Subject: Linux as NFS-Server for IRIX/Solaris/Digital Unix

Hi outthere,

I don't know if someone has solved it jet, but it seems at least the to
people I send this mssg to have similar problems as I.

I use a linux box as an NFS server for IRIX, linux and OSF/1 -Machines.
It got it running with the kernel-based NFS-Server in SuSE 6.1 (suse may
not very popular, but I'm sure redhat has a kernel-NFS, too)

The "permission denied" Peter Camenzind gets when mounting, may be due
to using different nfs-versions. IRIX needs "nfs2" as filesystem type in
fstab, it is "nfs vers=2" in OSF/1. Maybe something similar on Solaris.

By the way Kernel-based NFS-Server needs a >2.2.X Kernel, so 2.0.36
won't work.

My problem now is : The linux-nfs server drops down after a few days.
When wotring on the IRIX-Machine I get
"stale nfs handle; unable to determine current directory" smthing like
that.

Then I try to restart the server on the linux box, but it complains:

/sbin/init.d/nfsserver restart
Shuting down [...]
cannot[...]: address already in use.

after that, only a reboot helps me out (for about 2 days...)

Any hints ?

Thanks,
cr

Depends. In most cases, you will need to rent a second IP address from
your cable modem provider. They usually charge around $5/IP extra.
However, as you run already Linux, you should be looking into IP
Masquerading. Just get a second ethernet card for the machine that is
already connected and use it to hook up the second PC (just use a
crossover cable, no hub required to link the two PCs).

You shouldn't shut down Windows with the power switch either; I've
often seen Windows running ScanDisk on startup because somebody turned
it off. Linux does exactly the same thing, it's just called fsck
instead of ScanDisk (and it (in my experience) prompts you to run it
yourself rather than just doing it for you, which gives you the
opportunity to fix any other problems which may have arisen).

Filesystems should always be unmounted cleanly because, for efficiency
reasons, the kernel does not necessarily write data to them
immediately an application requests it to, but waits for some
appropriate time to do so. (Disk reads and writes are slow.) This data
may include modified superblocks and inodes - filesystem management
objects. When you request that a filesystem be unmounted, the kernel
does a sync(), which synchronizes the disk with the data in memory. If
this is not done, then your filesystem may be inconsistent.

The alternative is slowness whenever you try to do anything with a
disk. In my experience, whenever Linux boots into single-user mode
after a failed fsck, it has always told me what to do (though this is
dependent on the boot scripts included with your installation), so I
don't really see that this is a problem.

The main issue about connecting to a cable modem is to get the dhcp
client running. Use 'netcfg' to do so in RedHat 5.2.

Or, make sure your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file looks
like this:

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=yes

(this is assuming the cable modem ethernet card is eth0).

identifying print servers and locating and getting router details.

Is this information to be found in the standard networking files or am

Hi all,

Thanks for the help on my dial-up server problem.

However it is still not working.

Some people said I should enable ip_forwarding
To do it I tried the following.
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv1/ip_forwarding
The value is then '1' but when I reboot it change to '0' again.

I also added the following line to my rc.config
IP_FORWARD = "yes"

After reboot ip_forwarding was still down.

How can I make it work ?

An update - following some recent postings here, I thought that may be the
kernel's is at fault, so I have re-installed my RH 6.0 and did not install
any kernel or networking updates.

I followed the advice in the 'PPP HOWTO', dialed in with minicom, started

I changed my setup to use PAP, but still no go.

You could try changing the modem init string in Kppp. Make sure it enables
compression and error-control and uses hardware flow control. If this solves
your problem, then your problem was that Kppp was getting gibberish from the
server due to lack of one of the above mentioned settings....if not, try
enabling the log window and tell us the messages....

Yep, I did those two. The modules are in the correct place
(/lib/modules/2.2.5-15/net) and are loaded when the ppp starts up
(lsmod
reports slhc and ppp), and the ppp connection works fine (I'm using it
for
this). I'm really quite stumped as to what is going on. Does anyone
know
what the significance of the numbers after the "ppp0:" is? I assume
this is
just attempt number.

Maybe I'll just upgrade the kernel to 2.2.10 and see if it goes
away....???

BTW, thanks for the reply.

Regards,
Russell Mora.

If you are online the whole time you should set up a cron entry that
would check the mail every like 10 minutes. Try "man cron" for more
information.

You should place .fetchmailrc in /root if you are going to fetch mail for
more users.

You need to setup fetchmail (for fetching messages your mail server),
sendmail (for sending messages to your mail server) and install the imap
rpm package. They all come with rh 6.0.

Dan,

Yeah. Finally, I was able to find some time and compiled the source and
attached the module to the kernel.

Your help has been invaluable.
Thank you
John Nunez
