I have a 3Com 905B-TX in my RedHat 5.2 box and it worked right from the
install. It was detected at install time and it never failed me. Are you
sure there wasn't a PnP or IRQ problem with the card? The standard RedHat
5.2 kernel can handle all the 3Com90x series cards very well.

Try the zmodem transfer protocol, type "rz" on the machine you telneted

Hello,
First off I want to thank all the people who anser posts on this group.
You guys ROCK. Now I just have a quick question about setting up a LAN
with IP-Masquerading. I have a LINUX that I plan to use as the
"gateway" (or masq-gate...i dont what exactly to call it) with the
actual IP address. I will be using a cable modem connection to access
the internet.
Do I need to have 2 ethernet cards installed in the masq-gate machine or
can I get by with just the one?
I was hoping I could just put all the machines on the one HUB and
connect the uplink to the cable rather than connecting the cable to one
ethernet card and the rest of the LAN to the other card. Please let me
know. I am fairly new to LINUX, but I am really looking forward to
setting up my apartment. Thanks.

Hi;
Well trying modprobe with all the various settings only results in the
above statement.
Furthermore compiling the 3c509 into the kernel did not help at all - the
kernel does not recognize the card at startup. Quite frankly I am at the
pulling out of hair stage!
3c509 has either 0x300 0x310 0x320 or 0x350 with ether irq=5 or 7 or 10
(correct?)
Anyboby has any suggestions?

Hi,
has anyone had any luck getting a Gateway "Telepath 56K" modem
working under Linux?
It was the only modem Gw had in stock, and I had to get an upgrade as
the factory-installed modem was a 3COM Winmodem (ack!), despite the fact
that I specifically ordered a non-winmodem in the system. D'oh!
/proc/pci reports it as a Lucent communications device, unknown.
Please respond with experiences by email, if possible.

To use this, you need ppp-protocol. Read the ppp-howto (/urs/doc/howto)
.

For this you have to use IPMasq and you can add firewall if you want to
have a secure internet-connection.

I have EQL working fine with serial connections. It works great and
it does an excellent job with increasing bandwidth. However, this is
not
my problem. I am trying to have two connections to the internet. One
via my EQL/PPP (that works fine by itself) out to the internet via one
internet provider and the other via my ethernet card
utilizing a cable modem out to the internet via another internet
provider.
EQL is primarily for serial connection and not ethernet. When utilizing
it
for ethernet, my EQL interface freezes leaving only my ethernet
connection
working or it freezes all together. If you know anything else that will
work, I would greatly appreciate it.

Subject: Problems with SMC8013/RedHat 6.0
Date: Fri, 13 Aug 1999 21:31:22 GMT
I recently installed RedHat 6.0 on a Pentium 133
with an SMC Ethercard Plus Elite 16 Combo
(WD/8013). The card is hard configured on IRQ 10,
I/O base address 300. Red Hat does not detect the
card when I boot the system.
I am sure that there are no hardware conflicts
with the above settings... it worked fine with
WIN95 on the same computer.
I have done the following:
- Tested the card using the DOS utility that came
with the card. I am able to send and receive
packets with another computer on the network.
- Tried re-installing RedHat with other (soft)
card settings- still not detected.
- Used the GNOME Kernel configurator to specify
eth0 module wd io=0x300 irq=10 mem=0cc000. After
doing this I receive the following message when
Linux boots:
Delaying eth0 initialization
....................FAILED
This seems to point to the driver as the problem,
but all the documentation that I have been able
to find indicates that the wd driver should work
with this card.
Any suggestions as to what I could do next would
be greatly appreciated. TIA

Actually most stacks use the BSD time-wait hack (sanctioned by RFC1122).
When a new connection attempt with a sequence number after the last
sequence number used by the old connection occurs the time-wait is dropped
early and the connection request is processed.
Of course this can cause problems on networks where the bandwidth*rtt
product is a significant part of the TCP sequence space (that the new
connection will receive old data left over from the old connection) - at
least Linux 2.2 doesn't do PAWS for time-wait sockets.

In Linux (what the original poster was using) it can be tuned with
the /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_local_port_range sysctl. Changing the
default range can often cause problems with firewalls.
It won't do cycling over IP aliases automatically though, if someone
wants that he has to hand code it via bind(2).

Do you have a route for internal network ? Like
route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0
If you have this and the cables are ok you should be able to ping
to/from win machines/linux. Then add masquerade rules and enable ip
forwarding, set default gateway on win machines to be 192.168.1.1 and
when the ppp connection on linux is established, you should be able to
ping an external host as well.
(BTW, first make sure the kernel sees your network card ok -> dmesg
|grep eth )

How about using the following script as /bin/noshell:

and add this to /etc/shells ? This would also allow them to telnet to

Folks:
Simply, I am wondering how best to go about slapping
a second NIC into a RH5.2 box, such that the machine
will host 2 IPs.
The reason I want to do this is so that Macs can get
a particular share simply by using a particular IP.
IN other words, 192.168.2.1 gives 'em XYZ and
192.168.2.2 gives 'em ABC. I think I know how to tell
netatalk how to do this, I just don't know how to host
the two IPs (same subnet) on one machine.
I don't want to do IP aliasing (2 IP on one NIC) but,
if that turns out to be the only way, I will use it.
Channel bonding is way cool, but won't really give me
what I need, either, since it'd still leave me with
one interface (albeit a very fast one.)
I've already installed the second NIC, added the stuff
to my /etc/lilo.conf, and have even gotten the card all
recognised, etc., on bootup. However, in this setup,
it is not possible to ping EITHER card, or the LAN.
IP fowarding, etc., are compiled into the kernel.
A plain `ifconfig` does not show eth1, although an
`ifconfig eth1` will - the NIC is not up.
Thanks,

Maybe you have a /etc/modules.conf instead - they are both valid names.
Read the current kerneld Howto, which tells how ( and why ) to create this

if it works, and it does! However, if the script is called from
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit the script will leave out the ipaddress and
resolved fields, leaving them blank.
Any ideas on how I could get the script to include these varables when
called at bootup??
Thanks for any help....
Lastly the sleep 60 allows time for the modem to dial, connect,
negotiate and so forth.

As I learned just this week you have to run `insmod ip_masq_ftp` on your
firewall machine.

[Replies to [EMAIL PROTECTED] preferred. Thanks.]
I've installed the Mandrake 6.0 release, which is based on Red Hat
6.0, onto a ThinkPad laptop. I want to reach it via telnet and ftp
from other machines.
(A.) FTP problems
I can do both 'ftp localhost' and 'telnet localhost' successfully on
this machine.
When I try to ftp to it from another Solaris machine, there are two
users I can try:
1. "emp" -- lets me log in, but when I do an "ls" or "mput", the ftp
client hangs.
2. "omni" -- after I enter the password, it hangs.
I installed wu.ftp in the inet.conf file.
(B.) telnet problems
When I try to connect from another machine, it finds the machine's
correct IP address, but hangs after spewing "Escape character is
'^]'.". What do I need to do?
(C.) web-browsing problems
The Netscape Communicator 4.? browser can see local machines, and it
can see our trusty old faraway machine, www.adobe.com, but it can't
see www.omnimark.com, which does lie outside a firewall. I have to
specify its IP # to reach it.
Any pointers on what I should do?

I had the same problem with an external modem, at least on the part of
Looking up site. If your browser is looking for DNS server forever, try
to disable the Flow control and try again. Worked for me ;-)
