I have a SDSL 384/384 installed by GTE. They claim to have it connected to
GTI in Texas. When a GTI person came out to set up the Internet service, he
said he didn't know anything about Slakware, only "pump" on Red Hat. He left
with the service not working because he couldn't find the Red Hat tools on
the system. I have set up the IP-Masquerading and the second NIC (eepro100
= eth1) myself as per various FAQ(s) and HowTo(s). When I do a ping from the
linux box on an IP which is not in my local net, I see the receive light on
the port box connected to the DSL modem flash periodically (about once a
second), but no indication of response (ping hangs). After Ctrl-C, doing an
ifconfig shows eth1 with 10 to 20 Tx packets but no Rx packets. I assume
this means nothing is coming back. Anyone know of a recipe to make this
work?
Also, I rebuilt kernel as stated in HowTo(s) to include IP_MASQ, ..PACKETS
and socket ..FILTERS, but dhcp_client fails with a message saying
"FILTERS..." not in kernel. The .config file in /usr/src/linux says =y for
all of the referenced options and both make config and make xconfig confirm
these. Yes, I did "cp ...zImage /vmlinuz; make modules; make
modules_install; lilo. Is there a problem with linux-2.2.6??

What OS is the machine with the CD-ROM running? I'm guessing Windows
Something... :-) Get an ftp server package, like CuteFTP or WarFTP.
That'll let you use that CD-ROM.

Hi Pedro,
I'm not familiar with Suse, which version of kernel, ppp, kppp etc. it
uses, but...

1. kppp that comes with kdenetwork-1.1.1pre2 works very good for me. In
fact it is the best internet connection utility I have ever seen.
Earlier versions may have problems, I don't know.

2. The fact that modem diag works intermittently, makes me think there
must be something wrong with modem setup. Please ensure that there is no
irq conflicts, and use /dev/ttyS? instead of /dev/modem or /dev/cua?
device names. A common symptom of irq conflict is: modem responds pretty
slow to commands. Check it with "minicom" (or similar utility) before
trying kppp. By default, kernel sets same irq lines for COM1 & COM3
(irq4) and for COM2 & COM4 (irq3). If your modem uses -say- COM3/irq5,
then you must tell the kernel explicitly to use irq5 for ttyS2. See "man
setserial" for this.

I always get my used 10Mbps cards on the internet dirt cheap.

The latest deal I got was 5 hp cards for about $15 including shipping.

Ok, I have RH 6.0 and access internet through ADSL connection, DHCP.
Internet works great. But when I login I get a message saying my host name
(a combination of letters and numbers given to me by my isp) is unreachable
on the internet and may cause Gnome not to work properly, so I should enter
my host name into the etc/hosts file. I do this, but upon bootup I get the
same message, and when I check the hosts file the line I entered is gone.

With LinuxConfig I entered my host name in the box it gives me. Should I be
entering my entire net address instead? Any ideas?

Thanks to all replies - so far you guys have been a great help :)

Hi.

I have a home LAN that will soon have ADSL access. I am trying to
give only some of the users on my LAN Internet access while
prohibiting others from doing so. One method I thought of is matching
IP addresses to corresponding mac addresses. That is, my Linux server
will check to make sure that a certain computer that has been assigned
a certain IP address will have a certain mac address before access is
given. I haven't been able to locate such an option in the I.P.

I have installed sendmail with SuSe 6.0, and am satisfied with it. For it
you need SMTP server, and for fetchmail or procmail the POP3 Server.

i've got samba setup and working on my linux box, and can browse the
shares i've setup in samba.conf from both my windoze nt and 98 machines.
the problem comes up with write access, which i don't have setup right.
when i try to delete, create, whatever from my 98 machine it gives me an
access is denied error. i could only get samba to work by setting the
security mode = server and the password server pointing to my nt machine.
i've setup a user account in linux and nt for the account i have in 98,
and matched passwords on them all, but no dice. i've been reading most
posts in these newsgroups and several different web sites and haven't
gotten much of anywhere, since most are about the initial setup and not
the user configuration i think i need... any help would be appreciated!

You could get sendmail to not check the domains, add to .mc file:
FEATURE(accept_unresolvable_domains)

Another way might be to have your own cacheing DNS and use ipchains
to control access to it, i.e. add/remove rules in ip-down/ip-up.

Is it requiring an environment variable to be set which isn't
set when called from ip-up?

As a vague knowledge, I think it is spawned by inetd upon a remote ident
request. Some sites (especially security concious ones) send ident
request to you when you attempt to enter some directory or download
something, to get/validate your user-id etc. But it should terminate and
die upon serving that request, i think.

Ok, this is several problems, but ill answer everything i can. for FTP over a
gateway, you MUST use PASV transfer. (it is in configuration in most modern FTP's
(Cute, Eleete, BPFTP)) otherwise the world sees the linux box, and your linuxbox gets
the file request and looks at it dumb, not knowing what to do with it. As for the
rest of it, your most likely problem is that you have, no offense, problematic
hardware. unfortunately, when two computers are communicating over an ethenet 2 feet
away, you often get collissions, and the retry is often too close to make a
differense, so repeated collisions often occur. This will occasionally cause
problems. Make sure that the subnet on the Windows computer is 255.255.255.0 (which
is in the control panel / networking / ethenet card ) Otherwise your linuxbox is
doing double duty and probly doesnt appreciate it.

As for quake, if either computer is running a BG task, or communicating over a SLOW
network (< 10MBPS) it can cause lag. Finally, check all the cableing to make sure it
is tightly connected. Jiggle it to see if it makes it appear disconnected to the hub.
if it does, invest in new cables.

Hope it helps!

Subject: Re: Network Security

The easiest method is to assign ip addresses (can be done with DHCP, in
/etc/dhcpd.conf, at the end

 host Celery {
  hardware ethernet 00:10:4B:65:1C:3A;
  fixed-address Celery.House;
 }

Use named normally, i think manual assigns work)

Then using ipchains,

ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -F forward
ipchains -A forward -s Celery.House -j MASQ

Doing this for each one would allow internet access to Celery.House, and you can
repeat the last line accordingly, it would then deny gateway access to any other
computers on the network (and internet) but allow intranet access to it for other
services (such as DHCP and DNS).

Unfortunately, ipchains has not created a method to lookup MAC addresses, but
honestly, assigning named addresses is usually easier.

Finally, if you can refer to a computer for lookup by name (your DNS is dynamic) you
can ipchain by name so you dont have to deal with DHCP at all. So for simplicity, if
Bob.Network ALWAYS points to Bobs computer (or even just BOB) then your ipchains can
use '-d BOB -j MASQ' and the lookup will be automatic.

Hope it helps!

Your problem is that your HOSTNAME in linux is used by default to send mail.

Your problems a bit vague, but if you want mail to say its coming from an address such
as [EMAIL PROTECTED], you must set this on the client in (i.e. PINE, or Netscape
EMail) (if your using 'mail' your in trouble. Essentially, you need to make your
computer think its on that domain, so it would have to be hostnamed earthlink.net with
the username matching the one you expect to get mail on (so, if you sent from root,
youd better expect to get mail on [EMAIL PROTECTED], or piss off some earthlink
profs). If you want your linuxbox to act as a mailserver, you need to give it a
static ip or name (Try ez-ip.net for a name) and hostname it to the matching name.

Hope it helps!

use linuxconf to adjust Name Server (DNS) settings, under there you have two choices,
if your win 98 box is a DNS proxy server, you should be able to use that ip address.
Otherwise call your ISP and get their DNS IP and enter it there.

TIK was killed by the evil MS / AOL wars. My personal reccomendation is to go to
www.freshmeat.net and look for GAIM. Its nicer and more stable anyway ;-) The latest
version is quite nice and fully compatible w/ chats (though not Files, then again,
neither was TIK)

OK. You've got 2 ISPs and you want to use one most of the time and another one only
for certain hosts/nets. Did I get it right?

If so, all you have to do is to set up the routes to these "special" hosts.
To do that use "route add -host my.special.host gw ADSL.isp.gateway". To set up route
to a net, use "route add -net my.special.net netmask special.netmask.goes.here gw
ADSL.isp.gateway".

As networking stack uses 'default' route as a last resort, ADSL will be used to access
my.special.host an my.special.net.

It has some limitations, though. Routing is done on an IP address basis. It means,
that if my.special.host has multiple IPs you will have to either set route to the
subnet these hosts are on or you will have to setup a route for each IP address.

Have fun.

just use the "route" command.

for both connections you know the gateway through which you reah the internet via that
connection.
on ppp connections it is the remote machines IP ... on shared medium networks like
ethernet it is the routers address.
on the static link you know the IP of your gateway .. and on the dhcp one you also get
that information along with your dynamic ip.

so you can do this:

route add -host www.ibm.com gw static_gw

route add -host www.cnn.com gw dyn_gw

and so on ...

for a whole network try this:

route add -net x.y.z.c gw static_gw netmask 255.255.0.0

The easiest way is to go into your bios (Usually DEL at bootup) and find PNP settings.
Choose for PNP OS: NO or DISABLED. Then see if linux and windows make them both play
nicely ;-)
