Actually, I have had difficulty with linux (rh5.2) not initialising a
3c509 clone pcmcia card properly, and rewriting its MAC to
ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff. Could I make it work - not bloody likely !!
in the end, I got so desperate, that I added a line to my rc.local
sleep 10
ifconfig eth0 hw ether 00aabbccdd11
(a bogus mac, but whatever).
maybe you can grab the real mac address, and do something similar.
ps- I have seen a couple for cards which allow the user to override the
"unique" mac.
strange eh.

Subject: FTP install of RH6.0 on @home network
Date: Sun, 15 Aug 1999 14:27:36 GMT
I was wondering if anyone could help me with a small problem I am running
into doing an FTP install (my 486 does'nt have a CD-ROM) on a computer I
wish to use as IP-Masqurading on.
I am using 3Com509b cards (I have disabled the plug and play on them yes
and I know the settings I have asssigned them i.e. IO and IRQ do not
conflict cause windows 98 saw them no problem and connected to the @home
system)
I use a boonet.img floppy to boot the system and then go thought the
questions, selecting in FTP install and then static IP address. Filing out
all my info that both @home and winipcfg gave me about my settings. However
when I put in the FTP site and Directory I get errors. This is where the odd
things start to happen. I usually get a "bad server responce" error but can
also get "unable to connect to server" error. I have yet to get it to
connect to ANYTHING this way. I played with the Path (to the 2nd stage
install image) and one time I did, by putting in the wronge path, got the
modem lights to flash much more vigerously than before before spitting out
the error "could not find file".
I am only working with one NIC in the machine right now in case they were
interfearing with each other, and have swapped cards making sure it was'nt
the card. no luck.
I have hooked up a windows 98 box and it saw both cards (in legacy mode)
and I was able to rin winproxy with them just fine so I know its not the
cards.
Whats odd is that in digging through winipcfg I did get a dhcp server addy.
however if I chose DHCP method of install I get a bad rescponce. (might just
be a dead end)
I would REALLY appreciate any help and NOT have to go to a windows box to
use for my proxy.

I've been locking down my machine (RH6/cable modem access) and so far, so good.
I noticed the other night that someone had established connections to me. I
used netstat -a to see the connections but couldn't find how to actually break
their connections.
Short of stopping eth0 and restarting it how can I do this?

Hi,
I have a Sharp Actius A250 notebook and have installed RedHat 6.0 on it.
So far, none of the built-in peripherials works except the video, which
I managed to get 800x600 true color.
However, I can't get neither the modem, sound nor Network to work. It
has a Realtek RTL8139A PCI Fast Ethernet NIC built-in and I have tried
the version 1.80a driver (written by Donald Becker) rtl8139.c without luck.
Whenever I try to 'ifconfig eth0 up', it gives me the following message:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Resource temporarily unavailable
I can ping localhost and ping the self IP address and has no problem,
but the eth0 interface is never up and running.
I can live without its sound nor modem, but the LAN is a must.
Thanks a lot,
Edwin

My cdrom works fine but not the zip drive. I do not understand this.
I use Windows 98 vfat on the zip drive. Original zip disks use

Not sure this is a solution to your problem.
There is software available (or some kind of settings) for sharing INTERNET
ACCESS. Checkout www.homepcnetwork.com.
Hope it helps.

One of the things you should always retain a copy of is the
/usr/src/linux/.config file. It's created when you make config or
menuconfig, or xconfig), and lists all the items in the kernel and all the
modules to be attached. If reinstalling, copy the .config file into that
directory, and make your original kernel/modules combination again.
As for your problem, you've committed a cardinal sin when asking for help.
We don't know what you have there.
What kind of card is it?
Finally, the file you're thinking of is probably /etc/conf.modules.

The redirector in win98 changed and basically broke the acceptance of
passwords. You can even enter the correct password and win98 will not
accept it. Two solutions. There is a registry hack for 98 and NT which
will allow you to use plain text passwords and thus move up to user level
security or you can implement passwords on your linux box that are
encrypted. I always have done the 98 registry hack here at the house.
I would get the Learn Samba in 24 hours book for a good explanation on all
this. Helped me a lot. The samba mailing list is a good resource also.

Hi,
Amir, if I understand your questions properly then your mount point does not
exist at this time since you have not done a Linux install. When you boot
the boot disk for the install for a new OS install just default to the
bootdisk by pressing return. You will then be queried for the rootdisk to be
swappped with the bootdisk.
Once you are up login as root then do a FDISK to setup the Linux partition.
This is not that cryptic but will allow you set the partition sizes as you
desire. There are a lot of utilities out in Linuxland to allow you different
ways to do this but Fdisk is not that complicated. Once you have this done
then you can exit fdisk then do your setup.
Welcome to Linuxland!

The reason behind a MSD-style program is to be able to accurately
troubleshoot hardware. I did find that Linuxconf, and /var/log/messages were
helpful, but it would helpful if all of this available under one command.
The trouble I was having last night was due to the fact that I had a modem,
ttyS0, *and* my eth0 all using IRQ3. I overlooked my ether card as being a
potential source of the entire problem. I went through and reconfigured the
hardware this morning, and now everything runs much, much better. Linuxconf
did not seem to accurately report my IRQ at first, until I adjusted the
parameters to point it out to the proper IRQ.

Thanks everybody,
I got it working.
I just learned the difference between forwarding and masquerading.
The Nt server was forwarding the packets from inside the networks (
192.168.x) and the routing table in the cisco was not ready for those
addresses, because they are not legal internet addresses.

Ok, Ihave found the frle-0.22 driver, which should work with a 2.0 kernel,

There is *no* documentation how to install the driver source files into the
