Hi folks,
we are running here a couple of NFS servers and dual PII systems, still using
2.0.* kernels and NFS V2.
Some servers see at time high load, and some good fraction of the load is often
due to read/write and sometimes even deletion of large files. I consider a file
large if it has 100-500 Mbyte.
We have seen situations with pretty bad NFS response times (hangs of 10 sec
and more) and wonder, what the mechanisms behind are, and what possible
strategies to improve things could be.
I'm specifically suspicious about two things and appreciate input on that:
1. It seems, that deleting a large file locks down the whole file system
for a macroscopic time. For example, I rm'ed a *local* 500 Mb file in one
window and often, though not always, saw an `ls' on the same file system
block until the `rm' completed.
2. It seems, that `write' system are sometime blocked when a large amount
of cache buffers are flushed. For example, programs that write to a
*local* file with a large rate (e.g. 6 Mb/sec) often show a very
oscillarory CPU consumption, which is correlated with the flush
activities.
It seems, that in both cases a `global lock' gets in the way, and it's clear,
that such behaviour could result in bad NFS resonse times when some clients
handle large files while others expect good performance for small files.
* I wonder if somebody could comment on this ...
* Are there are any knobs available to improve this ?
* Are 2.2 kernels and NFS V3 going to address these issues ?
With best regards, Walter

You can gdbm. It has compatibility modes for dbm and ndbm and should
work ok.

Patrick,
If that's *all* you have in the config, you're *not* protecting anything! See
the excellent and lucid IPCHAINS-HOWTO (backward translatable to ipfwadm
commands with some effort) for a very good explanation of the various
capabilities of this software suite. Essentially it does masquerade,
firewalling and proxy, and each sort of independently. You've just got the
packet-masquerade part set up. You still need to set up the firewall rules to
protect your LAN.
Good luck,
Geoff.

I want to use a DE-220 nic on a Linux machine (486sx66 ..... router

But not the Dlink ..........

All-
I'm having problems connecting to a port. I'm able to telnet on port
25 and access my web page on port 80 but my perl script is refused
connection no matter what port I chose. The server and client pair runs
fine inbetween my unix boxes but when I run the server on my linux box
the client is unable to connect.
I've removed my hosts.allow and hosts.deny files and tried to open my
system wide open. Is there anyway to "test" each port independently,
like a ping to a port?
Sincerely,

I am running Samba on a 486 with 8Mb of ram and I have a small 211Mb

The printer is a Brother HL-6 laser printer.
I have already printed off a copy of printing-howto, but I feel I might

Yes, they are more expensive then most. They are also well engineered,
thoroughly tested and compatible. Since you didn't mention a specific
alternative I can't be more specific. But, IMHO you get what you pay for.

Well I'm not sure what's going on. The good news is, I got kppp working. I
can surf with netscape I can receive e-mail, I can read news groups (though
I don't like either Netscape's or Kde's newsreaders, their confusing). The
bad news is, I spent a VERY long time writing a post, and KRN just swallowed
it up, it said it posted it, but obviously it's not here. And I've only been
able to get 1 e-mail out of 10 tries to anybody. Last night I wrote a short
note from my Windows computer, but it didn't make it here either. Strange.
And then, today, I tried to run the Mandrake update. I realized that I had
WAY to much stuff selected, and canceled it. It wouldn't stop so (stupid me)
I killed it. the I went back and tried it again, and it had an error reading
the list of update. So I decided to restart. The short story here is, it
found something wrong "/dev/hdc1 was not cleanly mounted", dumped me into
the command line, told me to run fsck manually, which I did per instructions
in Running Linux, and now it says it found 6 duplicate/bad blocks "Clone
duplicate/bad blocks<y>?"
Should I tell it yes? Is it gonna blow up my whole system? I can the exact
wording of what's on the screen if iI need to.

If you know the places you connect to replace -s 0/0 and -d 0/0 with -s
theGameServer'sIPAddress and -d theGameServer'sIPAddress. Also use ! -y

Weirdest thing...
I tried your suggestion and it didn't work, but then out of curiosity,
I tried using PAP as my authentication method, and it worked fine.
I felt pretty dumb for not trying that in the first place, but oh well.
Now the real mystery is, why does my one machine work okay with just
a chat script and the other requires PAP? It's weird. Oh well. (:

For instance:
chat -r /root/connect.msg -f /root/chat.script
And the file /root/chat.script contains something like:
REPORT CONNECT
ABORT BUSY
ABORT 'NO CARRIER'
'' ATDT08222112500
CONNECT '\d\c'
This will write the whole 'CONNECT' line received from modem, to the
file /root/connect.msg
If you don't specify "-r" option to chat, but still use the REPORT
keyword, then chat will write it to standard error instead of
/root/connect.msg
Note: Unfortunately it is not possible to have this level of control
over chat with kppp. So, you can't use kppp for this.
All the best,

Actually, I want to graph the connection rate so that I know what it is
at any given time (I am using MRTG package for this). So I need to get
the connection rate (be it the initial connection rate) and keep on
feeding it to MRTG till the connection drops (for whatever reason).
After the modem reconnects, I need to store the new connection rate
somewhere so that I can feed this into MRTG. I would need a shell
script and I can do the interface with MRTG. But my problem is how to
get the connection rate in the first place? It is a PPP link, so if I
can tell chat command to store it someplace, then I can access it from
my script. Any ideas?

I talked to my ISP and they claim they don't use PAP/CHAP, but since they say

they told me to call them tonight when I connect and they will do a ppp trace on
