What exactly are you trying to accomplish? If you simply want to run Linux
as a file server (much like I do), you can install and run samba. It's all
ready to go if you are running RH 6.0. Just go to /etc/smb.conf and make
the changes for your WORKGROUP and for what ip domains you want to access
it. Now kill and restart samba, "/etc/rc.d./init.d/smb restart"
Once that is done, it becomes a simple matter of setting up the printers
either on the Win95 box or the Linux box.
Questions, drop me a line.

Subject: Installing a driver
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 20:06:22 +0000

I have finally figured out what has plagued my ethernet card for so
long. It seems that the older pci bus I have can only handle 16bit
words and my ethernet card/driver are set for 32bit. So I went into the
driver and commented out the line for IO_LONG as the instructions on the
driver web site. The problem is after I compile it with the options at
the end of the driver file and replace the old ne2k-pci.o with the newly
compiled ne2k-pci.o I get two unresolved symbol errors.

/lib/modules/2.2.9-19mdk/net/ne2k-pci.o: unresolved symbol
init_etherdev_Rd9e75361
/lib/modules/2.2.9-19mdk/net/ne2k-pci.o: unresolved symbol
unregister_netdev_R19c80e01

Do I have to total recompile the kernel or is there some step that I am
missing. The driver compiles without errors or warnings and I had hoped
I could just swap the new and old driver.
I am running mandrake 6.0 on a 486 100Mhz pentium.

Thanks for any suggestions. PJ

Subject: General Network Question
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 16:15:06 -0400

I know that this is a general networking question and not linux specific
but I am trying to network linux boxes. :)

I recently got a 3Com Corebuilder 3500 layer 3 switch/router and have a
few questions. First of all I am trying to break up a corp network into
4 subnets and am using the following addressing scheme.

subnet 1: 10.0.0.0/24
subnet 2: 10.0.1.0/24
subnet 3: 10.0.2.0/24
subnet 4: 10.0.3.0/24

Each of the subnets is going to occupy a single router port. I setup a
VLAN (I'm new to VLANs and don't fully understand them) for each subnet
and assigned ip addresses to each router interface in the following
manner:

router port 1: 10.0.0.254/24 - subnet 1
router port 2: 10.0.1.254/24 - subnet 2
router port 3: 10.0.2.254/24 - subnet 3
router port 4: 10.0.3.254/24 - subnet 4

This is where I get confused. For testing purposes I connected a PC
directly to a given router port and assign it an address in that
network, for example:

PC1: 10.0.0.2/24 ::CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO:: router port 1: 10.0.0.254/24
PC2: 10.0.1.2/24 ::CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO:: router port 2: 10.0.1.254/24

I am unable to ping any router ports or PC1 from PC2.

Question 1: Does this setup make sense?

Question 2: I plan on just doing static routing since this is an
internal network with only 1 router, do I need any static routes? I'm
guesing no since I am not forwarding any packets to any other routers.

Questions 3: Why are VLANs necessary? What is their purpose?

Sorry for the long winded explanation but I wanted to be explicit and
thanks for any help.

I thought the command should be:

        ipfwadm -F -a m -S <network_B> -D 0.0.0.0/0

Does it matter whether you use 'm' or 'masq'?

A few questions:

What OS are you using on both machines? Which one works?

Do you have the same netmask on both machines? (ifconfig - linux)
(ipconfig - win)

Can you ping between your machines?

Is your network completely functional between both machines?

Can you ping to an IP at your ISP? On the internet?

Do you have a nameserver entered? Same as the one that works?

Can you ping to a hostname at your ISP? On the internet?

Do you have a default gateway setup? Same as the one that works?

What do you get when you execute 'route'? (route - linux) ('route print' -
win)

Phil

Okay, after spending 3 hours with the tecnical support people today, I
managed to get a great deal of the problems with my network straightened
out. Just to recap, I have a cable modem account and ordered another IP
address so as to network 2 computers together.

I am using a SOHOware 10/100 autosensinv 5-port hub. It has ports numbered
1-5, as well as an uplink port to which the modem is connected. The

Subject: SMC EtherPower II (epic100 drivers), PnP, & reboots
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 18:59:45 GMT

Well I think I finally figured out why I couldn't get Linux networking to
work properly. I did about 20 re-installs thinking it was me, but as it turns
out it's thanks to MicroSquash (more about that at the end). Basically, I do
an install and sometimes the ethernet card would get initialized and sometimes
it wouldn't. I got pissed once and unplugged it (where I contemplated for a
second throwning the machine at the wall ;) and lo a behold it worked. But,
after rebooting into windows and then back into linux it didn't work anymore.
So I went hunting for the bootlog messages and sure enough I was getting an
error. So I went looking for information on the driver that I had installed
(one of the things it does during the driver install is print who wrote it and
where to get more info). After tracking the guy down I found a bunch of
information (http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/epic100.html). There are
new drivers out, but I haven't yet figured out how to make those work (I gotta
compile it, and then blah blah blah- since I'm new to all this I don't know how
to ;).

Has anybody got a later version of the epic100 than 1.0.4 compiled for the
2.2.5-15 kernel????

Is there some other way to solve this without comiling new drivers or turning
off the machine?

thanks

The man page says -m but I don't think it matters. According to
ipfwadm -F -l it says it should accept and masquerade packets for
network "B" but when I do a ipfwadm -M -l it never shows any active
masquerades for network "B". I'm stumped.

I have a Slack 3.6 box with 2.2.10-ac12, and I am having a problem

I get a 'password incorrect' message. It would seem to me that once
this ftp problem is solved, my ssh problem will go away.

Subject: problem with wu-ftpd
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 20:00:00 GMT

I am running RH6.0 and using wu-ftpd. I was trying to run the server in
a chroot environment using the -r flag, with another stand alone server
on a higher port (3000). I was having problems getting both severs to
run correctly, and since this is now a production machine didn't have
time to keep that configuration and play with it. When I switched back
to the standard configuration for ftpd I find that users can login, but
cannot get a directory listing. Users can also cd around the directory
tree, but can't upload files. I am thinking that this is a problem with
my shared libs, I had to make copies of a few of them to get the server
running in the chroot environment. While I was moving them around I may
have misplaced one or more. Does anyone have a list of libs that wu
requires? Also any suggestions as to other causes to the problem would
be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I was in exactly the same situation last week, and when I saw your
post here, I decided to wait and see if anyone answered you post.
Since noone answered it by Sunday, I went off to try and fix the
issue myself. I was able to figure out that the reason I could not
select the network base configuration item in the system
administration menu in yast was due to the fact that DHCP was enabled.
When DHCP is enabled, it is not possible to specify the network
configuration parameters. The method I used to disable DHCP was to
edit the rc.config file in the /etc/ directory, find the DHCLIENT
variable, and change the value to "no". I am sure that there is an
easier way to disable DHCP (probably within yast itself), but I know
my way works. Once DHCP is disabled, you will be able to select the
network base configuration in yast. Hope this helps.

now, the PATH is ok: /bin
the login program is working all right too, i have tested it several times
the permissions in /bin/login are ok too.
i also tried telling telnet where login lives wit the "-D /bin/login"

i called redhat support and they told me that this problem is "beyond their

You can attach as many A records to an IP address as you want. You may only
have one PTR record for any given address, however. Not a problem for most
applications, specifically yours. For example:

$ORIGIN domain1.net.
@ IN SOA @ root (
                                        42 ; serial (d. adams)

I am curious if there exists a Microsoft Exchange
server "clone" for a Linux server so that one
could use Outlook on windows machines but Linux on
a server and have the "collaboration" that one
would have with a standard Outlook and Exchange
server setup?

Subject: Does linux support this internal modem
Date: 17 Aug 1999 16:58:06 -0400

Hi, I have a Dell Dimension XPS T450 system which has an internal
modem-U.S.Robotics 56K V90 voice Win. I think it's a PCI modem.
Is this those "windows-only" modem? If not ( I certainly hope not ),
does linux support it?

If I cannot use it under linux, I plan to buy a new external modem.
please give me some recommendations. Would an added external modem
conflict with my old one in any way? My computer has both Windows 98
second edition and Red hat linux 6.0 on it.

If you can help me, please send me an email at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks a lot,

Xiaohu

Yes. You need to install Samba and configure it. Samba essentially
speaks NT networking over TCP/IP. It also comes with most Linux
distributions.

Read the Linux IP-Masq howto. This should put you on the right track.

If you've got a ppp connection and a LAN, you've got everything you need.

Look in /etc/services. You should find that ports 137 thru 139 need to be
enable through the firewall for both TCP and UDP.
