date: Sun, 8 Aug 1999 03:05:50 -0400
I would like to convert a Pentium 100mhx computer with Windows NT 4 server
to redaht 6.0. Currently, i have 3 Windows 9x computers and another Redhat
6 client that connect to the server. The windows 9x machines login to the
server, making sure only the right people con login. I have it using
microsoft networking with the NT maching as a Domain Controller. All the 9x
machine users must then have their login verified by the domain server to
access windows. If I put redhat 6 on that computer, can I do anything
similar to restrict access on the 9x machines (on the server side, i don't
want to have to configure every computer if a new person comes or goes).
Thanks for any help you can provide. Please e-mail me, since i have a
rather slow newsserver, and don't check here often.

Subject: cannot telnet into redhat
Date: 8 Aug 1999 01:24:04 -0500
This isn't as newbie'ish as it looks--I hope. :) It may turn out to
be real trivial. I'm running RH 5.2. I recently had to fix a problem
where my ISP was changing my HOSTNAME, so I changed it to something
that it wouldn't want to change, essentially. But once I did that, no
matter what I config hosts.allow to, it won't let me telnet to my main
machine. I have two machines networked. 10.0.2.1 (nivdome) can
telnet/ftp/rsh to 10.0.2.1 (keldome), but the reverse is not true.
Here is my:
/etc/hosts.deny
ALL:ALL
---
/etc/hosts.allow
ALL:LOCAL .suth.net .someotherhost.net .someotherhost2.net
---
/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost.suth.net localhost
10.0.2.1 nivdome.suth.net nivdome
10.0.2.2 keldome.suth.net keldome
---
/etc/hosts.equiv
10.0.2.2
keldome
keldome.suth.net
---
/etc/sysconfig/network
NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME="localhost.suth.net"
DOMAIN=suth.net
---
the quotation marks above may have something to do with it. There is
other stuff in this file.
Whatever the reason, I get server has disconnected connection with
ftp/telnet and no such file, directory with rsh. Any clues would be
greatly appreciated. I'm beginning to think I may have over
engineered the HOSTNAME problem, and all it took was to change the
name server search from hosts,DNS to DNS,hosts (which I have done).
Thanks

I'm sure this has been asked a dozen times, but I can't find the specifc
answer I'm looking for so here goes:
I've got my box dual booting to win98 and linux RH6 with two NICs -- one
NIC to the Internet(ADSL - 1 static IP) one to the LAN (girlfriend's
computer).
On Win98 I'm running WinProxy so that one NIC & IP is connected to the
Internet and the other NIC & IP acts as the proxy so my girlfriend can
surf on the same connection.
How do I duplicate something like this on Linux with the two NICs?
thanks in advance for the help!
